Mafia II is a game about the Mafia.

The goal of Mafia II is to collect vintage Playboy centerfolds.

mafia-ii-20090114033305327_640w.jpg
It's an open-world game that takes place in the late 40s and early 50s in Empire Bay, a city that blends elements of New York, Boston and Chicago.

mafia-ii-20090819000203760_640w.jpg

You play the role of Vito. Not only is he a suave motherfucker, he's also a war hero. He's just come back from serving in WWII, and finds that times are rough in Empire Bay, and about to get a whole lot rougher.

mafia-ii-20080411115105030_640w.jpg

Fortunately Vito has some good friends, although like him they're on the wrong side of the law.

mafia-ii-20090120043622835_640w.jpg

Joe is a wiseguy, and knows how to have a good time. He's a shoot first, ask questions later kinda guy.

mafia-ii-20100615040855425_640w.jpg

Hnenry is a made man with the Clemente family. He's Vito and Joe's first connection to the criminal underworld.

If you haven't already played the demo, you can grab it on STEAM, or on Xbox Live or the Playstation Network.

The game launches tomorrow (August 24th), so you can start preloading it on Steam right now!

There is indeed some Tommy Gun action in this game.

The NPC dialogue in the demo is spectacular... and you can push fisherman into the bay!

I love how this game has the Shenmue (old Sega Dreamcast game) element I (and hopefully many others) have been waiting for, where the environment is amazing, and the melee combat has awesome cutscenes set up by button combinations, all set in a sandbox.

I was shocked and very surprised at how my computer ran the demo. The graphics look gorgeous but I don't know if this is as high as my computer will go.

I do know that I am the worst driver and I am so embarrassed. I just wanted to get to the job I didn't mean to run over that poor woman! D:

    Oh, there's a demo? Awesome.

Does the game's story stand well on its own or is it a direct continuation? I never played the first Mafia 'cause I don't play PC and I always heard the console ports were pretty awful.

    it's a mafia game

if there aren't tommy guns you need to calmly eject the disc, place it carefully back in its box, slowly walk out of your house, drive to the game store with a stoic demeanor, leisurely walk into said establishment and then set everyone and everything inside it on fire

    The demo's pretty fun

They're landing on the wrong side of the whole realism vs. fun thing though in a few areas

There's a reason head-on collisions don't kill you in most open-world games that involve a lot of driving!

Also every open-world game that isn't GTA makes all the cops wanna kill you just for having your weapon out. It's more convenient that way!

Also, I like how most of the police responses in the game are realisticish. In the demo I started punching a random dude who fought back. As we were fighting, a squad car pulls over and you hear the cop bark into the radio "We got two idiots brawlin' in the streets, gonna break it up!"

Cop runs between us, pushes us apart. I stopped attacking, as did my victim. Cop basically chastised us a bit, then walked away. Neato.

The first game really immersed you in the world of the rather poorly named "Lost Heaven" (which was mainly modeled off Chicago/New York). I loved it. I can see, even now, how it wouldn't exactly be everyone's cup of tea but it certainly merited applause in areas I haven't seen many game designers attempt (again). If I recall correctly, most (if not all) cars required you to use the clutch to shift gears (by pressing C or Z on the keyboard). Not exactly the most inventive of creations but it certainly added to the atmosphere. The story was well written and well-rounded (simple in most cases but it was executed well).

I don't really get why anyone would want multiplayer in this kind of game - it's not really "that" kind of game (nor was the first Mafia).

    Yeah, I agree. I wasn't being sarcastic.

It's getting annoying to see so many games have multiplayer that no one's going to play get shoehorned in.

Everyone's going to revert to old standbys like Halo, CoD, L4D...I don't see why most developers bother. So it actually makes me kinda happy to see a team focus solely on delivering a great single-player experience instead.

I wasn't sure if getting drunk affected my driving, but it certainly affected my vision and balance. I like how the police don't immediately start shooting at you if you get into a fender bender, but will write you a ticket which you can bribe your way out of.

Theres something about this game that i really like. Its technically kinda shabby and the overworld is awful, but the gunfights, the interior details and how close the camera is to the character are really immersive. God damn the gun sounds and firefights are brilliant. Its technically awful, but its one of those things that you either respond to or you dont based on kind of superficialities.

I played the first one a while back and loved it, but goddam some of the driving sections annoyed the hell out of me though, the part where you have to win the race was particularly awful until I stumbled on a glitch.

Hopefully a few years of development and playing with a controller this time should make it more enjoyable.
