*Updated* (Currently Released - iConvention) New Unofficial PAX App for iPhone

edited September 2010 in PAX Archive
**UPDATE**
App is currently in the app store!! Check it out! iConvention - Support a local seattle app developer =)

Here is the iTunes link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iconvention/id389310230?mt=8

Also there is a twitter contest to get a free copy of the app! The idea is to expose as many pax goers to the apps existence as possible =) Use the #iConvention hash tag and if you are one of the first 30 people to do it - I will contact you personally and give you a free code!! =D

Hi!

My friend has convinced me to make an iPhone/iPod Touch app to assist with your PAX Experience. So I went ahead and made this convention-tracker app (its details are listed below) which is technically going to be useable for any of the major cons (not just PAX). If you are interested or would like to see an update in the near future just let me know and I will try my best to add them in. I submitted it to the app store last night so it should be available 1 or 2 days before PAX.

Feature List
1. Select from a list of common conventions which one you are currently "attending"
2. Once selected, the app will download the entire package file (map, events (+locations/times), and twitter feeds) for offline viewing.
3. Browse all of the events
3. Select events you wish to attend
4. View all of the events you have scheduled.
5. Look at the convention map (offline, for your convenience!)
6. View the top 20 twitter news comments.

Here are some screenshots, the app is named iConvention.

I know something like this exists for android: thought I would bring the love to iPhone! =)

    I know expojunkie made one last year. I found it amazingly helpful. You basically went to a certain website, and it downloaded for you. It wasn't through the appstore at all, if i remember correctly. In fact, I still have it on my phone. Might want to look into that.

    Awesome work! Not to rain on anyone's parade, but expojunkie is working on another app for Prime. They have put them out for the last 3 PAX's that I'm aware of.

    Oh haha, thats cool. A bit unfortunate that I now have competition xP. Thanks for showing me though - I had no idea there were any PAX helper apps like that available for iPhone.

    Yeah I just submitted it last night. Should be available 1 day before PAX. (cutting it close, I know!)

    @ElmoFuntz
    I have it setup to show the "Expo Hall Map". The only issue is that it shows in portrait mode which is harder to navigate. I didn't have enough time to fix the orientation issue =(

    Sorry mate, the app is not available for iPad. I tried out my current version on the iPad using the emulator and it looked terrible Dx. If iConvention does moderately well I shall definitely be porting it over though!

    Is this a free app? if so, can you just post the .IPA on the internets so us jailbreakers can get in on it in case the Apple review team is slow to approve your app and don't get it out in time for PAX? /runonsentance

    That would be so winning :)

    The format of this looks really great! I love that you can peruse the event schedule and then select only certain items to appear in your personal schedule (if I'm interpreting that right). Thanks, I look forward to using it!

    You should download the app "good reader" which is an amazing .PDF reader, then you can just download the exhibit hall map, and the 2 schedules. It's not as slick as having a dedicated app, but it will amazingly handy.

    @Endlessninjafury (And everyone)
    The app is unfortunately 99 cents (many sadfaces). The reason I am charging for it is because if this proves successful - the app will be usable for more than just pax. Any major convention. And that will take a lot of continuous time and effort on my part so please forgive me Dx

    If people are displeased with this deal I may try to see about giving some of you nice folks a free copy! Let me think about how I can do this non-judgmentally haha.

    @ninja-hq
    Thank you kindly! And yes, you are exactly right - peruse the list, add to schedule, and view your personal schedule separately. =)

    @artrulz
    no problem!

    meh, 99 cents isn't too bad... I don't think I'd pay more though. If it's out by PAX I'll proally check it out. Based off of what I've read here it seems helpful... I hope...

    Yessss, I was just trying to cram the event PDF on here plus figure out all my schedule bullshit and stuff that in the calendar and getting really sad at how difficult it all is.

    99c is more than fine for this, I'm down.

    Speaking as a marketer here -- I wonder if you all would put up with some of those slim banner ads in exchange for the app being free? Because I would totally pay to promote Intel's stuff here. Bit late to do this year, but certainly next time.

    @teenprogrammer, There is a way around getting approval from Apple. AttackoftheShow just posted this video on youtube on how to use Open App Market to get new apps without getting Apple's approval. Awesome? Helpful? Let us know if you can put the iConvention app on there.

    I'm next to positive that uses HTML5 and Javascript for the apps, and that they REQUIRE a network connection. For something like PAX (or Comicon, Sakura con, etc) you really want guaranteed offline access.

    Not to mention those of us with a limited data plan (200MB, say) or none at all (iPod Touch) that would greatly prefer little to no network traffic.

    hey thanks frankea!! That is an awesome idea =)

    The only problem is that my app is largely meant to be for offline-use and if I go through that OpenAppMrkt the potentially destroyed bandwidth at PAX may not allow my app to run at optimum perf. But I will look into doing that anyway as a backup strategy.

    Thanks for the link =)

    @Decius
    Yeah it is really unfortunate and I am sorry I couldn't get this out before then. I started making it just a few days because the "event horizon" deadline. Since it takes 7 days to approve an app through the app store there really is no way I can speed this up. The file size is not that large so hopefully you will be able to download it in time Dx.

    @mentok1982
    I will change the title once the app is approved =)

    @millislim
    Yeah the app won't be released until thursday.

    @zilpep
    It turns out that solution won't work because the app must be used offline.
