I am A-OK with Dragon Quest being the series that never changes at all, and Final Fantasy being the series that mixes it up.
I also still don't quite get the complaint that S-E somehow needs to "return to form". They... already have? Over the past little while we've gotten Dragon Quest XI, Octopath Traveller, and Final Fantasy XV. Kingdom Hearts looks like it's out of the development quagmire and coming out soon. And on the non SE front, you've got the likes of Xenoblade 2 and Persona 5. And I also really wanna mention Valkyria Chronicles 4, even though you could probably have a mini debate on where that stands in the genre.
You are not spoiled for choice when you want an "Arr Pee Gee". So I don't really understand going on as if we're still in the dark ages here.
There's definitely some good stuff out there right now.
I do wish the traditional yet modern JRPG wasn't so hard to come by these days though. 1 big one this year and 1 last year isn't exactly booming. But hopefully their success can pave the way for a few more.
Octopath Traveler was actually the top-selling game in the U.S. in July.
It'll be nuts if that can be followed up with DQ11 on top in September.
(It won't, it'll be Spider-Man. And there's strong competition in September with NBA, FIFA, Tomb Raider and maybe Destiny 2. Still, it'll be interesting to see the reactions of DQ11 manages to be a strong seller regardless.)

While they don't have the budget of a Dragon Quest or a Persona, some other games to look into if you haven't already include Idea Factory's Neptunia series and Koei Tecmo's Atelier series. Both of those skew closer to the traditional style of JRPG you're talking about, while not going full retro like an Indy game.

This Erik guy just threw me for a loop. First time he spoke, I swear it was a british accent. A few sentences later, and it vanished into generic american. A few sentences after that, and now it's morphed into a sort of light New York/Jersey accent.

I got to Heliodor last night, this game is so good guys.
The default battle camera/control mode (free form) is better than I expected. I thought I was going to hate it, but the traditional mode tries to be too clever with constant camera cuts that I find jarring.
And the map shows you where all the sparkle spot are! And once you find a particular item from a sparkle, it shows you all the other spots that have it!

I love the animation for picking up and smashing pots and little barrels. Silent protagonist is all like "Fuck dis pot! And that pot! 'Imma smash all you's pots! Because fuck you I'm the Luminary!"
You can go into so many people's houses, and they don't seem to care at all while you're doing this.

Them announcing that it will be on Switch and it not being on Switch right now is so horrible because I want to just bite the bullet and grab it for PC but I know in my heart of hearts that there is no way I am playing a long JRPG on my PC.
I love that the game finally shows how much XP you need to get to the next level in the character menu... but you can still have the priest tell you at length at the church. Tradition!

There's early indications that this game may be flopping its American PS4 launch, despite great reviews. As in some major retailers not even carrying it due to low pre-orders. We'll need some time to confirm though, but its the kind of thing that makes Square somewhat justified in being Square.

FFXV and Kingdom hearts are RPGs made in Japan. That does not make them JRPGs.
There's room to argue border cases like Xenoblade but I feel those two examples are pretty far out of the genre. And all three are quite removed from SE's original "form" on say the NES/SNES.

I am absolutely adoring this game so far. I love the blend of classic DQ low-numbers combat with the nice QoL touches like the tactics system and auto-saves. It feels just old school enough to scratch that itch 12-year-old-me had for JRPG's while not being completely disrespectful of my time. Some of the small touches are amazing. Like the way Erik does the moonwalk when he get's Sultry Danced, or the way the MQ does the Carlton in the same state.
Most of the voice acting is tolerable and the writing is cheeky enough to keep me smiling. The story is relatively tropey but I think that's what we've come to expect from DQ. It's part of the charm. There is enough meat there to keep me interested in what's happening in the world. And what a gorgeous world it is. The game looks incredible on the PS4 Pro on my 4K TV. I'm sure it looks even more incredible on PC but this is the type of game I want to play on my couch on a big screen, not in front of my PC.
I've played both Octopath and Ni No Kuni II this year but so far this game has me way more hooked. Really happy Squeenix took the time to hammer out a really solid western release.

What
I'm assuming they mean because they are more action RPGs.
But I don't see why we can't just call them Action JRPGs because that's what they are which still makes them part of the JRPG umbrella.
Also, does anyone know of anywhere that shows all the skills in English on the skill board? I wanna do some planning while I'm away from the game but all I have is google translated ones but for stats it can be really hard to tell what they are saying.
The rise of MMOs in the 00's and the CRPG renaissance of the 10's has definitely caused the JRPG subgenre to reevaluate some of its defining characteristics, to the point where you could argue that most RPGs made in Japan aren't really JRPGs anymore. Not just turn based combat, but also the more linear approach to map design and relationships between party members as a major focus of the narrative.
On the other hand, there used to be a time when only very narratively shallow stuff like Diablo was considered an ARPG, but now almost every RPG with a real time combat system is given that label. So there's definitely a fine line between subgenres, and it keeps getting finer as they keep bleeding into each other.

I just want to know where dual-wield is for the MQ. Is it the top-right question mark in the sword panel, that requires at a minimum Falcon Slash in sword mastery to uncover?

Neptunia...
Oh lordy please no.
Next to a piece of equipment? I believe that means it is gear that will change a characters appearance.
Some require multiple pieces to have the appearance change. It will say what pieces are required in the description of the item.

It begins.
. . . even more so than the one for quest acceptances.
That one's also too long, but at least if you say the quest complete line along with it, it doesn't feel as bad.
The new party member jingle is long enough for it the party member to do some animation, finish it and hold the pose, then do a second one.
