Fucking liquid metal slime motherfucking pieces of shit I hate them so much
liquid metal slime killing got a lot easier once my pc learned have a ball. does 3-5 damage every time. now I kill them every time unless they flee on the first time which is impossible to kill.
Oh nice, I will try this out.
Right now I am using 3 sword wielders with Metal Slash.
This is especially frustrating because often an entire round of Metal Slashes will just barely not do enough damage to kill the slime. Like I will do 6 or 7 damage and it still will not die, and then run the next turn. That is far more annoying than it running the first turn.

If you have any falcon blades (and aren't using them), those give you two hits with metal slash. Also, adding a fourth metal slash buys you a lot due to the combo bonus.
Yeah I haven't gotten far enough along to have a Falcon Blade yet. In fact I just got to the Bowhole in the story and decided to grind a little while I was here with my current party setup.
But yeah when I return to do some more serious grinding I WILL BE PREPARED!
Aside from me voicing my current frustration at the metal slimes, this game is fun as fuck
This is one of those games that makes me realize how far along the localization of JRPGs has come over the years. The dialogue makes me chuckle pretty frequently, and effectively pulls on the heart strings at times.
It's also one of those RPGs that somehow makes grinding and farming enjoyable.
So there was a strange box waiting for me when I got home from work today. No return address was on it and the address label was nondescript. Inside was a DQ9 cap.
Given the fit, I'm not sure it's meant for adults and given the mysterious origin I'm somewhat afraid that it's a brain slug in a clever disguise but hey, free slime cap.
Did you buy it from Best Buy? I saw a forum post claiming that the hats were a promotion for the first x BB Reward Club members who bought DQ IX.

Start working on giving 1 or 2 members axe/spear points and get the Hatchet Man/Thunder Thrust abilities. 50/50 chance for either a crit or a miss. It boils down to being the best way to kill them. And in the case of king and platinum slimes, the only way.

I paid for my copy from Best Buy 30 minutes after they opened the morning of release specifically for the cap.

I've killed several MKS via regular damage. Ok, maybe three. But it was enough to count that they have about 15hp.
Also: in lieu of Hatchet Man/Thunder Thrust you can take a gamble on Pressure Point (spear)/Assassin's Stab (knife)/Needle Shot (bow). It may help to have weapons that can randomly instant-kill as well (Pruning Knife and others in that family, Demon Spear).
The moral of the story? Spears = dead metal slimes. I've been crazy lucky enough to find two Metal Slime Spears. Those things are ridiculous for Slime hunting, and made last week's non-story quest a joke.
First: The MC is the only one who can learn Egg On.
Second: Disruptive Wave is pretty much the only thing that makes late and post game bosses challenging. I can roll them in 3-5 turns (depending on HP) if they don't use it.
I currently have 2 characters with hatchet man, one with metalrang and my main with metal slash. the problem isnt so much with killing the slime but with getting the characters to have a decent agility score so they can go before it. I have one meteorite bracer i move around abit that helps but i could use a few more of those bracers for lower level starting grinds. I'm trying to decide if i should drop my extra skill points into agility boosts or get omniaxe on everyone first so they all can get a chance to crit.
I also am running low on gold (around 100k in the bank). I have not found any grotto maps beyond the first one, and still have not unlocked luminary or armormentalist....could really use a few jewel slimes.
I'm connecting to QVC from my wireless router at home, to get people on my list so i can trade maps, do i just need to put it into search mode and keep it on for awhile?
Canvass for guests is wireless, not wi-fi. You won't get any unless you're physically near them. Outside of a store event, you're SOL, pretty much.
Which reminds me that I'm without DQ9 until late Sunday as my wife goes to Atlanta for AWA. She got 15-16 tags for me at Otakon; here's hoping this trip fills up my QR.

You get more grotto maps by beating the boss of that 1st one you've been given.
Any tips for finding Moai Minstrels? I'm having a tough time finding their location in any FAQs besides "water grottoes." Not sure what kind, level etc.
Also, I beat Excalipurr on lvl 78 grotto last night. It was an epic duel for 40-45 team. My Paladin was a true champ. When Forebearance wasn't disrupted he managed to block/evade about 6 demon slashes which made things much easier.
Hey, can I unlock Sage before the "end" of the game? I'd really like to use one in the final battle
You certainly can. The Sage quest is found on the first second floor room in the eastern wing of Gittingham palace. To unlock the Sage you have to defeat an enemy that is found in the very last dungeon, near the end of that dungeon.
I used the Sage for my final battle, and I'm glad I took the time to bring her up to lvl 38. It's a fun class.

Run your maps through the Grotto Calculator. You need to know the terrain type (they only appear in Water or Cave types) and starting rank of monsters, but even without that information you can still narrow it down.

Oh yeah. I totally agree. I quit playing jrpgs a while ago. I got sick of grinding. But DQ9 solves this problem nicely. Plus I think the string attack=damage bonus is brilliant. Even if your weak mage can only do one point of damage they lay the foundation for a serious damage multiplyer.
Can I just say how much I #$&#% HATE darkonium slimes? My team is 60ish at their highest, I'm trying to level up some other jobs and whatnot with a floor with all liquid metals. Sometimes they bring darkonium slimes, and I just die. Ugh! One I can deal with, when I see two I know it's a wipe.

Arrgh!
Yeah, Darkoniums can be a bitch until you've got a ton of stat increases under your belt.
Tip: they are crazy resistant to magic, to the point where using Fources makes you do no damage to them. They aren't immune to Disco Stew if you have it, though (LMS are, of course, but survival is more important at that point).
Finally got around to finding and exploring my lvl 99 Steel Void of Evil I picked up at PAX. I ran into my first King Metal Slime.
The utter thrill in landing my first successful Thunder Thrust on the big lug is hard to describe. The sound I uttered was something between a "whee" and a slightly-aroused "mmmm."
Quite the experience. I also managed to pick up some densinium and a saint's ashes from down there too, which was nice.

You know what the best part about hunting MKS is?
It doesn't get old.
Part of it is the visceral satisfaction of landing a critical hit, I think. The massive reward doesn't hurt either. I still remember the night I nailed a pair of Platinum King Jewels... I think each character gained 120K.
You know, I've read before that an addictive quality of games is hiding the results of an action. So in WoW, you kill enemies but you don't always know what loot you get for a kill, but when you do, it's like ringing a bell in your brain.
I see the same sort of thing with slime hunting : I HAVE to have a critical, but it's never guaranteed : sometimes I miss, sometimes I get the critical but the slime will dodge! Hell, I don't even know if the slimes will stick around long enough to land ANY hits. That sort of random outcome keeps me coming back for more. The encounter is guaranteed, but the outcome varies wildly each time.
I think that's also why grotto exploration is so fun.

Indeed, so you can have someone psyche up, the MC egg them on, someone else oomph them and have the fourth character buff/heal/fource the party.

Yes, the creature you need to kill is a common spawn in one of the rooms of the final "dungeon". Just be sure to bring a Mage or two.

MKS are the top. Darkonuim suck. "NO" xp, "NO" money. Just TPK.

Technically, Platinum King Jewels are the top. They're just not worth farming because of the other monsters that spawn with them.
That's because it's a hat, not a weapon. :P
