Chapter 3 is the best part of Chapters of the Chosen, following closely by chapter 4 due to the change up of the combat music. It's definitely my favorite DQ.

I loved Chapter 3 a great deal, but coming off of Chapter 2 which has an interesting story (and cliffhanger) and then having to change direction as Taloon/Torneko and it's significantly less focused on party combat along with the mandatory goal of making money, it can be a downer and stopping point for some players new to the game. Personally, I loved spending time as a shopkeeper in his chapter, but I can see how it's a bore for others. Definitely stick it out until Chapter 4 if you find that it's slow-paced.

I got to Torneko's chapter in DQ4 and I'm not really sure what's going on here. Customers keep coming in and offering to buy or sell things. I've been selling everything and buying nothing. I don't see any sort of inventory, so I'm assuming my shop follows the infinite product rule of most JRPGs?

What am I doing here? Am I waiting for an event to happen? Am I waiting for a specific customer to come in?

Also, a guy just came in offering to sell me a "cautery sword" for 2625 gold. I have no idea what this is or if I should buy it. If I buy it, it's gonna wipe out basically all of the money I've earned thus far, and maybe even put me in the hole. And since I don't know what my goal or objective is here, I don't know if this is something I should do or not.

Torneko's chapter is interesting. The shopkeeper mechanic is there for two reasons - an easy (if grindy) way to make money, and the second is Cautery-fucking-swords.

Based on my experience, your commission is moot mostly until you get customers wanting to buy your wares. The game keeps track of what's been sold to you in terms of the unique weapons not already part of your shop. So Divine Daggers, Crossbows and Cautery Swords. If you buy one from a customer, and sell one, it's gone from your shop list until someone else comes and sells you another.

You can say No when offering to buy a customer's good, and they may either say you're offering to buy it for less (which is good for your commission) or buy it for more (bad, but who cares, you can never make less than 100 gold at the end of the work day). When selling, same bit - say No and sell for less (bad for you) or more (good for your commission). Selling a Cautery Sword usually nets you an extra 150G to your commission, but if you're selling it early in your work day (meaning you haven't done a lot of customer business yet), you'll end your day early and only end up with 225G or so. You can earn up to 350G with a high sell Cautery Sword, but don't sell those just yet.

Buy one for yourself. It's Torneko's best weapon for the whole chapter. He'll never need for anything else until Chapter 5. Torneko's chapter is also the easiest one to make money because random enemies (including slimes) will drop random gear up to Steel Swords and Half Plates, which sell for 800-1200ish. Consider buying two if you like, because with the Bag, you can put a spare sword in there for use for other characters in later Chapters. This is especially useful for Chapter 5 when you finally play as your Hero and he'll start out really uber. Or if you consider that to be an exploit, don't.

It's been a really long time, but I think the gist of it is you run the shop, but there are also other ways to earn money, like the casino or enemies (that drop way more money that normal in this chapter). And that there are quests around town and the world that require a lot of money to complete, and that's how you advance the plot.

But I do remember one thing. Yes, you want that Cautery sword. Once you have an item, it's unlocked in a shop and you can buy it. This sword has the highest resell value, and is used for a very important "trick". You can't keep all the mass amount of funds Tomeko earns in the chapter, but you can keep the items. So before you're all done, you convert all your gold into Cautery swords, as many as you can hold. Then when you get to the final chapter, you get access to this cache, liquidate the lot of it, and live on easy street for a good long time.

That's if you want to do all that, mind you. Personally I find money grinding in DQ games to be the most fucking annoying thing ever. Gear is 5000+, and local enemies drop ~10 gold? Piss off.

Yup, the DS/mobile version of the game added the modern convenience of the Bag, which is an inventory godsend for games like Dragon Quest, but also because of the Chapter setup in this game, makes some Chapters start out easy. Ideally, save all those Nuts and Seeds for the Hero since he's always your party mainstay in Chapter 5, so just dump them in the Bag. In Torneko's chapter, you get a Full Plate Armor for free at one point. Bag it for the Hero. Buy a Cautery Sword, bag that, too.

The sisters in Chapter 4 also start out kind of weakish. You could give them a boost by the same means, too.

Have inventory limitations ever really added anything in Dragon Quest? Or heck, in pretty much any other rpg where the point of the inventory isn't to restrict how much loot you can haul back?

It's been a while, but I am about 99% sure that the bags are separate until the individual characters join up in Chapter 5.

There are a dozen archaic systems and design choices in Dragon Quest that are there seemingly because of "nostalgia" and "tradition". It's one of the things I will happily rag on the series.

To be slightly fair though, we are talking about DQIV, which was originally an NES game... though clearly there was nothing stopping them from updating shit for the DS version. And IX did tweak the inventory... somewhat. Equipment is now communal and doesn't take up individual inventory space. Everything else does though. Yaaaayyy.

In DQ3 at least it restricted how many usable items you could carry around for healing purposes, which made long dungeons more treacherous since you couldn't just carry 99 herbs and heal to full between every battle at a 0MP cost (and herbs are super cheap in DQ). And because equipment and items shared slots, this meant your mage-types (who couldn't carry shields, for instance) tended to have more inventory space for usable items. You could even choose between middling armor bonuses from something like an obsolete hat you can't replace yet and carrying additional valuable items.

I am actually pretty psyched for the game. I plan on trying to make a serious attempt to stream through the PS4, though I haven't done it before so not entirely sure what might be needed to get that going. :P

If it's just too much hassle, I'll just enjoy playing it on my own time. :P

Way back when I got my PS4 I spent some time streaming AC4: Black Flag. But nobody ever joined my Twitch stream to watch so I eventually just stopped. It sometimes caused frame drop issues since Twitch is running in the background. No idea if they have improved functionality of that in the last (nearly) two years.

Okay, you guys have probably seen this already, but I found this video of the alternate ending from the new DQ8 3ds remake. The really interesting part begins a little after the thirty minute mark. Sadly, it is entirely in Japanese. Let's hope for a western release (we can be foolish so long as it make us less depressed).

    So...
    You can marry Jessica instead?

Ok, but... why are you still interrupting that prince's wedding? Or better yet, why are you just up and hijacking it? So you stop Charmles and Medea getting married (which promptly gets completely ignored) and then... well fuck it, we got all this stuff here anyways, you two lovebirds wanna use it?

We really need a translation of that or something. Because that seems like one hell of a shoehorned scene at the end there.

Okay, from what I've heard that there are new scenes throughout the game where you can build up a relationship with Jessica by making the right choices. These plus getting the argon heart ring from the dragovian area allow you to unlock this ending (and I'm pretty sure that at least one of the game's creators is calling this the "True" ending.)

And we're interrupting Charmles wedding because he's an ass-hole who is marrying your childhood friend against her will. Why would we NOT be interrupting the wedding? The guy was such as ass that they named a whole trope after him! (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PrinceCharmless)

Dragon Quest Heroes is really really fun.

Such a pleasant change from coming from Hyrule Warriors where bosses had "weak spot" meters I had to wait and wait to use a thing and expose then quickly destroy to do any kind of damage.

I've been having a blast with it. These classic Dragon Quest monster designs look so good in HD.

My favorite part is that you can go back to any previous battlefield and plop yourself down and the game is like "Hey, here's infinite waves of monsters, fight for as long as you want."

So you can grind out materials, gold, or experience. You can also unlock varying difficulty levels of each area so you don't always have to say fight level 1 stuff if you go back to the first battlefield.

If you liked Hyrule Warriors you'll probably like this.

You don't have an army with you though, so not massive amount of allied troops just your party of four characters of your choosing that you can switch between during battle.

When you kill and enemy it might turn into a coin, if you collect said coin then you can summon that enemy as an AI controlled ally that will fight and defend the area around where you summon then OR they'll come out and do one big attack immediately or give your party healing or buffs.

Also like Hyrule Warriors each character has attacks and passives that can be bought, but unlike Hyrule Warriors you don't have to seach battlefields for monster parts to buy them, you just use Skill Points that you get every time you level up to buy the skills you want.

You can refund your points at any time to rearrange them also.

I got my first taste of Hyrule Warriors yesterday when a friend brought it over to show me what I might get to expect from Dragon Quest Heroes.

I've barely played any other musou game before, and it honestly felt a bit like information overload. You'd go charging through areas, laying waste to mooks, and then little constant updates like "The West Square is under attack!" and all kinds of blinking things happening on the minimap. It took some getting used to, but I eventually came around to making sense of it. It seemed fun.

Dragon Quest Heroes looks like a more streamlined update on the musou genre, with characters I actually care about. Not that Link and Zelda don't have their obvious place in history and memory, but I'm so much more a DQ fan that it's absurd. I think a lot of THAT is going to keep me glued to my couch playing for a perfect file.
