My original plan, which is still the plan, is to get both the PS4 version and the 3DS version, since my understanding is that they are different games in terms of gameplay at least. I believe the story is the same, but they play significantly different from each other.

Nobody would miss it if it were just a port, but the 3DS version was developed as an entirely different style of game, which makes it more of a loss that we aren't getting it. They have the same story, but the 3DS version is modeled more like the 3DS DQ remakes while the PS4 version is a more modernized work on the series.

WOOOOOO!
English version getting voice acting. Has a confirmed date. Yep, this is the best god damn year in video games.

The article there says they aren't planning a 3DS version here at all.

Don't need to localize the 3DS version if you just play both side by side.
Appearantly there's a "Draconian Quest" (cute) level of difficulty in the game. I imagine lots of grinding, unfair grouping of mobs and insane RNG on RNG-based enemy attacks. It's refreshing to have a traditional RPG not afraid of it's roots.

This is nice mostly because reports are that DQXI was actually really easy compared to old ones with the exception of the post-game bosses. So it's good to know there's an option to fix that here.
I've never beaten even one of those games. DQ is a series that I own the crap out of, but suck at finishing. I purchased them and played them all sorts of out of order too.
DQ9 was actually my first experience with the series. I loved it. A whole bunch. I loved the class system, and being able to basically fully customize my entire party. I know a lot of people did not like that, because a team of generics means less characterization in the main party. But I didn't mind. It was my first game, and so everything about it was new. My first Slime encounters, my first Gold Golems, and Hammerheads, and everything else that makes the series unique. So a group of generic party members wasn't even remotely a big deal to me, being my first game.
I've since at least started all of them, with the exception of 5 and 6, which I've never even put in my game system, despite owning them.
... I really ought to beat one of them sometime. DQB is my game with the farthest progress, and I'm in the final chapter of that game, with 2 of the 3 teleportals open, so I'm pretty close to the end. I've just never finished it.

Not only is that a bullshit non-answer, but it's also an insult to the dev team who made the 3DS version by implying that it's not a good enough representation of the series to be worth bringing to the West.
sadness. I was looking forward to the 3ds or the Switch versions. Maybe I'll get the PC version but more than likely I'll just try and forget about it til the Switch version arrives.

This is a late reply because I just saw this thread, but I'm in a somewhat similar boat. I'll put my long, stupid tale in a spoiler:
I've had a complicated relationship with the series. Like a lot of people, I got my first exposure to it with Dragon Warrior on the NES. I played through it and enjoyed it, but felt it got overshadowed by what I saw as improvements in Final Fantasy when I bought that game. Then Dragon Warrior II came out. I remember it being a bit of a slog and taking forever before I even got my whole party together, but I did manage to beat the game.
And after that, I was done with the Dragon Warrior series for a while. I saw there was a third on coming out, but by the time that happened I already had an SNES and wasn't very interested in going back.
Years later, Dragon Warrior VII came out on the PS1. At that point, I had a PS2, but bought the game anyway since the PS2 had backward compatibility. I made it about 30 hours in before taking a lengthy break. Never got back to it.
I got Dragon Quest Swords or whatever it was for the Wii. It's still in shrinkwrap.
I got Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime for the DS. This game was amazing and I loved it. It was the third game in the Dragon Quest series that I ever managed to complete.
I got Dragon Quest VIII for PS2 a year or two after it came out. It never made it into the system, but I still own it.
In 2011, I picked up Dragon Quest IV, V, VI, and IX for the DS. I started playing Dragon Quest IV and enjoyed it, but stopped about 24 hours in. Fast forward to the Dragon Quest XI release announcement a few weeks ago: I thought to myself, "man, I really should play more of these games." I dug out my DSi and Dragon Quest IV and picked up where I left off. I was a little confused about where I had to go and what I had to do, but it was relatively easy once I skimmed a FAQ. I put another 15-20 hours into the game and got the true ending, making DQ IV the fourth game in the series I've completed!
Anyway, I still want to play through more of them, but my plan is to play the rest in chronological order. The next one I'm planning on playing is the translated Super Famicom version of DQ III. Not sure how long that'll take me. I have a feeling it'll be years before I get to Dragon Quest XI!
DQIII on Gameboy Color was my first and still remains one of my favourite experiences. IV was good, V was amazing. VII was a slog and that was the 3DS (good) version. Probably worth it, overall. Still haven't played VIII but it's in my 3DS, waiting. I'd like to some day. Never played I or II. Or X. Don't do MMOs. XI looks good. Switch or PC?
You'll die with unfinished business, anyway. Don't worry about it.
This just reminds me of the tragic story of Edith Jeter.
A member of the retro-gaming site Racket Boy did some research to find that fifteen years ago, a 76-year-old woman was clamoring for the release of Dragon Quest VI in the states. Edith Jeter's wrote a letter to Nintendo Power stating-
“I’m now 76 years old. I may not live long enough to see Dragon Quest VI unless someone takes action soon.”
This was right when Enix was closing its doors, before the merger with Square Enix, so most of the company's games were unable to be localized at the time. Now Dragon Quest VI is finally coming to the United States on February 14th, but sadly, Edith Jeter is no longer here to play it. She passed away on earlier this [January] at the age of 91.

I enjoyed the story and levels of 7. But that insufferable nag killed it for me. I forget her name. She's one of the worst party members I have ever experienced in any video game ever.

If you haven't finished it yet, just know that you eventually do get the option to bench her back at the starting town for the remainder of the game once your 5th party member joins.

Maybe its the Stockholm talking but by the end of the game I found Maribel's abrasiveness somehow... Endearing? Like, we might be in a nightmare scenario and everyone's dying but Maribel is still bitching about something petty, so we'll probably be alright.

I skimmed a FAQ for Dragon Warrior VII on the PS1 and found where I had stopped: a place called Penal Town. I might even have that old save file somewhere, but I'll probably end up starting over from the beginning whenever I finally get to it. But that's 3 games away!
(I know the 3DS version improves upon the game, but I don't have a 3DS at the moment)
DQ11 looks neat, but I want to know more about DQB2. I was sad that it didn't even get a mention at E3. Hopefully they're saving news for Tokyo Game Show this year. I think that happens in August? Or September? It's sometime in the fall.

Just feel like dropping by to say DQ11 looks like such an amazing game. My excitement for it is palpable.
It looks to rival Persona 5 as the best JRPG I've ever played. Here's hoping!
Does a surprisingly good job of emulating the old DQ feel in a lot of aspects, reminds me a lot of the Gameboy Color remakes I played as a kid. Game is long as hell and you can tell it was made by someone who lives, breathes and eats Dragon Quest.
I honestly do not understand Square Enix's reservations with localizing and sending DQ games west. Has there ever been a DQ game that under-performed outside of Japan, relative to the amount of investment they put in?
When you factor in Localization, Distribution, and Marketing, a game needs to at minimum make back what was put into it to be successful. And for some reason, despite how bonkers huge DQ is in Japan, they never put much into the Marketing or Distribution of those games outside of Japan. Why is that? What possible cause for concern does Square Enix have?
Honestly, these days, I would be more concerned with how their flagship property of Final Fantasy does. In the world. And yet they continue to sink tons of money and marketing into FFXV (as an example) and that game was terrible. They're coming out with a year 2 season pass for a game that nobody is even playing anymore. Like really, is there even demand for more content for 15? Does anyone still play that game?
And yet they won't even take the chance of localizing the DQ11 version for 3DS, even though DQ as a franchise does not carry any of the ill-will and negative fan responses that FF carries these days.

...unless you're holding out for the Switch version, in which case it's coming out "much later." Oh, and the 3DS version isn't coming over at all.

edit: Oh, it didn't so at least that makes more sense. Guess they are having performance issues with it.

That's my lifestory about mostly every series.
Life isn't about the destination. The real treasure is the money you spend along the way.
