To paraphrase Jimothy Sterling, publishers generally would rather make none of the money than some of they money, if they can't make all of the money. It doesn't matter if it's generally profitable - if they don't think it will be profitable to the extent they want it to be, they're not going to bother.
Honestly, these days, I would be more concerned with how their flagship property of Final Fantasy does. In the world. And yet they continue to sink tons of money and marketing into FFXV (as an example) and that game was terrible. They're coming out with a year 2 season pass for a game that nobody is even playing anymore.
FFXV was the number 4 best seller on Steam during the recent sale, so yes, people are still buying it and still playing it. It's a good game.

I feel like the PC version is probably going to have a pretty long trail, especially with the upcoming modding support. Kinda half-expecting an Elder Scrolls type situation, where in a decade people will be playing a significantly overhauled version of the game powered by like 300 mods.
If someone doesn't replace the meteor at the Disc of Cauthess with Cocoon, complete with a quest to enter it and recruit the cast of Final Fantasy XIII, I'll be very surprised. I will not be surprised if that mod conflicts with the Mario Kart mod which adds bananas and shells to the Regalia experience.
I liked Maribel from the start. She's a relatively benign dumb kid up to mundane mischief. Arrogant and down-to-earth evens out His Backwater-Royal Brotherly Recklessness.
I wonder how much DQ3 could be modernised before "charming old game" becomes "basic new game without much going on".

I really need to get back to DQ3. I was playing through a translated version of the Super Famicom game and put a lot of hours into it a few months ago, but for whatever reason (and maybe this was intentional) it always felt more challenging than it was supposed to be. I suspect I just had a bad party makeup. I was lazy and went with the default characters instead of recruiting my own.
It's been about 2 months. I'll probably just start over.
I impulse bought DQIX with five minutes left in that sale, only to realize that it has the same release date as Destiny 2: Forsaken.
Oh no. These are both "play to the exclusion of other games" type releases. Why would they do this?
I guess as a S-E game, it'll be a while before the game goes cheaper than that, anyway.
Welcome to the entire season of Fall for me.
Just an endless list of games that I want to put my full focus into and do everything possible with while 3 more games come out and then when moving on to the next in that list 3 more come out etc etc.
It's an amazing time for gaming but come on... why not spread it out!?!?!
After all this time I'm still not super keen on the design of the main character. He's just super plain looking. I wonder if they specifically asked Akira Toriyama to tone it down for him?

All preference really.
He's my favorite DQ MC ever appearance wise. Love the outfit, it feels just real enough to make sense for an adventuring swordsman in the setting. Love the colors, purple is my favorite color. And the hair gives me a Trunks vibe and he was always my favorite DBZ character so bonus nostalgia points there.
Edit: Speaking to the colors I just noticed I'm wearing a purple and grey outfit right now. Pretty much the best combo of colors for attire imo.
It's a very baby-faced Trunks, now that you mention it. I didn't think Toriyama had it in him to make a non-Goku hairstyled main hero, but Trunks is about as close to a secondary main hero as they come (before going Super Saiyan).
Toriyama has like half a dozen hair/face/body designs at most. They could likely just feed them into some mix-and-match modeling software and we'd never notice that he hadn't directly worked on a project.

Yeah. He's great at monsters, but pretty terrible at coming up with new human designs.
Maybe on the sad day in the future when Toriyama passes, that's what they will do so that they can continue to use his one-of-a-kind art style. They'll take all the art he's ever produced, put it into a randomizer, and be able to spit out new character designs for years to come.
It's the newest core Dragon Quest game in the last 9 years. Not counting spin-offs, which are in their own unique territory, "too traditional" doesn't really make sense.
Even other jRPGs not named Final Fantasy try to re-invent the wheel with randomly named systems and mechanics.
I know I'm not alone when I look forward to that comfortable, familiar gameplay that a DQ game brings, and it's a perfect game for new young gamers to know the "meat and potatoes" of RPGs before they go try some crazy shit, like a Conception or Ar Tornelico game.

Yea it always seems a little weird to me too. Like is the suggestion that it would be better for that particular experience to just not exist any more? Like not very many big budget traditional JRPGs are released. It's not like it's something we get to experience often at all. So when one comes out it's actually incredibly fresh in some ways despite sticking to its core traditions.
The ease of Dragon Quest games is what I personally enjoy about them. XI shouldn't have much of a tutorial, except maybe to explain the Tension system.
Meanwhile, I was still getting tutorials in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 at Chapter 4. I still don't think I understand how to trigger the elemental attacks very well, and something about orbs?
My seemingly eternal "complaint" with the series stems from them being too "traditional" for its own good, to the point of being archaic. Outright archaic stuff like save points still being restricted to churches, requiring you to skip paragraphs of text before finally getting to actually save. Having the "To next level" information also be restricted to dialog at the church and never putting that in the status screen where it belongs. It took them until VIII to finally put in a simple UI for the equipment screen, and even that was an NA addition. IX still has the individual item system for each character, and I think XI does as well.
I'm all for tradition. But some serious quality of life advancements have been made over the decades. There's camping in the woods, cooking by campfire and throwing away all your electronic devices. And then there's being expected to use leaves instead of toilet paper to wipe yourself. A bit of a hyperbolic statement, but DQ still feels like it dips into the latter at times.

Yep. My 2 most anticipated games in the same week.
Why..
Dragon Quest I-VIII have had mobile releases. It’s only a matter of time before XI joins them.
This is a little different because the 3DS version for XI was a sort of unique version of the game with different visual options and stuff.
And they don't seem to have intentions of bringing it here.
I would never have played that version personally, but I do feel bad for the folks that were looking for that version specifically.
But it's out in 11 DAYS!!!!!
So here is this from gamescom so the thread can be bumped and people don't sleep on this!

Toriyama re-uses hair styles the same way he re-uses faces.
But as Trunks was my favorite, that's what I will always associate it with first.

Start with Bald (Krillin), and just add different hair styles. You got Young Gohan, Bulma, Trunks, Goku, Raditz, Young Chi-Chi, Ayla...

Sitting at a strong 90 right now.
The few complaints are almost all about it being too traditional.
Which given that is the point of DQ, is not much to worry about at all!
Woooo!
