The ease of Dragon Quest games is what I personally enjoy about them. XI shouldn't have much of a tutorial, except maybe to explain the Tension system.
Meanwhile, I was still getting tutorials in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 at Chapter 4. I still don't think I understand how to trigger the elemental attacks very well, and something about orbs?
Oh is the tension system back?

Tension, and a different means of using skillpoints, which if I'm not mistaken, looks more like the layout they used for Dragon Quest Heroes rather than the 1-100 system of DQVIII.

Given that it wasn't until the 3DS port where they even let you know how close you were to another skill when you points into them, that's probably for the better.

My seemingly eternal "complaint" with the series stems from them being too "traditional" for its own good, to the point of being archaic. Outright archaic stuff like save points still being restricted to churches, requiring you to skip paragraphs of text before finally getting to actually save. Having the "To next level" information also be restricted to dialog at the church and never putting that in the status screen where it belongs. It took them until VIII to finally put in a simple UI for the equipment screen, and even that was an NA addition. IX still has the individual item system for each character, and I think XI does as well.
I'm all for tradition. But some serious quality of life advancements have been made over the decades. There's camping in the woods, cooking by campfire and throwing away all your electronic devices. And then there's being expected to use leaves instead of toilet paper to wipe yourself. A bit of a hyperbolic statement, but DQ still feels like it dips into the latter at times.
I agree. I was playing DQIII a few months back (still intend to get back to it) and the save system was even worse in that you could only go to a king to save the game. Churches were just for curing poison/removing curses/etc.

Mobile port actually, most of the OoL improvements in the 3DS version actually originated from there. The PS2 one actually did have an incredibly inconvenient way to check how close you were to another skill: there was just one woman in just one town that told how many points were needed for the next skill, and I think she only did it for the leader of the party, forcing you to go into the menu and rearrange the party to check anyone else.

I had no idea this existed until I read a review. I am so psyched. I mean - I have no time at ALL to play this to the level I want to...but perhaps one day.
Edit: Wait, what...3ds?! OK! Donezo. Take my money.

They have a bit of a thing with trying to have every system that's available to the player theoretically available to everyone else in the universe.
It's fucking odd that menu-jpgs are given the international copyright-treatment in DQ-games. I mean the actual reason is the same nostalgia as everything else, but it's a weird comparison side-by-side.
Wasn't some of the footage in japanese with that paper-design, early on?

So happy that we get a "Harder Monsters" mode!
That was like the one issue people had with the JPN version. And we get that at least somewhat fixed!
The Kotaku review claims this is the best DQ and one of the best games they’ve ever played
So hype
Also, myself and my good friend Erik are both DQ fans that have been hyping each other over this since announcement. A few months ago they revealed that one of your party members is a thief named Erik, and today I read that you get a mage named Veronica, so that’s pretty good. Both feeling represented
Also we’re nearly at 100 pages! This horribly dated thread can go!
In the interest of remaining blind on some details, I'm sure the alchemy system will be back, but I wonder if it'll be more like DQHeroes for monster drops and item spawn points in the maps.

Anyone else a weirdo who already has their team picked out?
Not me, because I have intentionally stayed as blind as I can to the marketing of this game. I've obviously seen pictures of the MC and probably a few party members, but I don't know any of their names, and to be honest I don't even know for sure who the party members are. For all I know none of them are. Maybe they're all friendly looking villains. I don't know!
And anyway, I'll probably just pick all the girls for my party and play a harem fantasy. Because that's how you play Dragon Quest, right?
The old man in the party, who I can only assume must be the "merchant class" of the team, looks too much like the merchants the game uses by default. Well, the old man merchant model, as opposed to the weird cow-gimp masked goon-merchants who say "'ello bruv. I gots sumfink I reckon you might fancy."
Why didn't they just go with a more unique merchant model like Torneko?

This fall is crowded enough as is. Guess I'll just wait for the switch version.

The old man actually gives me a Grandpa Gohan vibe whenever I see him in trailers - but I must admit that I don't have a clear recollection of what the old-man merchant type looks like having only played DQ 8 and 9.
DQXI is really really good but y’all probably could have guessed that by now or figured it out by yourself
There’s just enough nice little touches of modernity (autosave!) to get rid of all the annoyances of former DQs, but it still feels absolutely classic and timeless in design
I was wondering when something would finally pull me from Dead Cells
+1

Mine showed up early today, but I can't play it until I beat Octopath. I'm off work all week so I should be able to get to it in a couple days, I hope.

I started playing DQXI even though I haven't finished Ni No Kuni 2 or XBC2 yet. I am drowning in amazing JRPG'S and it is wonderful.
These "Draconian" options are interesting to. . .slightly ridiculous. I'll just go with the base experience to start but the no gold on items one seems REALLY interesting for a challenge playthrough.
In a world full of Final Fantasies I am so happy we got another Dragon Quest. Everything about the game so far exudes love for the traditional aspects of RPGs.

My PS4 almost bricked too, right after buying DQXI, but I managed to fix it. Phew! It's sooo good!

I'm curious how it compares to the PS4 Pro version. Certainly looks nice and crisp though on PC.

Performance wise I just got to the next town and holy slowdown Batman!
Yeah that's what I figured. Though FF has X/X-2, XIII, XIII-2, and XIII-3. And other companion games that relate to each other.
Haven't played literally any DQ game past DQ3 so I just wanted to make sure.
Thanks!
edit: I bought this this morning so I'm gonna go check it out now.
