PA Inspired

So I have just started drawing as a hobby almost a year now. I always wanted to do some comics just like PA and they influenced me very much so my drawings tend to be similar. I am in no way as good but I have significantly improved and I enjoy drawing very much now. Anyways since Ive been a fan for a while I thought I should finally start getting involved and putting some of my work up here. This one I did today as a reference towards starcraft 2. I was pressured by friends to get it and I never really played SC1 so I was a big time newb. Allow this comic to sum up my first 1v1 encounter. Enjoy 8)

I'll go ahead and comment on what I see there. I don't comment on humor, so I'll leave that to someone else. But as a rule of thumb, a full profile never works unless it serves a purpose, such as a person purposely moving in a particular direction.

This is going to be the mass majority of the faces' angles you're going to use for a 'talky' comic. You can also do it where the character is facing the camera, but only if they're turning away (which is fine) from something or purposely breaking the fourth wall.

    Other thoughts:
    1) Your lines could stand to be heavier [Edit: your lines are pretty clean actually.], but this will come with practice.
    2) (Removed: Oops, it's big enough, sorry. It was the photobucket thing)
    3) Try and adopt your own style. I'm sure you will without my help, but just keep that in mind.
    4) I never want to quash someone else's style, but square bubbles are typically used for narration, and that's how most people will read them. People's speech is almost always round with a pointer to the speaker in every comic of every kind in the world.

Draw every day, don't EVER give up!

    1. Yeah I am still learning this pressure sensitivity pen on my tablet.
    3. I have also practiced drawings while looking at Ben Caldwell, My earlier comics were really like PA, so I know they are well on their way to becoming my own, I figure I need to look at other artist and also try new things myself to complete it.
    4. Ive messed around with bubbles and I dont do very well when drawing them myself in the format you suggested. I think this is the first time I used squares. It just seemed easier but I agree with you entirely.

As for the profile view. I really use the side angle most of the time, again Im pretture sure this was the first time I strictly used profiles. I thought it was accurate to use it since we are watching a character so focused but overwhelmed by the craziness that is SC2 warfare. I could have changed the view that we were observing this character I suppose. Hmm Ill have to remember that.

Thank you so much for your critiques! 8)

This is a good example of a character doing pretty much what yours is, looking at a monitor. So it really works for just about anything.

I dunno about being PA inspired on the artwork side; I'm getting more of a Bevis and Butthead vibe. On the writing...now, I've never played Starcraft or any craft in any incarnation for that matter but even when these types of comics pop up on PA I still get something out of them. Even when touching on some niche topic (I know nothing Blizzard does can be considered niche, but...) Gabe and Tycho still provide some element of broad humor to placate the gaming masses even when the subject of a comic does not touch on a particular gamer's particular tastes.

The punchline with the head exploding feels slap-sticky and dialed in. Don't rely on random violence in a comic strip to replace a decent punchline.
