Playstation 2 data deleted on the PS 3?

I'm looking at my friend roll around in agony right now. He turns on his PS 3 and finds all his PS 2 data not there. He's blaming the laterst firmware update for this. What's up with this?

Its not me with a PS 3 problem, but my friend looks ripped apart at the moment. I want to help him out.... any solutions?

I doubt the data was deleted by the firmware update. My guess is that it's still on the hardrive but not being read. Contact Sony to see if it truly was the firmware and if there is a fix.

I have a friend online who had the same problem--he tried using one of those PS2-to-PS3 data convertors or whatever and the data ended up getting wiped. It shows up empty on his PS2, too.

This exact same thing happened to my roommate. This happened in... December, so I don't know if it was because of an update. He contacted Sony and was unable to recover any of his data. The only thing he lost was about 20 hours in FFXII, but still... I'm wary about transferring my saves over now.

Is this where I go "olol Sony!"?

Seriously though, that would suck if it happened to me. I don't have a lot of time consuming games, but the ones I do have are near 100% completion, so saying I would be pissed is a major understatement

He lost a good 30 hours on FFXII amongst other things. Like he was damn near 100 percent with it. To revert back to the saves he has on his PS 2 memory card... Man. I can't bear the thought myself. I'm watching him play his DS in the corner. Damn. Living the nightmare.

He might mean that he has played it for thirty hours since he copied his save game over to the PS3.

And I remember there was an OPM demo disk that also erased all of your save data. I forget which game did it.

    Yah this.

Are you a jerk? That's 30 hours of time lost. He bought the game at release, with the guide of course, because it's nice. He's been playing on and off since launch, building his progress slowly, because he doesn't have the time to marathon the game. But guide or no guide, there's effort placed in that game that has been lost. A guide doesn't beat the bosses for you. Those hunts and bosses are hard regardless. Funny part is, he hasn't even beaten the game yet. He wanted to do all the sidequests and collect everything before doing so. Also, the randomized treasures... he took the time to collect the best items, lucking out with the draw on quite a few of them.

And beside FFXII, he lost data for other games. That's a lot of time invested, lost with use of an official device. I feel bad for him. He's living a gamer's nightmare right now. We sent off an email to Sony and all, but he's kinda frozen when it comes to playing those games again.

it's a shame with the incredibly huge storage media (flash/hd's etc..) we have and how cheap it is that there isn't some sort of duplication for saved games.

I can understand losing your saves if the card/HD dies but to lose it because of some corrupt file/bad block/gremlin bit munchers is stupid.

I'd like to have the game I'm playing save to 2 places automatically so when I go to load it up and 1 save is screwed the backup is there to save me from smashing something.

I do this on the PC because I was in probably my best FO2 game ever and my drive screwed up, lost the partition (MFT?), 25 hours of game time, down the drain.
So now after everytime I finish playing something I copy the save to a second HD, just in case.

TLDR: Make duplicate saves automatic on consoles, it's not like we have no space.

That totally sucks though. I now have had this happen to me twice. The first time I lost about 30 hours in FFXII, and being stupid I tried to play that game on the PS3 again. Today I just hit the 90 hour mark and I turned the game off for class. When I came back both the virtual memory cards I was using were wiped. I had created a backup thinking that it would prevent something like this from happening again.

I spent like an hour on the phone with Sony complaining and finally got them to acknowledge there was a problem with the system that they were going to research. They wanted to try and send me an exchange unit, thinking my system was bad, but as I can see other people are having the same problem. They said they would put me on a call back to let me know what they find out after they do some research, but I am not getting my hopes up to high. I'll let you know what they find out though.

But damn to lose 90+ hours in a game like FFXII, breaks your heart :( .

I transferred all my PS2 saves (I own 180 PS2 games) to my PS3, seven memory cards or so. Then saved my most important saves to a couple PS2 cards so I could sell the rest for fun and profit.

I heard about this problem, but it mostly appears to be isolated incidents. Just in case, I backed up some MORE of my most important PS2 saves on to my PSP, and then moved them on to my PC just in case something ever goes wrong.

    So far, everything is fine.

Two saves on the same system doesn't provide much protection (and someone in fact encountered a double-deletion). What you should probably do if you're concerned--though it can't be automated--is copy your PS2 saves to a thumb drive or SD card, and then also possibly to your PC. That's just good backup behavior.

I can only imagine how disheartening something like this would be. In my case, I gave up playing Wind Waker because 4 hours into a gaming session the console locked up on me. Even sitting through those 4 hours seemed not worth it, so to lose dozens of hours in multiple games ... I feel your pain guys.

Man I feel for ya, I always kept all my RPG saves on one memory card for my playstation, I had 100% all the final fantasies(even with the horrible load times of VI) and Chrono Cross, Trigger and Breath of fire 3.

It didn't really bother me as much as I thought it would, like at all, but even so I hate replaying 30 minutes of game due to a death, much less 30 hours of Final Fantasy XII.

I remember about that viewtiful Joe demo too, that hella sucked(I didn't experience it, but I was on the message boards around the same time).

They should definitely find a way of reimbursement(though you can find saves online that are in the same area usually)

I'm not that angry. I didn't lose too much data. If it was an RPG I had been playing for 30 hours or so, I would've really been mad, but it was just a few short games so I can easily get back to where I was in a few hours of play if I so desire it. But this issue better be fixed soon, because I do want to play some RPGs and finish other long games (Valkyrie Profile 2, Okami, Rogue Galaxy, Beyond Good & Evil...).

Who knows, you may yet be hit. What is your firmware version, by the way? Everyone I've heard that has had this happen to them upgraded to 1.50 first. I do have a 64Mb USB drive, so I should make use of it from here on out. I guess I'll buy Rogue Galaxy and play it, but back up the save to the USB drive before I quit. I really, really shouldn't have to do this just to play a game. This thing better be fixed soon.

Well it wasn't the upgrading process that did it. Don't think you're in the clear just because it hasn't happened yet. I hadn't had any problems and I thought I was just fine, and then all of a sudden I wake up to find my saves were gone.

To those who have had this problem, apparently the newest update released today, 1.51, is supposed to fix this problem. I got a call from one of the Sony guys I complained to the other day and he told me that this latest update should fix the problem they were having. However, it still does not bring back all those hours of FFXII.....
