Help me find an HDTV to rub my dick on.. buy.

Well long story short a long dispute with a former employer has left me 750 dollars richer (only half of what I was owed, but still better than nothing). So now I'm thinking of getting a new TV. I'd like an HDTV for my room ranging from the 36-42" range between 750 and 1000 bucks. So a few suggestions would be mighty helpful. I'll be hooking my Wii60 to it and possibly my computer in the future.

I just want the best bang for my buck, something that will look good for TV as well as videogames, is between the 36 and 42 inch range, and between 750 and 1000 dollars(sure a tiny bit of wiggle room is allowed).

I'll post the entire story in the retail thread if you guys help me get a good TV. I swear it is an epic story that will be worth it.

Fry's has the Sony 32" Bravia LCD for 999, also the 46" LCD3 Rear Projection for 999. Both are great tvs and Sony, I would say has the best LCD display out there, the rear projection is great too, my dad just picked up the rear projection because he needed bigger than 32.

Edit: Westinghouse isn't bad, you can check out that model at BestBuy, actually I just checked the BB site and its cheaper at BB than the site you linked. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8114541&st=westing+house&type=product&id=1158318442758

Edit2: Nope wait, its 720p. I saw that set in-store at bestbuy on Sunday, it wasn't bad but nothing too impressive either (the 720 one), infact the HP there looked better and again, the Bravia blew them all away.

I don't know how Olevia performs but this set looks good for your needs, couple of component inputs, 1600:1 contrast, 8 ms, 720p.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16889022032#spec

Samsung and Sony over 32 inch get alittle bit pricey, like around 1200+ so that might be out of your budget in this situation. How far do you plan on sitting from the tv? Because if it's only like 5-6 feet you could be fine with a 32 inch too. I just got a 26 inch Sony and am roughly four feet away and thats even a bit big for my room.

Olevias arent that great. I saw a bunch of them at tiger direct (The retail store) and while they were ok for the price, i probably wouldnt game on them. I can see lag being an issue.

Ive been whoring it constantly since i bought it, but Envision makes nice TVs. 600 CND for a 27" LCD (800 for the 32"), looked nicer than some of the other offbrand tvs in the 900CND range for the same size. Doesnt compare to the sony or samsungs, but it was also just under 1/2 the price. Couldnt ask for more inputs either. Fuckers got everything.

If you want to go for a brand name though, the Sony Bravias are really nice, as are the Samsungs, all of them.

The first Westy linked above has been getting raved about and creamed over on the AVS forums. I'd hit it.

I'd be wary about anything Sony (watch out PA board bias!). Discussing with friends who work for Best Buy, as much as they're forced to push Sony TVs, the things apparently have a very high rate of defective return..

Man its been awhile since I felt the need to post. Anyhow, I've worked for Sony damn near 6 months now selling their TVs and in that 6 months not one has come back defective. I don't know if thats telling. My parents just bought the 32s200a and it looks a lot better than I thought it would; I own the 50a2000 and its an amazing set though well out of your price range. Any questions on Sony tvs though feel free to ask me!

I'm in the same position, soon getting an HD tv. To the OP - why not wait until after the superbowl? It seems logical that prices would go down after that.

If anyone is in a reccommending mood, they could also recommend me a 40-46 inch LCD 1080p, that I'll be getting mostly for gaming

    Edit: Price Range $1500-2500

This is what I own and recommend VERY STRONGLY.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16889022029

Olevia sets can really can't be assessed by looking at them in the store. The factory settings and the Showroom display mode that they are by default in are quite horrid. Also, Olevia screens have USB ports for upgrading the firmware, which I doubt any retailer does for their showroom sets.

I have the Olevia I linked to and Westinghouse's newest 32'' set. Both are 720p/1080i sets. Out of the box the Westy beat the tar out of the Olevia.

However, once I upgraded the firmware, toyed around with a home theater calibration DVD, the Olevia outperforms the Westinghouse in all situations. Color intensity, white/black levels, and refresh rate are all hands-down better on my Olevia.

    I really, REALLY, like it.

I don't mean to hijack, but I was considering getting this Samsung 46" DLP

    http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5034795]

It seems nice, by the numbers. My current set is a Samsung, but its nearly as old as dirt.

Ive found the 42" Variety of the same TV at a couple of places online for 900$ or less. Right now there seems to be a lot of free shipping deals and price cuts on Samsungs.

There are also people who buy an HDTV, watch it for the Superbowl and then return it back to the store, so the store then sells it back to you with the open item discount. It couldn't hurt to wait for a couple more weeks.

I've been eyeing the Samsung 60 inch DLPs for a long time now, and its what I plan to buy once the money is saved for it. As far as DLP goes, Samsung is either the best, or damn near the top. Some people don't like DLP because they see the rainbow effect very easily while others (myself included) don't. Best bet would be to go into a best buy and look at the Samsung DLPs and see the picture for yourself.

Westinghouse has made a huge push for TV marketshare after languishing for years as a low quality appliance manufacturer. Now they're turning out very nice quality flat panels at bargain prices. In fact, they're the first to have a 2160P display.

I'm with the other dudes, pick up either the 42" or 37" 1080P Westinghouse. They're unbelievably good deals.

They're the same, I just didn't notice your link tagged on to that "here" at the end. Plus for some reason I thought you were canadian, don't ask why!

Shipping I wouldn't know about, amazon gave us some trial thing that comes with free shipping for a couple months.

I know I heard somewhere that that anything 1,000:1 or above is at least decent. My HDTV is 1,000:1 and I have no problems with the contrast after tooling with the settings a little. Then again, its a bit smaller than the one he's talking about (26")

And while I dont know about that particular model, everything I've heard about Westinghouse has been positive.

I would reccomend the Sylvania I got, but it seems the model only comes in 26 or 32. Great TV for the price, though. A solid HD that size for $500 is almost unheard of.

I guess I should have been more specific.

My monitor is at 650:1 contrast ratio.

This seems perfectly acceptable, whites look white, blacks look black.

In doing some reading, it would seem most manufacturers grossly overstate their contrast ratio. What would be considered a normal "honest" ratio?

I'd personally stay away from Westinghouse, they have all kinds of HDMI sync issues, and the one I saw didn't look very good to me compared to the competition - I'd spend the extra $1000(?) for a Sharp or JVC or Sony, that's just me though. For the price they are ok I guess, though you can do better.
