What the fuck did we do to deserve either of those events yesterday?

WEC's on Thursday. Gotta finish your vegetables before you get dessert.
It is a pretty exciting card.

    Jose Aldo vs Manny Gamburyan
    Jamie Varner vs Donald Cerrone
    Miguel Torres vs Charlie Valencia
    Korean Zombie vs George Roop
    Leonard Garcia vs Mark Hominick

edit: wait, how do we do mmaplayground picks for WEC?

Interesting guy, I liked how he finished his fight. But he looks like I have seen him somewhere before...

Ugh. I can't wait until next PAFC. I was in the final 4 last time and this one has just been one horrible thing after another.

I had the feeling in the back of head that I was throwing myself away by betting for Cro-Cop (along with all the others) but I didn't care.

If Cro-Cop didn't win by a knock out there was no point of a tomorrow. Cro Cop himself getting knocked out was a sign that I should stop trying.

Now I don't know how to feel about Cro-Cop's next decision for his career either. I'm still shocked by how bad his performance was.

IMO the problem with overly cautious fighters could in part be solved through judging, specifically a judge being more willing to score a round 10-10. In a hypothetical round where striking is even, if one fighter gets a takedown and doesn't do anything with it he wins that round 10-9 typically. So that in effect becomes the smartest strategy for a lot of skillsets. I don't blame the fighters for taking the least risky route to victory.

But if a round where you take your opponent down and lay on him and nothing else is scored 10-10 then the incentive to do that goes away and IMO the average UFC fight gets more exciting. This makes sense since a takedown (unless it's a slam or something that does damage) is supposed to be a means to an end (the end being either a sub or GnP, and I mean real damaging GnP, not rabbit punches), not an end in itself.

We all remember when CroCop was awesome and had awesome fights. It's hard to let that go.

That being said, I figured he was too old and out of shape to get past gatekeeper status (at best) after his first few fights in the UFC. I'd imagine that the next few years watching Fedor are going to be the same. But with Fedor, I will always believe...

He won the Pride Open-Weight Grand Prix like 4 years ago, he's only 36 and he has beaten some of the best in the sport. One would assume that when you have one of the most feared weapons in the entire sport ("Left leg, cemetery") you would have a chance against most fighters.

Of course if you decide not to use that weapon and not really do anything then yes there is no reason to expect him to win.

    Edit: Fixed

    Left leg, cemetery.

As in his most feared weapon is now buried in some cemetery somewhere.

Aldo vs. Manvel is so hard to call.

    It's like Silva vs. anyone.

I really want Manvel to win.

But in my coeur d'coeurs, I know it's not meant to be.

I dunno if any of you guys read mmatorch, but I came across this article
    http://www.mmatorch.com/artman2/publish/Guest_Editorials_20/article_6960.shtml
today and am really not sure what to think. I always knew mma like most contact sports took a toll on the fighters, but I didn't realize how bad it could get so quickly. I don't think I'll stop watching the sport, but I really wish the organizations that can afford it would take better care of their fighters, and that there was another way to look into this CTE thing that didn't involve those suffering from it to be dead already.

Anyway I thought it was an interesting read, though I guess its not much of a surprise that the human body, resilient though it is, is not meant to be punched in the head on any sort of regular basis.
