PAX Prime - Reverse Signing for Wil Wheaton

edited September 2010 in PAX Archive
So I read Wil's post about his PAX Prime schedule this year and having less time for signings, and while initially disappointed I completely understand where he's coming from - he should take some time out, kick back and have fun at PAX with the rest of us. This got me to thinking that it would be fun to do something fun for Wil, so I figured if he's not going to be signing stuff for us, we should turn around and sign stuff for him.

So here is what I propose - if you have the time grab a writing implement, something to sign, jot down a quick message and sign it, and drop it off at his booth in bandland. Sign a schedule, some swag from the expo hall, a picture you drew of one of his characters - whatever is convenient and/or entertaining. If we get a dozen or so people to sign something and drop it off, I think that would be pretty funny... but if we got a hundred, that would be better. Basically, the more people in on it, the better it gets.

Now, this is in the spirit of fun - so please follow Wil's advice and don't be a dick. It should be as simple as that. Anyone else in on this?

That sounds kind of fun. I like community projects, especially in the name of showing appreciation to a beloved PAX-goer. I'm down if some more people join up, and I'll be traveling with a small group who will probably go along with it too.

I know exactly what I can sign. I'm sure he'll be a bit surprised to see a certain character sheet coming back to him....^^

I would be up for joining this, although if there was a large poster or something that could be out for many of us to sign that could be given to wil near the end of pax that would be sweet. Kind of like a 'get well soon' but instead a 'stay awesome'

I think this might be a better idea than a large amount of different items. But as long as Wheaton's law is followed, I'm sure he'd be flattered either way.

    Hmmm.

I may pick up a Moleskine for people to "reverse Will Wheaton signing" sign. They can do little sketches in the margins or sign at the top or bottom of pages, but still produce a small, portable, useful item.

I like this idea a lot! I got four others with me who'd also be down for it. having a bunch of people sign one large thing would make more sense and be easier for him to take care of.

I like the idea of us all signing a poster/notebook/whatever to give to him, too. Should we try to have a place where we can meet and all sign it, or pass it from person to person, or find the person who has it, or...?

Good for Wil. It's not like there's another PAX he can go to and just enjoy...these are it. Honestly I feel like I'd have shared more with him just knowing he's somewhere out on the convention floor with me taking it in just like I am, than waiting in an absurd line for a minute or two of face-time and an autograph.

And yes, I like this idea.

I went out and bought a fancy Moleskine and some sharpies... silver and black. I've got a few normal pens too. The nice thing about Moleskines is they have those little pockets, so if anyone wants to give me a loose thing to put in it I can. I may also get some tape so we can tape stuff to the pages.

I think I'll keep mine on me: I trust the PAXites in general, but I will have PENS and can be sure it doesn't get lost. Alternately, I may pass it around but put my contact info on a post-it, hoping it'll get back to me in case of emergency.

I'd suggest we make a hashtag. #ReverseSign or something like that... that way people who have a centralized signing thing can make their locations known via the tweets.

    That might violate Wheaton's Law.

For those who may not have seen the Twitter, himself's got new signing times:

tl;dr: My Friday and Sunday signings at PAX have been moved from 10am to 1pm. The Saturday signing is unchanged, and will remain at 10.

Especially if we all team up and sign a few small things.

That said, I'm bringing the Moleskine I bought to have people sign for him on the pub crawl, as a Gryffindor. Look for the blue jersey, red skirt, and yellow tights.

Totally in. I'll figure something out. So just drop it by randomly when he's not there? It'd be pretty neat to get something there before he goes to his booth officially on Friday, so I'll probably do that :) Don't want to me the only one...

EDIT: Just found a super-creepy star trek clock that I had laying around, with WW's little 12 year old face plastered on it. That will be what I am signing.

I gave my little donation to Wil today, a nice little coin I made housed in a nice little wooden box. I told him about the "Reverse Signing" and he LOVED the idea. Wil is one of the nicest people in the universe, and I hope Aeofel comes back to us.

I carried the Moleskine around most of the con, asking anyone adjacent to me if they wanted to sign it. I got a number of signatures and then went to his signing line, where I got even MORE signatures and notes.

Wil was incredibly happy and moved by it, even though it was sloppy and not full.

I'm really sorry that I didn't find some of the people I knew wanted to sign it. The good news is, I plan on doing this again, better, stronger, faster. Basically, the new book starts now. I'll be purchasing a new book very soon (I have my eye on a particular type), and I'll be collecting signatures, sketches, photos, anything flat and tapeable or writeable that you want to give or say to Wil. If you want to give me something to tape or paste into the next book now, I'll be at the Post-PAX party.

Hopefully I'll be able to make it to East and Prime again next year and do this right. Well, I already did it right, but do it BETTER. Thanks again for the idea, EnvyBot.

Post Pax party is at the Taphouse tonight, but is officially sold out. However if you want to come hang in the main bar of the taphouse that's still open to the public. I'll be the girl in the blue "Aww, Muffin" shirt, if you want to grab me and have me get the book.

Right now the "book" is just a pad of notepaper I bought. I have my eye on a proper, nicely bound book but I'll paste anything anyone writes tonight into the proper book when I get it.

I was in the front of the line for the Acquisitions Inc. (Live D&D panel) and caught Wil has he was entering the room. Gave him a picture of me from Wootstock - Portland after he signed my boob! He laughed and said "Nice!"
