I was reading in the article Tycho wrote "As I've said, I find the service worthwhile at a few bucks a month, and with the cards I grabbed yesterday I'll be paying thirty-eight dollars a year for the foreseeable future."
Of course it's a bit conspiracy theory-ish, but what if Microsoft made the pay hike just to get people to buy cards like that at a "discount" that is actually just a regular price. It is effectively garnering pledges from customers for longer term use of xbox live. If you live in England and pay monthly, now you are encouraged to buy the cheaper 3-month or year-long subscriptions. If you live in America, you have the choice of paying more next year or buying multiple years worth of subscription in "discount" cards.
Quitting the service is also an option, but Microsoft is likely (and legitimately,) expecting people to bitch and moan and then pay up. If they are predicting their service to die out in the foreseeable future, this is a totally legitimate business move for them. It's also legitimate if they view their consumer base as loyal or able to afford an extra $10 a year. I know most people from the U.S., Ireland, and England can. South America is different, I think the percentage of people that own gaming systems AND internet there is pretty low. But hey, who knows.
All I have to say is if you seriously think Microsoft is dicking you over and you choose to continue to pay for their service in any way, you are supporting their decision to increase the pay. If you actually want to do something, vote with your money and support PSN or OnLive or some other subpar service. Or go outside or play chess (I think that game is still in beta but it's good enough to have a giant community of pros.) Dude or play rune demo that game is sweet as fuck. Ok ok I'll shut up now.
