Does anyone know anything about [Maya] and Particles?

Ok, so I'm relatively new to Maya, and we're working on a project that requires some particle stuff. Details to follow in the spoiler.

Basically, I've created a flock of particles (clouds (s/w) that are supposed to represent fireflies. To add to the effect, I gave them a glow in the particleCloud settings, and then animated them. The scene has a directional light, but no background.

The reason why I haven't added a background is because we need to place the animation of the particles flocking about over a painted still. So where there is no glow, it needs to be completely white, and the glow needs preserve it's own transparency so we can easily overlay the final animation over the background.

However, when I render out in a format that preserves transparency (using for example, PNG) the glow completely disappears, and I've found no way to fix this issue. I've tried applying a surface shader instead, but I get the same result when I render out. I don't really know how I would solve this issue.

I am rendering with Maya Software, production quality, and at 1920x1080. 16:9 though the last two shouldn't make a difference.

All I need is for my image to have 1) a transparent background and 2) which preserves the glow given out by the particles. I have tried just foregoing all of this and adding the glow in after effects, but it just doesn't look anywhere near as nice.

Would be pretty awesome if anyone knew exactly what the problem is.

I know nothing or particle effects...but if you can't get a reply back from *these* forums, you should hit up the Polycount forums and ask the question over there - I'm sure somebody will be able to help you out.

Heh, thanks, I have the same question up over at CGTalk but it's a bit highbrow for this beginner's stuff. I'll try polycount as well, cause it's a bit urgent.

I can't believe something this simple has taken up nearly five hours of my time so far. >.<

Maya Software might not be the renderer you want for that.

But I know nothing about particles.

I don't use Maya but it sounds like it might be premultiplying the alpha when you save it out with an alpha channel. There might be an option to try turning this off. Alternatively, I don't know wha you're using to composite but could you save the image without an alpha channel (just on a black background) and use a blending mode such as multiply?

Unfortunately, cloud particles can only be rendered by Maya Software. Unless I can render the glow seperately?

I think you might be onto something about pre multiplying the alpha. I'll have a look into it from the fcheck window. It always loads up fine in fcheck.... just not in any other program.
