The Stranger has returned, and he's still got Wrath. [ODDWORLD]
I thought for sure that this was dead and buried since EA was doing its best to pretend it didn't exist, yet somehow Stranger's Wrath has returned.
We reported some time ago that the developers responsible for Gravity Crash had teamed up with Oddworld Inhabitants on a new project. Today we learned exactly what that is. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is being remade for PlayStation 3.
The game was originally released for the first Xbox and will be enhanced for the PS3. It will be displayed in 720p, have more detailed characters, include normal mapping and self-shadowing effects, have remastered dialogue, and will support PlayStation Move.
Stranger's Wrath was well received when it was released in 2005 but should find a wider audience when it comes to PS3 next Spring.
According to Giant Bomb, developer Just Add Water is not considering this an exclusive
So it'll probably make it over to 360 and PC at some point
Oddworld are already porting Stranger's Wrath to PC. They're going to release all four Oddworld games on Steam with Steam Achievements and whatnot (which I hope translates over to my already-bought Oddysee and Exoddus versions).
Whether it goes to 360 entirely depends on what Oddworld Inhabitants and Just Add Water want to do. If they do try to release it on 360 though, they'll have to find a publisher. There's no self-publishing on XBLA (unlike PSN and WiiWare) and Microsoft's not going to give them a hand, since it's not XBLA exclusive.
I thought the founder of Oddworld Inhabitants basically threw a fit and took his ball and went home when the video game industry didnt go his way and went to work on tv and movies? yeah, how'd that turn out for him?

Like two years ago he said in an interview that they were getting back into game design, though they're also still apparently working on a film called Citizen Siege.
I don't think anything has actually come of either of those two things yet, however.

I'm pretty sure the plan all along was to created the Citizen Siege animated film and games alongside each other. The gaming 'media' probably just decided to over-react to it, as usual.
And going by how many independent developers have closed down in the last couple of years, I'm sure things are going perfectly well for Lanning and Oddworld Inhabitants.
He's probably involved as much as he has to be, which is to say, not much. While they're calling it a remake, it's only a remake in the Square Enix sense of the word (how FFT: War of the Lions was a 'remake'). It's actually an upgraded port, so it's not like he needs to be that involved, outside of maybe approving whatever new textures or models they put into it.

Far as I know, general consensus is that Stranger's Wrath is the best game in the series.
I'm inclined to agree.

The first two are different enough from Stranger's Wrath that straight comparisons don't make a whole lot of sense. I enjoy Abe's adventures a lot and in a different way than SW. The only thing they really have in common is the setting.

Stranger's Wrath was awesome, but I know the twist now. Is it worth playing again?
Still are, though they're taking their time. The delay could be so they can include the same new assets they're adding to the PS3 version.
The full press release is available on Just Add Water's site. The part that wasn't mentioned by Joystiq was:
Absolutely, although I still own the Xbox version.
one of my all time favorites on the xbox
i am very excited
Well, I will do my part, if only to encourage them to go back and finish The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot.
Speaking of which, did anything come of the loudly announced plans to do animation and such?
I assume it'll be at 30 or 40. It's supposed to have Move support.
One of the Just Add Water employees is on GAF and his reply to questions were: I'm guessing 'Sweet ;-)' translates to a lower price than we'd expect.
Oh and he also said they're aiming for 60fps, it'll have MLAA and it'll be a full trophy list (so platinum).
Also, I can't believe some idiots out there still ask about Trophies for PS3 games
But it's just
It's like asking if 360 games have Achievements
Yes, any PS3 game coming out has Trophies, that shit is required now and has been for a long time
And even then, not going out of my way.
so fucking stoked for thissssss
Shame too as this was the first game in the series that was any fun.
So it'll probably make it over to 360 and PC at some point

Apparently that's still happening.

Maybe he needs a new hat.

why are you such a big liar
Funny, cuz I was just reading in the Arkham City issue of GI that they are doing stuff for 360, Wii, D'S and PSP too.
This news making me happy.
How was that?
I'm inclined to agree.
