Started playing GOG Duke 3D with eduke last night again. I've suddenly realised that I've only ever played about 2 stages into the final episode because I don't recognise the ones after at all! I must have watched my older bro finish the game back in the day.
It's a bit strange that in the first level of this episode they show every baddie in the whole game though, plus sharks. Way to blow your load early, Duke :P
A little easter egg, a sample of things to come. Looking forward to hearing Duke's words, and I can't wait to hear other opinions he has on various subjects.
I can't believe that Canadian retailers have yet to put up the Balls of Steel edition for pre-order. Just gotta put an order on that.
That's pretty lame, all things considered. That's like "____ Movie" levels of parody where "parody" means "reference."
Show master chief getting smashed or strung up or decompressed. Hopefully Duke SAYS something funny, but IMO that really isn't quite the level of things I was hoping for.

Like the Doom'ed space marine in the satanist's chapel?

Exactly. Or Luke Skywalker strung up on the moon. Or even something more subtle like the Earthquake in Episdoe 3 followed by duke going "I ain't afraid of no Quake."
Here it just seems they're going "Hey look, a Halo reference! You guys remember Halo, right!" There's no creativity behind it at all.

I think we need a bit more context. Seeing a space marine impaled on a spike doesn't mean anything.. It's the location that does.
... I never caught the Quake reference. Then again, I remember when Parallax had to put in Descent 3D's readme that the game was -NOT- quake, so..

Are you talking about the fourth or third chapter? As a kid, I never even knew the Atomic Edition existed. Getting DN3D off GoG was one of the greatest things I've ever bought. I just finished the entire game today. Gonna go back through in threeeeeeeeeeeeee-dddddeeeeee with eduke.
That Atomic chapter is fucking hard, huh? The three normal chapters are complete cakewalks by comparison. The new enemies are awesome, too. I wonder what a flying pig or a tank pig would look like in DNF... I can't wait to see what kind of absurd "porting" mods come around for DNF (or even how DN3D Reloaded takes on these things). Looking forward to someone recreating Duke 3D's "Life's a Beach" levels, in DNF.

I was kind of thinking, given the stuff we've seen, it'd be funny if an EDF officer, or some EDF "super soldier corp" was wearing Halo-esque armour, then got just stomped in seconds by baddies. Duke muses about how useless armour is (re: laughs heartily, insults them), and says the soldiers are wearing halos now.
I'm definitely hoping to stumble across a stream of famous corpses, though. Maybe Duke can finally get back at Caleb from Blood and Sam Stone from Serious Sam, for their own references to him. It's time for the king to retake that throne.
You know, the Gearbox forums is full of repetitious threads and nonsense, but there are also a good number of threads like this. It's not a complete listing, but it's fun to read over.

The third chapter, haven't played the fourth either. Looking forward to the challenge as I'm breezing through the third chapter at the moment. Maybe I'm just that damn good 8-)

Good luck with the fourth chapter. I don't even know why, but I was constantly getting beat down. Maybe it was the sheer volume of enemies or the introduction of new enemies, but the first half is tough and super fun.
It gets much easier, once you've learned how to deal with certain enemies.
Until just now, it seemed logical that I'd get this on PC, but I guess I was assuming that DNF would have a mod community for it like the one Duke 3D had....probably not a realistic expectation at this point. Still, I do hope the game fosters a mod community of some sort.
Have to admit, I laughed several times during that video.
Thanks to this thread I also pre-ordered the Balls of Steel edition from Amazon (PS3 unfortunately, as much as it kills me to play Duke on a console there's no Mac port announced yet).
Edit 1: In other news, I got eDuke 32 running without too many problems (running the latest Mac build from just last month). Only issue is that sound is pure static. Any suggestions on how to fix that?
Granted, shitty, unimportant items, but it still leaves me cold that on a 12 year old title they're trying to milk pre-orders. Especially with GameStop. Leaves me God damned cold.
Yes, GameStop bought out EB along time ago. Many places still say EB for some reason. The Canadian site is "gamestop.ca", says EB nowhere on the site, but when you look at the tab/window it says "EB Games Canada". Lots of formerly EB shop's have closed and moved a couple doors down, just for the sake of phasing out EB and changing names. Even more strange is that GameStop in Canada is like Starbucks, every corner, even if that means four across from each other.
GameStop is the problem one, anyways, not EB. Fond memories of reasonably priced product, knowledgeable employees and no pre-order crap from the EB days (two of these are publisher related, I know). Not so much under GameStop.

I'm actually still going to preorder at GS for convenience, but I will likely burn that preorder bonus card in their store
Looking at the BoS edition, I'm wondering about one of the items in it. The picture going around only shows a pair of poker chips, but is it an actual entire package of chips? For some reason, the idea of playing a game of poker with only Duke chips makes the entire thing seem that much more worth it.
Also hesitant to pre-order that BoS set because they've yet to announce any DRM stuff. Take-Two has been generally shit with DRM. From BioShock 1 to Borderlands, they've set some shitty standards. Despite promises that BS1 had "removed/patched" its DRM (but then only removed install limits), and Borderlands pre-release being talked up that "later editions wouldn't require/be printed with the DRM" (and then the first three pieces of the game all had SecuROM, and still do). Then there's the BioShock 2 fiasco, where they "upgraded" by going with GfWL's 15 install limit instead of SecuROM.
I'm tempted, but it's really hard to justify spending $90 on a game as a CAG addict. Especially when there are so many games to buy this year.

I was tempted to pre-order it, but then better sense got a hold of me and I realized, "God fuck, it's $90 for a goddamned game! That's like, 10-15 Steam deals!"

Edit: Hah! New video! Duke directed by Claptrap.

Not a bad video. I laughed.

Edit 2: Nevermind, figured it out.
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
I'd actually prefer not getting any more Borderlands expansions if they're gonna let others do them like with Claptrap.
He barrowed it when he was walking through that one scene in the Borderlands Game of the Year trailer.
6 billion guns in Borderlands. But Duke only needs 1.

Yeah, I punched the whole store.
EB Games?
EB Games still exists?
I thought GameStop took care of that problem a long time ago by buying them out

I quite literally spewed mountain dew out my nose when I heard 9000 vaporware of the year awards it was not a pleasant experiance.

Edit: Amazon still taking orders for PS3, so :?:
Wow. Lucky me!
To be fair, Amazon.com pre-orders don't actually charge you until the item ships, and you can cancel before then.
