Finally got on! Anybody in Limsa that could invite me to the linkshell? Character's name is Renalee Lee. Also, thanks a lot for the controller diagram. I'll try using that layout and make some adjustments if needed.
So, my punches from my pugilist class will be available with a sword and board equipped?
That's kind of odd... Or did you mean that that empty bar below my action bar is available? Not sure when I'm going to get something for that...
Also, God the idea of crafting in this game sends shivers of horror down my spine. The ui is soooo terrible and unresponsive, the LAST thing I want to do is waste my time clicking through ui windows to craft wooden swords and linen leggings...
Is crafting required in this game? If so it may be the wrong game for me after all.
Long story short, the punches won't be available but the TP abilities will. Concussive blow, haymaker, that sort of thing. The cooldown will be increased by 50% off-class, and the effectiveness is reduced by some ammount.
Crafting probably won't be required, but you'll definitely be limiting yourself by avoiding it.

I can say that I'll definitely be preordering the collector's edition today, if nothing else than to get out of the starter area before everyone else starts -_-

Yeah but we won't have to share it with poor people.
So if you crash or lag out during a leve quest, you lose the ability to complete that one? Or at least it seems that way since I crashed during one and its greyed out now. Logging in right away with 20 mins left on it, and it wasnt active still.
Yep. Try again in 48 hours.
So yeah, I know it's a stress test and everything might be a bit buggy right now, but had yet again a crash during a leve and I gotta say, that's some seriously annoying garbage right there. I'm hoping the crash issues will be diminished, but I'm thinking lagging out will still cause quite a deal of frustration.
Might be I'm just irritated that I have to wait yet again to almost complete a quest then have it crap out and have to wait another 48 hours.
I've got the collector's edition on deck as well. What are you guys planning to roll come release? I may go Maurader and pick up Archer a bit down the road, I don't know if gil will be as fast and loose as it is in the beta so I don't want to convert gil to damage from the beginning.

Oh, okay, thanks for the info.
Though you should know, crafting is a pretty nice way to gain physical XP, at least starting out.
So is there something special I have to do to get this game running at decent FPS? I have a decent rig....
GeForce 9800M GTS
4gigs RAM
I should be able to run it decently on SOME setting.
Also I finished the starter kill 3 rats quest and now I have no idea what to do.
So I've got a question on equipment that maybe some of you might have some experience with, let's say I make a brass hatchet it states "Optimal Rank 20", now my botany is only 8 what kind of penalties if any will I take for using the brass hatchet anyway?

I'm thinking of going Gladiator but picking up a Lance early on. I really don't want to start as Lancer solely due to the horrible Puffy Coat/No Pants look. I mean the coat would be fine if it came with actual pants.
Archer ended up being way too squishy without enough DPS (at least early) to make up for it for my tastes.

You should probably read my reply to you from before.
But for your benefit i'll say it again
If you lost a leve because you disconnected you should be able to get it again from the original place you got it. If you are in a party and you disconnect you can pick up right where you left off by accessing the crystal that you started the leve from and choosing to rejoin it.
Benefits from being in a group, sucks if you are soloing leves. hopefully they will address the issue if you are soloing but there is a perfectly working system currently implemented if you are grouping.

Meister, the mobility version of most GPU's aren't going to be doing the game at any sort of excellent, or maybe even bearable settings. They're quite limited when compared to the full desktop size version of a given card. But, that particular GPU was not so bad in 2008, so maybe you should lower resolution, not sure what aspect ratio you're trying to output but maybe go a few steps down (i.e. 1920x1080 -> 1280x720).

I don't think Archer is very squishy, okay maybe with the starting armor. But they can equip chain. Also it helps to raise VIT until at least the soft cap, as that'll give you a ton of HP. I basically went STR/DEX with a bit of VIT on the side until they hit 40. Raised VIT to 40, then focused back on STR/DEX at 2 points per.
As for DPS, I think I'm about even with an equally leveled Pugilist. Helps to get the Maple Longbow, and not run with the rank 1 arrows.

So I got in early and played some more. Thanks to some changes in my in-game locale, i've had better impressions of the game:
Mouse seems to be better now. It doesn't lag as much for me.
Limsa-whatever is a horribly designed cesspit. I rerolled to Ul'Dah and was stunned at how many accessible mobs there are for new characters. Compare this to Limsa, where every other mob is a goddamn Dodo that will bend you over and rape you if you so much as flick it. This makes leveling alot more enjoyable, as you can actually get your hands on mobs that aren't heavily camped.
Mages are hilariously powerful in the right hands. My current conjurer one-shots mobs before they even get a chance to aggro him. The only thing that slows me down are grouped mobs, which are apparently my hard counter until I can get my hands on a proper AOE spell.
A good white mage is needed to level quickly in Limsalabim/whatever it's called. The reason being that half the stuff there seems to have come from a deathworld, devoted to spawning overly cute creatures. A white mage can mitigate this and give you a wee bit more survivability.
Ul'Dah is where people go to actually progress quickly. Limsa is for people who want to flaunt their e-peen. I even walked into a group of people bitching about how horrible Limsa was by comparison.
Also, Ul'Dah's Levequest music rocks the fuck out compared to the other zones.

I have it on 1280x720 windowed now. Everything is on lowest. If I put the buffer to half the window size then I get like average 25fps, but it looks horrible...
I run other games like TF2 fine, it seems that on low setting at least this should be reasonable FPS.

Gladiator. I have a bad habit of picking useless/overpopulated classes in every MMO I ever play so hopefully going with a tank will fix that.

From my experience, when you crash during a solo leve it fails. You can neither retake nor exchange a failed (or successful) leve until the 48 hour cooldown is up.

Is Ul'Dah really that much easier? Maybe I should reroll....
Everything in Ul'dah is pretty much a stones throw away from the Adventurers Guild. Not to mention the settings just plain awesome. Even the local leve quests are awesome, being a Goldsmith creating Fanged Earrings, for a recent boom in erotic piercings in many of Ul'dahs "pillowhouses".

FYI this isn't true. I disconnected on a leve and have not been able to get it back from the NPC who gave it to me, nor does it let me access it again at the Aetheryte. This includes things like fieldcraft leves (which I'm not sure why you would do these in a group, or if you even can...).
I don't see a newer one, but I have seen people praising that hardware mouse tweak like it was the second coming of Christ. Maybe Square will take the hint, not that I'm complaining. I've been thrilled since I started using a controller.
Does anyone know in Ul'Dah whether one can get all the primary armaments for the various jobs? I originally rolled in Ul'Dah and wanted to get into Armorsmithing, but couldn't find a vendor to sell the necessary items.
Between those and the performance improvements of the last patch, I'm very pleased with the way this is starting to turn out.
The Hardware Mouse patches the client to give proper mouse. I'm using the Windower at the moment, in addition to providing a hardware mouse, it lets you run fullscreen and alt-tab, etc. It is.. pretty nice.
just frustrated man. i got on at like 3am and played till 430. leveled goldsmithing and weaving a bit. I never would have bothered if i knew they were going to roll back.
