With 7 x64, I just ran the program and it downloaded and installed with zero problems.

The game requires 17gigs of free space on your C drive, regardless of where you install it for whatever crazy reason.

Oh, but that doesn't have anything to do with the installer not working on 64bit systems...which isn't true at all.

That's more what I was wondering.

Man.. I thought cool! This game is in open beta! Yes! I'd love to try it out. Sign up for beta.. says I don't have enough space.. Are you kidding me? Looked up the problem, turns out the installer doesn't support 64 bit programs. Not the game, just the installer.. Suck my balls, installer. Did it on my laptop, transferred the file back to my 64 bit system and was ready to download... Stuck at 0%.. Looked up the problem. Says I have to open a bunch of ports. Oh jesus, FUCK YOU FINAL FANTASY. Guess who doesn't care about trying you out anymore.

You didn't look up the correct information then. The not enough space has nothing to do with being 64bit. It requires that space to be available on the drive that holds your Documents folder. I had the same issue and all I did was change my Documents folder from my SSD drive I use for C: to one of my larger storage drives.

Being DMZ helps, otherwise forwarding the respective ports will help as well. This is nothing new that you don't already have to do to get Bit Torrent or Steam games like TF2 to work through a firewall already.

    You are overreacting.

Use bittorrent to get the patches. I have gotten maybe 3 out of the 20 or so patches since I got into beta in cb3 to actually dl through the updater.

I've gotten all the patches to download through the updated by using DMZ. If you don't want to do that however you can utilize other torrent programs for them, or most fansites have access to the patches themselves for direct download. Most of the info should be in the OP.

So I got this installed last night, but it won't let me play. It says the server is down for maintenance, but my wife is able to log in next to me.

    Halp!

edit: It seems to be a problem relating to IE. It's not letting me log into the beta website through IE either, I get the same message.
Who's dumb idea was it to tie the log-in to a MMO to web browser anyway?

So I rolled a new character yesterday morning, an Elezen (?) conjurer. Waited till I was rank 5 to do the first few leves, and did them solo on 2* difficulty no problem. Proceeded to grind out some levels and ranks. Hit rank 12 level 14 today. Wandered around for quite awhile trying to find a Maple Wand... which I eventually did, for 20k. However, the wear on this thing is extreme. I bought it around rank 10, at the end of rank 11 I started doing minimal damage on mobs and had to hunt around for a bit to find out why. My wand had 0 durability. Argh. I tried to select it in my inventory to set it up for repair, but that button never was available, just the repair yourself button.

Anyway, tl;dr new conjurer to 12/14 in two days - broken weapons aren't useful.

Conjurers are pretty great solo. Once you get cure it's like you can't die.

I'm curious what you did to rank though. Spirit dart spam, or did you play the "right" way?

On that note, skill gain is kind of wonky. It's stupid that spirit dart and a nuke have the same chance to proc a skill gain, and gain roughly the same amount of skill even though one does 100 damage for one stamina bar and one does 200+ damage for two. It pretty much punishes you from using big attacks, and I would think on a long enough timeline would make a class like marauder level significantly slower than a pugilist.

That doesn't even get into the issue of healing xp, which apparently does occur but is rare.

Spirit dart spam is pretty OP, and when you get stuff like Shock Spikes it's even better. (Man Shock Spikes is OP). I've been leveling conjurer and thaumaturge at the same time so access to stuff like Poison coupled with Spirit Dart spam is nice too. Too much nuking just seems too mana intensive solo, especially when the tp > mp move misses so much.

This upsets me, because I really want to play a healer. You can't heal leves because reward is based on damage done to the mob and there's almost 0 skill gain from pure healing. They've tried so hard to make a classless MMO that they're punishing those of us who WANT to heal, versus the people who get pigeonholed into it.

So I'm gonna go ahead and try forwarding some ports, which I've never done before. I got to the screen where I'm "adding a new service" and giving them description of service, name or ip address, external port number, and internal port number. I've never done this before and I don't want to fuck anything up so... When people tell me to open a port and give me 12345-12345 the first set of numbers goes in external port number and the second set in internal?

The internal port can be whatever, but it's probably best to keep it the same as the external. They might just be signifying that it's a range of only 1 number. Depending on your router setup, some can take just a port number, some want a range.

I can't decide what to name my character for release. I've ended up going with the new, tail-less Galka, but somehow sticking with "Beef Supreme" seems a little silly for later on when the NPCs are all like "Thank you, Beef Supreme, for defeating the evil Dark Lord Sephiragabranthifka, Lord of Dark Things!"

As a chemistry major, I hope that I one day get to test whether or not I can beat fire in a lab with lightning.

Seriously though, after some intense googling and testing, I can't make fucking heads or tails of why certain mobs drop certain shards - BUT NOT ALL THE TIME - and what elements they are and whatever. I feel like this is probably pretty important as a caster and I seem to remember than in FF11 you could base what element stuff was by what crystals it dropped, by stuff drops 5 different kinds of shards that don't make any sense.

From my limited experimentation fighting lots of the low lvl mobs and some in the teens generally the same rules for crystal dropping / elemental affiliation remain true from FFXI. The difference is the addition of shards. Mobs seem to have a primary crystal drop, a primary shard drop, and two secondary shard drops. I'll try to explain using two examples.

    Dodo
    Primary Crystal = Wind Crystal
Primary Shard = 6 Wind Shards
Secondary Shard = 3 Water Shards
Secondary Shard = 3 Lightning Shards

    Lone Wolf
    Primary Crystal = Lightning Crystal
Primary Shard = 6 Lightning Shards
Secondary Shard = 3 Fire Shards
Secondary Shard = 3 Wind Shards

Now I'm not 100% on the secondary shard drops. I was really only noticing the primary crystal/shard drops and farming for those two items. The rarity of the crystals is pretty high, but not ridiculous on these two mobs. Stuff below ~ lvl 10 though very rarely drop crystals. I would assume with this setup that Dodo's would be weak to Water and Wolves would be weak to Wind. There is a book up on a desk in the Conjurer's guild in Gridania that explains the elemental wheel, but since I have been mostly lvl'ing a melee class I didn't pay a ton of attention. Believe it is Earth > Ice > Water > Wind > Lightning > Fire. If those secondary shards are correct, it would indicate that mobs drop shards before and after their primary element on the wheel.

Again, I will have to test this more thoroughly after maintenance. There is some variance I think in the amount of shards dropped as well dependent on mob lvl.

That elemental wheel is totally different from the story we're told by the Aetheryte crystal.

    According to the crystal it's:

    Fire > ice > wind (> fire)

    and

    Lightning > water > earth (> lightning).

This is in the direction of strong > weak.

Your elemental alignment (in stat allocation) seems to make a big difference in crystal drops, most noticably in gathering. Fish with full wind allocation, you get all wind shards, once you're high enough in gathering to get shards when you succeed. Probably similar to some degree for mob drops and also why people seem to be getting different shards from the same mobs.

In regards to wind shards while fishing, I think everyone just gets wind shards while fishing. I know I read on another forum that people were raking in wind shards the more they progressed their fishing skill. THAT might be worth testing.
