Jumping leads to one thing in an online RPG.

    Getting stuck.

Firsthand experience has shown me that lacking the ability to jump is a major benefit to filtering out stupid avoidable support tickets.

For me it just makes me feel like I'm doing something when I am in fact not. Which in a game that has a lot of waiting around, or running from place to place, makes it less boring.

On the matter of jumping: Not being able to jump doesn't bother me too much. While there's certainly a level of "There's really not that much reason not to be able to jump" it's far, far more annoying to not be able to walk across "obstacles" that anyone with functioning legs, or even the ability to crawl, wouldn't be able to surmount.

Oh, did you want to cross over to this part of the map? We'd love to let you, but there's a 5cm tall "wall" in your way. It looks too dangerous to move across. You'd better find another route.

There's also a bit of a problem with invisible walls on cliffs, where sometimes you can "jump" down them and sometimes you can't, but there's not really any rhyme or reason to it. The areas around Grindania are especially bad about this.

Asheron's call had the best jump/fall mechanics. You had a jump skill that you could points into, in addition to making you jump further, it let you fall further and take less damage. So having high jump in a cliffy area was a great way to elude PKs, as you could jump down cliffs that would kill them if they decided to follow.

It really is a design issue, like in MGS Snake can take down Hind D with stinger missile, but can't jump over a fence meter high. Those sort of thing really stand out as odd.

But in FFXIV i have never been weirded out by absense of jumping, because the world so far never required me to jump. My characer can probably jump, but is not needed to.

If it were a Devil May Cry MMO without the ability to jump that would clearly be outside of the spirit of the series.

But this is Final Fantasy, the latest iteration of which was effectively on rails for 90% of the game.

I disbelieve. I can't walk 5 minutes in this game without wishing there was a jump button. Or more accurately, the ability to go up or down 1-3 foot tall ledges.

So it took me 18 hours to get the game installed, but since I am on vacation all week I really had nothing better to do.

First question. How in the fudge do you find quests? I have yet to see any sort of quest marker?
Second question. How do you know what mobs will completely kill you? I killed a couple of rats outside of Lumisa(?) and then a Dodo hit me for over 300hp in one shot. =(

Continue and do the story quest all the way through. Otherwise there are no traditional quests, but you can pick up guildleves from the Adventurer's Guild in your town.

And you can find the difficulty of the mob by looking to the left of their name. Blue -> Green -> Yellow -> Orange -> Red. Stick with yellow and below. Though even green Dodos can kick my ass.

Disclaimer - color may have zero to do with actual mob difficulty. I've had leve mobs that were red because I was solo that I could one shot, and I've had mobs that were blue because I was in a group that one shot us.
