So I was thinking of buying my girlfriend one of those electronic cigarette gadgets as an alternative to the real thing. I was wondering: does anyone here have experience using one? Also if anyone could point me in the direction of a reputable website where I could purchase one that would be very helpful. Also, I live in ontario canada if that helps. Thanks guys.

I've used the NJOY electronic cigarette on and off for a while now. It's not made to be a stop-smoking aid, so you can't really treat it as one. As an alternative to cigarettes, it's pretty decent. Some people get throat problems and sinus infections from them, though, thus, I've stocked up on parts from family members that have tried them and didn't like them.

The NJOY site is reputable though, and my dad ordered all of his stuff from them. You can probably also find them or something similar in your local smoke shop.

A good friend of mine tried the e-cig as a way to slowly wean herself off the addiction; apparently you can get cartridges with specific nicotine content, going all the way down to a 0% "placebo" cartridge. so yeah, you can use them to aid quitting. It didn't end up working for her because even though they're designed to be similar to cigarettes, the vapor is still a bit different from the real deal, and she couldn't get used to it.

Anyway, they're still cool, and I think e-cigs work out cheaper in the long run than cigarettes. Plus they don't make everything around you stink like smoke, since there's no smoke. They're much more pleasant to be around if smoking bugs you.

Having recently purchased a starter kit for myself, here are a few useful links:

You might find this list of reviews useful: http://www.electroniccigarettereview.com/reviews/reviews-by-e-cig-style/

They helped me decide on my current kit from http://luckyslicks.com/

I actually chose the brand above because they are refillable with liquid nicotine. This offers 2 advantages: 1) You can save money in the long run by purchasing bottles of liquid nicotine and refilling the cartridges yourself.
    2) You can purchase a variety of different flavors (like Dr. Pepper, Coffee, chocolate, etc.) and refill with those as opposed to buying flavored cartridges.

So far the quality of the Lucky Slicks e-cig has been exceptional. I don't have any experience with their customer service because I haven't had to *call* their customer service.

Just as an FYI, here's a link to a place you can see some of the flavors available: http://www.route66vapor.com/categories/E-Juice-Liquid-10ml/

I highly recommend a refillable unit. If long-term price point is not as much of an issue, I'm certain that other cartridge-only pieces will be more than suitable.

Have you actually talked to her about this? Otherwise you might be wasting your money.

    This is a good point.

Coming from being a smoker to being a person who uses the vaporizers, I can say thats it's a pretty big difference in sensation.

Talking to her about it after you educate yourself about the product would most likely be a good thing.

There are a lot of advantages to switching:

    - No bad smell
    - Less expensive over the long run
    - Decreased likelihood of contracting cancer and other diseases
    - More socially acceptable
    - This list could go on all day, ad naseum.

But there are also some negatives:

    - Decreased sensation from actually inhaling smoke (when I was a smoker, I enjoyed the burn)
    - Using the inhaler takes some getting used to...it's different inhaling vaporized nicotine than it is inhaling smoke. If you're used to smoking, judging how much nicotine to inhale takes some practice.
    - Ordering everything off the internet as opposed to just going to the store and picking up a pack of smokes.

I'm sure others could add some stuff in both columns.

My best friend has one of these and he loves it. He still smokes regular cigarettes, but he still goes to his parent's place pretty regularly. They ask him not to smoke around their house, so he just takes one of these to the restroom with him whenever he's gotta go. He gets his fix, the place doesn't reek of smoke, nobody is the wiser and he actually likes the way it tastes.

One caveat though. Apparently some of the flavors are pretty bad. I'll have to check with him to see what he likes/doesn't like.

We bought one for use on stage (Washington State law prohibits smoking in buildings and provides no exceptions for theatrical performances. Also the fire marshall doesn't like our theatre company :( ).

The cast member who tested it out said that the nicotine hit was a bit more intense than with an actual cigarette. The vapor looked like real cigarette smoke. I don't know which brand we used though.

My fiance and I just bought one on a trip to Chicago for a friend's wedding, where we wouldn't be able to smoke for like ten hours. We usually do patches or gum when we'll be in smoke-free zones for a long time, but since Michigan just enacted the smoking ban in all restaurants, we're not feeling especially charitable to non-smokers at all ("Fuck those assholes" is about the strongest language I've ever heard from her, and it's on this topic).

I would say it's a pretty great product overall, but there are some things to consider. It has to be plugged it to charge the battery, and it uses filters that contain nicotine as the dispensable, so there is some upkeep. No more than buying pack after pack of cigs and lighters, but it's an adjustment.

The taste is completely different. It sort of feels like you're smoking, but much less intense, since all you can feel is light water vapor. The flavor is almost completely unnoticeable, but after a few sessions you may get a slight aftertaste that is neither pleasant or unpleasant. I'm told the vapor you exhale is indistinguishable from the breath of a well-kept young woman otherwise (drunken experiment whereupon my fiance blew vapor into the face of my best bud's new wife to test it).

You can indeed use them as a stop-smoking aid, or just a healthier alternative. They are legally not allowed to be marketed as stop-smoking aids however, so they will always insist that you cannot do it. But just like gum and patches, the filters come in different concentrations of nicotine. Also, there is no tar or anything like that, so no stained teeth, no reeking car and clothes, no haze in the house.

Apparently there are some people who have something like an allergic reaction to the specific stuff in the filters, but it's pretty rare and not too serious (mostly like a mild cold from what I hear). Other than that, it's basically healthier in every way. Not as healthy as quitting, as my parents remind me every freaking time I see them, but better than still sucking down Camels or Marbs.

    I recommend.

I agree completely. It's not a huge drawback, but sometimes I feel a pang and miss the sting of a Marb 27.

Again I agree. We actually looked at each other in the car and wondered how we knew how much to puff and when to stop, since a filter has like 7 cigarettes worth of nicotine in it, but the book with the thing we got said that each filter should last as long as a pack... a little confusing. We aim for three to five hits once per hour, and coming away from being pack-a-day smokers, it's like cutting back a bit. As near as we can tell from the nicfits, anyway.

My local gas stations actually sell the units, filters, car chargers, alternate flavors, menthol additive, the whole shabang. Even the little crappy place on my way to work that only stocks pepsi and not coke has em!

Yeah there is a place near me that sells some of these things, like starter kits, cartridges and a couple additives, but the selection is pretty limited and it's overpriced compared to what you'll find online. It's convenient (and you pay for that convenience), but I think it's still pretty rare to find these items in stores.

I guess it's just luck of the draw if you happen to have a place nearby that sells what you need. Personally, I still prefer to order online in bulk to save money. =)

I checked, and you're right, I do pay more buying at the store. But it's still a little cheaper than cigarettes themselves, and there's always that "We have to quit soon anyway, don't buy cartons or anything bulk" mentality. That we've had for like five years.

Word to the wise, don't EVER EVER calculate how much money you've spent on smoking during your lifetime. I could have literally bought several cars instead of killing myself slowly. Pathetic.

Yeah I did this before too. I irrationally justified it as an 'asshole tax'. In other words, I paid the government and businesses a tax so I didn't have to kill all these assholes around me when I didn't have nicotine. Told you it was irrational justification. Almost as bad as spending money on cigarettes for a decade instead of getting a Mercedes or something.

While I can't speak for using them because I haven't, yet. I've actually got a friend who recently started a business manufacturing refill carts. I have several other friends who use them and I feel safe saying they are quality. He also sells some hardware but you can probably get it cheaper elsewhere.

By the way, and sorry to threadjack a wee bit here...but if anyone knows where I can buy liquid nicotine at bulk wholesale prices (and I do mean BULK, it's not like this stuff expires), let me know here or send me a PM if you prefer.

Edit: Wow, nevermind. Google-fu'ed up a 1000mL bottle of the stuff for $140. That's like buying 1000 packs of cigarettes for less than 2 c-notes if you include shipping. http://e-cig.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=589

    pros
    - no smoke
    - no smell
    - lots easier on the lungs, I can breath again
    - can smoke indoors
    - lots cheaper. I bought a $40 pipe and $40 worth of juice. Bottle is still more than half full and it's been 6+ months
    - serves the nic addiction

    cons
    - when the dam thing doesn't work it frustrating. It's like having a lighter that doesn't work and no other options.
    - It gets rid of my cravings, but I never feel totally satisfied. It's like wanking to a JC Pennies catalog when you have an internet full of hardcore porn. Just feels like you're missing out on something.
    - My nic consummation has probably went up. Wish there was a way to measure it. I crank on that thing for hours when I'm gaming and eventually end up with a headache.

Now THIS is an honest opinion.
