The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
- Yearly forcast of sales/profits remained unchanged (disapointing to investors).
- $7.1 Billion in the bank.
- Nearly 1.4 million Wii hardware systems have connected to the Internet worldwide as of January 24.
- Approximately 1.5 million VC games downloaded as of January 24.
- 6 million shipped/7 million manufactured by end of fiscal year (March 31)
- Replacing the wrist straps cost 1 billion yen (about 8 million dollars).
- Thanks to extremely strong Nintendo DS sales and the successful launch of Wii, Nintendo's consolidated net sales were up 72.8 percent over the same nine-month period last year, and operating income was up 102.5 percent.
- Nintendo Co., which also makes GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS handheld machines, recorded group net profit of 131.9 billion yen ($1.1 billion; €850 million) in the first nine months of the fiscal year, up dramatically from 92.2 billion yen the same period a year earlier. The company did not break down quarterly numbers. Sales soared 73 percent to 712.6 billion yen ($5.9 billion; €4.5 billion) during the April-December period from 412.3 billion yen the previous year, the Kyoto-based company said in a release.
- Nintendo is still trying to meet demand for its two-year-old DS portable player as weekly shipments of the touch-screen gadget soon sell out after being delivered to Tokyo retailers. The company's new Wii console, introduced in November, outsells Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 by about two-to-one in the U.S. and Japan.
- The company said it sold 18.9 million DS players globally in the nine months, helped by games such as ``New Super Mario Bros.'' that sold more than 1 million titles each.
``Monthly production of the DS in December and January was 2.5 million units, but it wasn't enough to satisfy the market,'' spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said by telephone. He said the company will maintain its holiday production schedule in February to try to meet demand.
- On Jan. 10, the company raised its sales forecasts for DS players this fiscal year by 15 percent to 23 million units and software by 22 percent to 100 million units, helped by games such as ``New Super Mario Bros.,'' ``Nintendogs'' and ``Brain Age.''
Shipments of the Wii, whose motion-sensitive controller enables users to swing it like a sword or tennis racket, are projected to reach 6 million this fiscal year, while games for the console will reach 21 million, compared with an earlier target of 17 million, the company said on Jan. 10.
- Nintendo manufactured 4 million Wii systems by the end of 2006 and during that time sold and delivered 3.19 million to its distributors and retail customers around the world.
Units sold by region:
JP 1,140,000
NA 1,250,000
OTHER 800,000
total 3,190,000
If anyone deserves success, it's Nintendo. Reggie is right when he says they're not arrogant.
I still can't believe GBAs are selling the amount they're still selling. It's insane.

I remember just a couple years ago, when Nintendo released its quarterly fiscal report for the first time. They were, like, $200M in the red or some such, in June. Everyone cried out doom and gloom, and said how this proves Nintendo is dying to Sony.
They've never had a down quarter since, and they've NEVER had a year where they haven't made a profit.
Also, 1.5M online Wii users is really, REALLY damned impressive given sell-through. It's a very strong base for them to go online with.

The Wii and the DS Lite totally saved their asses.
Seriously, the DS Lite was like a god-send for Nintendo.

Erm...
Re-read that.
The GBA was a life-saver for them, kept them going through the NGC. And the DS was sold-through exceedingly well too. The DSL was a boost, but it didn't save their lives like a god-send might.

My guess is its the number of "Wii hardware systems" like, ya know, the quote says in the OP.
and 1.5 was VC titles, 1.4 is # of consols that have been online

And considering there's no actual games online, either, it is quite good. The Virtual Console is a huge, huge draw, and Miis are strangely addicting. The telling tale, though, will be when Nintendo unveils what the hell they're going to do for online play. So far it's been totally under wraps, and I have the feeling a lot of people are going to be disappointed.
This part also made me chuckle:
- Yearly forcast of sales/profits remained unchanged (disapointing to investors).
"Sorry, investors -- we couldn't upgrade our profit forecast from 'Sextacular' to 'Globalthermonuclear.' Come back in six months, though."
the thing is, is that nintendo, even during the past few years where it was seen as 3rd....
it was still kcking ass and taking names in the hand held market. no-one could out do them, and no one bothered after a while. the PSP was seen as a huge upstart, but sony stumbled on decent release software and instaed focused on ashitty umd movie ports. because of this, nintendo bent the psp over a barrel and raped it until the memory sticks fell out.
dont get me wrong.. people still buy psps... but pale in comparison to the loyalty and fervor displayed by Japanese fans alone.
also, i'd like to point out the Nintendo MAKES a profit of the wii, and the controllers. sony on the other hand is hemorrhaging money into the stratosphere about the ps3.
Do you know why i think the ps3 will fail in the end? the processing power and the emphasis they placed on it. they expect games companies to invest millions into the games. in order to get this money back, they need to sell a lot of the game, right? well, with thier box being so pricey, not many boxes will be sold, there fore lowered sales, and vis a vis games companys either shying away from sony, or trying to make a product that will bankrupt them due to low sales.

Seriously.
So, wait. Am I reading this right? From $5.9 B of total sales, they made $1.1 B of profit? That is a damn nice profit margin! They must be keeping operating expenses down, too. Very impressive numbers.
Heh... imagining that each VC game sold gets a profit of (on average) about $5 (which is an educated guess) then even though the wrist strap fiasco was a setback, the VC game sales alone may have covered the cost.
At least they're not as bad as Microsoft though. As I recall, Microsoft sells about 6-10 360s a month in Japan according to sale charts.
It's not quite that bad, they still manage a few thousand per month, especially with the release of games like Blue Dragon. The small-but-hardcore Japanese FPS crowd, for example, loves the 360.

(Wii Sports has been a bestseller in Japan for a month now FYI.)
I am not sure how that works, someone please clarify.

It was their first and only loss since going public in 1962. Nintendo is so doomed.

On-topic, yeah, the virtual console is a gold mine. A brilliant investment.
I think in the UK though the numbers are pretty much even stevens.
