So if a person really hates using drones as their primary combat style, and wants to be halfway useful in fleet ops, other than the obvious (tackler), what should I be aiming for? Apocalypse? Maelstrom?
I guess what I'm getting at is the Drone UI sucks donkey dick and I'd like to try pewpew instead.
Set keyboard shortcuts and never touch that terrible UI again.
!!!
Wait, what? Aw damnit, I never thought to look into that.
Edit: Fuck me, it's "f" and "R" for drone combat? God, I wish I had known that before.
Granted, I was away for a year and a half and just came back this weekend, but I just figured these out yesterday. Makes my life SO MUCH EASIER.

And that checkbox that says you're drones don't scamper off after 4 different targets? That is unchecked by default?!

What the shit, I didn't know about any of this stuff. Fuck my ass, this will make things much easier.
The Drake is also a very decent solo moneymaker in Deklein. And cheap enough that when you get ganked, the only thing you really lose is your dignity. Luckily the people in MRCHI and goons in general will always be extremely understanding and supportive* when that happens.
I'm kind of hesitant to pick this up again. I've moved countries, and if I want to play from here, I have to put up with downtime at 9pm every night which might just be a deal-breaker.
Is the downtime usually the whole hour? I remember it usually working out at about 30 minutes, but I don't know if things have changed any. But more importantly, is it even worth playing if I'm only going to be on when everyone is asleep? I'd actually like to try shooting people this time around, and that requires having people to shoot.
I can honestly take or leave EVE, so I'm looking for honest opinions here.

They have been pretty good about downtime, it's usually less then 30 minutes. Plus, being one of the first people logged in after downtime gives you the opportunity to scour the belts for fresh faction spawns.
As for shooting people, large fleet engagements usually revolve around timers, so your likelihood of shooting people is wholly dependent on what bloc you are attacking. For instance, the russians usually set timers for right before or after downtime. The goons are fighting IRC right now (I think), and I'm pretty sure that they are american. I could be wrong, though.
If you right click on the four silly lines on the titlebar of the drones window there's are drone options dialog. One of them is "focus fire". Which, as mentioned, is off by default. :ccp:

I saw a werewolf drinkin' a pina colada at Trader Vic's.
And his hair was perfect.
That option to 'focus fire' is more like a suggestion to the drones, anyway. It hasn't worked 100% of the time since they introduced the feature. I guess CCP can't figure out how to fix it OR they don't care.

That's encouraging, I guess.
The other thing I really need to nail down is, what is fun to do in EVE? I guess I just never found any particular activity that clicked for me. I get that you have to grind a bit, either missions or mining or what have you before you can do the "fun" stuff... but what is there to do for fun? I thoroughly enjoyed my progress towards and eventual aquisition of a Stabber, but then realised I had nothing to do with it than rat, which I was already doing!
Suppose I have a basic rifter all ready to go that I'm prepared to lose in the name of adventure; how do I find mans to shoot? Whenever I've played before its been either feast or famine; no-one on and boring or "OH CRAP THEYRE COMING RUN AWAY!". Never had anything close to a "fight" against real people, just horrible rape or uncatchable cloakers picking off our miners.
I seem to remember hearing about some sort of faction warfare thing going on; could I get in on that? How does it work?
*edit* You know what always appealed to me? Hauling. Or smuggling. Buying low, selling high, evading pirates to bring in the motherload. Then selling the goods, buying a battleship with the proceeds and blowing up the pirates. That was always the dream, but it looked like it was going to take at least a couple of months of boring shit to get to that point. I wanted to be Han Solo, but it turns out I couldn't even afford the downpayment on the millenium falcon.
I also heard the word "exploration" thrown around a lot, but didn't find that it was actually a thing. A profitable thing anyway.
Faction warfare is not a bad place to start with some PVP. You can attack people of opposing faction without loosing sec status, you also get some extra FW missions. It can be full of blobs, but you will find some decent fights.
You might also look into Red vs Blue (sort of organized warfare, two corporations constantly in a state of war, fights involve similar sized fleets, with simillar size hulls). RvB has all sorts of silly rules, but it might be a decent place to start.
If you want to stick to high-sec, may I suggest ninja-salvaging? You provoke people to shoot at you by stealing their loot/salvage/mission items, and then shoot them in your pvp ship, while they are still in their pve ships. You have some control over who you fight with, and since they are unlikely to have point, you can warp out if you screw up. Not very profitable (unless you are really good at it, and get a lot of ransoms and/or shiny loot), but lots of fun.
Or you could fit some rifters and just fly into low sec, and attack everyone you meet. You'll loose all those rifters, likely without killing anyone, but you will learn A LOT.
I can't tell you about 0.0, since I've never been there. Heard it's fun.
Or you could fit some rifters and just fly into low sec, and attack everyone you meet. You'll loose all those rifters, likely without killing anyone, but you will learn A LOT.
Wouldn't I immediately get Concorded on my return?

Unless you pod people, you are unlikely to lower your sec status too much. In fact, if you kill some rats, you might gain sec status.
One of the advantages of just flying into low sec and trying to kill things is that you will quickly learn about gaining/loss of sec status, aggression rules, docking timers etc.
One thing I forgot to tell you, make sure that your clone is up to date and that you only have cheap implants. When you get podded (and you will get podded eventually) make sure to update your clone before undocking.
Well I started downloading the trial on steam, but when I went to make my account it said the website was down for maintainence. When I try again now, it says the key is in use. Buh? What do I do? Can I just create a new account from their website?
The main thing about this game is that you have to make your own fun. As many people have pointed out, EVE by itself is a terrible game.
Find a corp of like-minded individuals, with discernible goals that you can get behind, and have a blast.
Also, it's totally possible to do a Han Solo; just train up for blockade runners! They're T2 haulers that can fit a covert ops cloak, thus allowing you to move small, high-value items through low-sec with relative safety. Also this training plan will leave you with many of the skills necessary to be an excellent scout, which every corp is always in need of, no matter what their situation.
I have the feeling that as Incarna is rolled out, and then Dust 514, the world of low-sec smuggling may begin to get a hell of a lot more interesting. They've already updated the system so that contraband must be traded with both pilots in the same station (face to face, if you will). Drugs, small arms, planetary weapons, etc will all need to be manufactured, moved, and sold. Fun times ahead.
So is booster smuggling a viable way to make money? It sounds like I'd need to actually find a buyer and physically go to them then, not just put up a sell order. I'm suprised this is only a recent addition, the older articles i've found suggested this wasn't viable at all before boosters.

You can buy and sell boosters (drugs) on the market like anything else. I'm sure that the future items will be the same (unless they completely revamp the market system). The only items you can't sell on the market are faction/deadspace mods.
There are profits to be made in moving items from high sec to 0.0 in cloaky haulers (and eventually jump freighters if you train for them). The margins between high sec market hubs and 0.0 stations are usually 15% and beyond. Start with T2 and Meta 4 mods, then move into fuels and ships when you get the freighter.
If you join MerchI there's a service which will import stuff from Jita to our market hub for 200 isk/m3, so it's not really worth doing blockade runner importing on an ISK/h basis. Unless you have your own JF you probably just want to buy something in Jita, contract it to the JF importer service, and then sell it once it gets to our market hub. It's more like being a shop owner than Han Solo.
Besides which high-sec pirates often declare war on Goonswarm, making undocking from Jita 4-4 "interesting".
*sigh* don't ever let anyone tell you there's "no point" to anything in EVE. Make your own damn fun.
Just left a 0.0 alliance for this exact reason. So much conformity, so little imagination, except at the very top.
No disrespect; I understand why the alliances have to operate that way, but nullsec does not = endgame.
If you stick with low-sec and worm-hole space, there will be plenty of room for you to smuggle to your heart's content.
That being said, Goons are awesome.
And despite what everyone tells you, you don't need to be associated with a big alliance to live in 0.0 space. You don't even need a Corp. Hell, I've been living by myself in White Noise botter systems for a few weeks now.
Go to low sec/0.0/WH for the isk. Join an alliance for people to play the game with.
Ok, one last thing. This is going to be pretty much just personal preference but...
What race?
I've been Caldari and Minmatar, and I found the Minmatar ships more interesting, plus they make that whooshy noise when they warp. 8-)
That said, there are some very nice Caldari ships further down the line (Raven) that it would be nice to have access to... eventually, and I've never even tried Gallente. I like the idea of blasters + drones, but a lot of the Gallente ships are ugly as hell*. Except the Thorax. I like the Thorax a lot already. Still leaning towards Minmatar though, because what I realistically need are a lot of cheap disposable frigates, and rifters never seemed to be in short supply. Plus I already know how to fit one.
Come to think of it, MOST of the ships in EVE are ugly as hell. The Amarr have the nicest looking I guess, but I'm not playing them because they're space-racists
I am under the impression, possibly wrong, that race doesn't matter as all newbees start with the same skills and a bonus to skill gain for the first few weeks.
Gallente ships are good for solo ratting. They have the best carrier. They rely on Bees (drones) and the UI for drones is kinda icky. Generally speaking Gallente ships are considered sub-par, especially given our current tactics for fleet combat.
From what I understand, they did some changes to Minmatar ships recently (or some other related mechanic) that makes them extremely good. But I'm a 3 year old newb, so someone else can probably explain that better.
If I had to reroll, and I honestly almost did, I would go Minmatar. But it doesn't matter. It takes like 2-3 days to cross train other faction's ships. Just pick an avatar that looks interesting and then aim for one of the day plans --- Goon 60, MerchI 35, etc. Those will get you a good sample of various things to do in game, and are a good basis to build on.
Happy Birthday, EVE Online

So I finally got around to logging in, and was there a graphical overhaul that I missed, or do t2 guns have a different on-ship graphic than t1? Because the guns on my ship look a lot more badass than they used to now that I've upgraded to t2.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Gallente has the best SC. Minmatar has the best carrier, although they are all good in their own way.
are you high?
Minmatar caps: because training mixed tanks and mixed weapons systems is so much fun.
Carriers are for triage. The nid is best at triage. You don't have to train any weapon system, let alone 2 for a carrier so pretty sure that's a moot point.
