has anyone played section 8 prejudice? im either going to get that or the new maps for blops, but i dunno.
Just in case you haven't decided yet (which might be a bit unlikely): Section 8 is fun, but the population seems sparse. Most games I play it's 10-ish people, and the rest are bots. Some game modes are bots only.
But I like it, and it's cheap-ish. Good customization options, quite a bit of depth.
It probably isn't what you want if you're looking for any kind of lasting community, though.
Yeah. Do they appear during online or offline races, or all the time?
I've actually only been playing single-player. They appear every 3-5 loading screens, in place of the tips. It's pretty much the worst thing I've ever seen to break the atmosphere of a game - here you are, geared up for a high-speed race in a hyper-stylish future world, and suddenly here's an annoyingly-clever TV commercial from the real world in 2011 for a Honda Civic. And it's the same. Damn. Ad. Every. Time.
So, I'm thinking of picking up Red Faction: Guerilla w/ DLC, but first I'll ask, how many people here have the PS3 version and would still be willing to play MP?

i looked at the leaderboards and there were only like 120 people on the ps3 global leaderboard, so i took a pass on it. it looked like it could be fun but without people playing it whats the point?
So, I guess we should be expecting Breath of Fire IV to hit the PSOne Classics on August 16th. Nothing on BoFIII, though, which sounds like they may have screwed themselves somewhere along the line. (I wonder if it was when they did the UMD re-release for Japan and Europe.)

but which playstation 3 should I buy if I want one?
I heard I should get the smallest harddrive one seeing as I can just plug in my own harddrive if I need more space, but is there any difference between the slim and fat models or any known overheating/whatever issues with some of the models that I should avoid?

Just looking for you guys' expertise on this.
Unless you're going after specific features (really old fat for PS2 BC, fat+old firmware for Linux), you'll want to go for the latest model you can find. The later the model, the less power they use and the less heat they produce. Though I'd wait until at least after GamesCom in a couple weeks to buy one, since there's a decent chance they'll drop the price sometime soon.
And yeah, HDD size is a non-issue. You can just buy a standard 2.5" SATA drive and throw it in there.

How many games do you guys have that you need a new HDD? I've heard of people installing 1TB HDDs while I doubt I'll get to use half of my 160GB.
Anyway, the update is here! Highlights are Galaga Legions DX and WH40K Kill Team, so you know, your pick of dual joystick shooters.
I upgraded (guessing because I can't really remember) my 80GB to 320GB. Rock Band chews up a lot of space, I've got a dozen or so PSN games (including PSOne/PSP games) and the extra space lets me be lazy about deleting demos (20+) and large installs for games I've already beaten. Really I'd say 160GB is plenty unless you're storing your media on the PS3 HDD as well, but your mileage may vary.
I really need to actually play these demos at some point...

whoa, galaga legions dx is bananas. i dont think its going to grab me quite as much as the completely superb pacman CE DX, but im digging it a lot none the less.
This was exactly the type of advice I was looking for, thanks!
No problem.
As for SkyEye's question, well I installed my 320GB a couple years ago and when it last worked, still had about 60GB's left. It was filled up with installs for all the games I owned (even if I had no intention of playing them again) and a ton of PSN stuff (>60 PSN games [including some multi-episode Telltale games], ~13 PS1 games and ~14 PSP games). Plus a number of game trailers and save games (including the f'n 500MB Afrika save...). If the PS Store were as awesome as Steam, I probably would've had to upgrade by now but at this point, 320GB is plenty really.
Anyway, I got my brother to log into my account and buy a years PSN+ subscription just before the +3 months promotion ran out. I needed to get PSN+ to get my save games back (since I backed up most of them when we got the free month), so figured I may as well get 15 months out of it. Better be some damn good promotions coming up.
Should get my PS3 back next week, hopefully I don't have the same problems I had a couple of years ago ("fix" it, breaks a week later, repeat). I've got Catherine sitting on my shelf waiting for me to play it (not that I would've had time to play it this week anyway but still, it's nice to have the option).
How many games do you guys have that you need a new HDD? I've heard of people installing 1TB HDDs while I doubt I'll get to use half of my 160GB.
My first PS3 was a 40gb model. It wasn't a problem until the really good games started appearing on PSN. After things like Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty, Siren, Wipeout HD and a few others, as well as things like Guitar Hero/Rock Band DLC and game patches (Burnout Paradise patches go over 1gb all up), it got to the point where I needed to remove games I wasn't playing to fit others. Same with game installs, some are just brutal.
I threw a 320gb hard drive in and filled it to about 100gb between game installs, PSN games, patches and DLC. When my PS3 exploded and I grabbed a 160gb slim... well, I wasn't going to not put that 320gb back in.
We’re excited to introduce a new PlayStation Network event: PLAY. PLAY is a brand-new annual program, where we’re bringing you four of the season’s hottest PlayStation Network action titles. With every purchase of a PLAY title in the PlayStation Store throughout the duration of the program, you’ll receive a separate piece of DLC for each game, plus a new theme with every pre-order. If these incentives aren’t enough, if you’re 18 years or older and purchase all four PLAY titles in the PlayStation Store, you’ll get a voucher code for PAYDAY: The Heist as a bonus gift. And, PlayStation Plus subscribers will get an automatic 20% off every purchase.
Pre-orders will be available for all four PLAY titles starting next week on August 9 in the PlayStation Store. Remember, in order to qualify to receive PAYDAY: The Heist as a bonus gift, your purchases must be made by September 19, 2011.
23 August: Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online
30 August: The Baconing (i.e. Deathspank 3)
6 September: Bloodrayne: Betrayal
13 September: Renegade Ops
20 September: Payday: The Heist
All titles are $15 ($12 for PS+ subscribers), except Payday, which is $20 but free for those that buy all the others. Also, pre-order bonuses for digital games are apparently now a thing.
Far Cry 2 — Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out “The Jackal”, a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit their weaknesses, and neutralise their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force.

Driver: San Francisco marks the return of the blockbuster driving franchise. Gamers play John Tanner, a hardened detective involved in a relentless manhunt throughout the City by the Bay. Thanks to a groundbreaking gameplay feature, players can now seamlessly shift between more than a hundred licensed vehicles, keeping them constantly in the heart of the action. With its timeless atmosphere, unique car handling and renewed playability, Driver: San Francisco offers the free-roaming, classic, cinematic car chase experience.
Of course, I remember it this week and it's so light it's barely worth posting about.
It's, uh, interesting that the Splinter Cell bundle is slightly more expensive (by just a couple of cents/pence) than buying the three games separately.
It's, uh, interesting that the Splinter Cell bundle is slightly more expensive (by just a couple of cents/pence) than buying the three games separately.
The same thing happened with the Disgaea 3 Raspberryl (I think that's how it's spelled) DLC. It's humorous when that happens.
I would just like to point out the sales here again since the silly goose formatting the updates on the blog now screwed it all up. If you're looking for sales/updates in the same place as you used to be, you will be sorely disappointed since, for some reason they're posted pretty much at the end between DLC and Avatars. It's pretty much the dumbest place for them and it hurts my head to consider why this is a good idea, and was hoping they were going to, y'know, put them back in the good place.

Megaman 9 – DLC Bundle – Sale (PS3) (now $2.99, original price $4.99)
Boom Beats – Minis – Sale (PS3/PSP) (now $1.99, original price $3.99)
And apparently if this is anything to go by, Mega Man 1-3 (the import versions) are $2.99 each, and Mega Man 9 & 10 are $4.99 each. Or they will be. I guess.
Anyone know if Megaman 1 and 2 are worth it? I've got $6.50 just sitting in my wallet doing nothing, and I like my Megaman with rearranged soundtracks. However while I don't see anything wrong with MM1 online, gamefaqs says there's input lag with MM2 and MM3 has some sound issues. Anyone know how accurate that is and if it's worth skipping MM2 because of it?
To make things easier for PlayStation Plus subscribers, we’ve added the option to automate two existing features. The [Automatic Download] feature will now be called [Automatic Update] as a result of these new options.
A new auto upload function for online save data back-up will be added to make it easier to back-up your game save data. Under (Game), select the game for which you want to automatically upload saved data, and then press the Triangle button.
Also, Trophies will now sync automatically at the timing of Auto Download.
A new recommendation function will be added that enables you to share your recommendations for PlayStation Store items, such as games and videos, with PlayStation Network friends. You will be able to send messages with a store link from the product pages within the PlayStation Store.
Due to the increase in video applications being offered on PS3, we are adding a new category on the XMB called TV/Video Services. This category will include video applications such as Netflix, Hulu PLUS, and VUDU.
You’ll be able to find and download all of the video applications available on PS3 directly from this new XMB category.
A folder labeled “My Channels” within this category will allow you to easily access your downloaded applications.
Any videos downloaded from the PlayStation store will continue to be placed in the existing Video category on the XMB
Two updates for all of you enjoying Blu-ray 3D movies on PS3:
3D support will now be available when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-Ray
DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) will be supported while playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
3D digital photos in MPO format can now be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.
It kinda sucks that they're locking the trophy auto-sync behind the Plus pay wall.
Oh great. I just get my PS3 back, download the latest firmware on the PS3 site (cause it's faster than downloading through the PS3) and find out the new firmware has just come d t. t now. Guess I'll go download that now.
New features sound cool though, mostly since I've basically been forced into buying PSN+ (the alternative being I lose all my saves...).

I may pre-order Bloodrayne, it looks fantastic
I have no interest in Third Strike or Payday, the first two Deathspanks were terrible and I have no clue what Renegade Ops is other than it has the most generic title ever
There's a sale on THQ published stuff, it's mostly DLC, but Red Faction: Guerilla, Costume Quest and Stacking are on sale as well.

Time for another fairly sad installment of The Drop.

Medal of Honor: Frontline – The Nazi invasion is in full swing, and you’re the Lieutenant who’s going to put a stop to it. Step into the shoes of Lt. Jimmy Patterson once again, sweeping across Europe to rescue the innocent and destroy the opposition. The 15 assignments range from saving captured OSS operatives from a Nazi-held Dutch manor house to dismantling a German naval base. Your job is a little too tough for any one man to pull off on his own, so you’ll have a loyal group of soldiers and a slew of weaponry including the Liberator Pistol, Panzerschreck, MG42, and B.A.R. all of which will come to your aid in the heat of battle. Divided into five main missions, the gameplay is extensive and meticulously constructed, resulting in an experience that trumps earlier series installments.
PSone Classic
Breath of Fire IV — Princess Nina’s sister, Elina, has disappeared. Nina and her friend, Cray, set out to find her. Along the way, they encounter a young warrior name Ryu who has no recollection of his past. This troupe is about to find out that their quest to find Elina will lead them to something much bigger, which will require them to save the world. Take control of the three-member party (there are a total of six playable characters), and lead them into battle. Any member of the group not in the active party can be rotated into battle. When the going gets tough, have Ryu use his ability to transform into a dragon to give you an extra edge. If your characters keep getting killed, have them train under a master to improve their skills. Will Nina and the others be able to find Elina and save the world? Play Breath of Fire IV and find out.
Breath of Fire IV seems like the thing to tout this week. Which, admittedly is neat.

I've actually only been playing single-player. They appear every 3-5 loading screens, in place of the tips. PAL Update: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/08/03/heads-up-game-store-update-3rd-august-2011/
Also DLC, none of it looks particularly interesting to me.
Plus gets Crash Commando, Comix Zone, Rayman PSOne and a couple of Minis (OMG-Z! & Bashi Blocks) free.
There's also discounts for AC 1 & 2, Modnation Racers, Worms 2: Armageddon, Alien Zombie MegaDeath and Arcade Sports Bundle (Mini)

Of course, I remember it this week and it's so light it's barely worth posting about.
The same thing happened with the Disgaea 3 Raspberryl (I think that's how it's spelled) DLC. It's humorous when that happens.
Summer doldrums; just the stuff from the drop above, un poco de DLC nuevo, along with a Rockstar Games DLC sale.
And apparently if this is anything to go by, Mega Man 1-3 (the import versions) are $2.99 each, and Mega Man 9 & 10 are $4.99 each. Or they will be. I guess.
It's not that interesting really.
It kinda sucks that they're locking the trophy auto-sync behind the Plus pay wall.

DLC is mostly stuff for the usual DLC heavy games, but the Freddy Kreuger pack for Mortal Kombat arrives today and there's also a bundle pack for all the DLC kombatants (:P ) available now.
Plus update looks like this:
Yay, Galaga Legions DX.
I might check out the Resistance 3 beta cos free is a good price and it looks like it might be ok, I dunno.
edit: Seems that PSN will be down for maintenance from 4PM Thursday until 2AM Friday (BST).

The pleasure centre of my brain is on fire.
I want to know more PA people on Twitter.
Breath of Fire IV seems like the thing to tout this week. Which, admittedly is neat.
