I'm thinking of dyeing my hair soon. I've never done it before and am kind of nervous. Not really sure how to do it either. What brand of dye should I use? Is there anything I should avoid? Not sure if this will help with anything but I'm thinking of doing it teal or purple. Any tips will be appreciated.
Just so you know - usually, colours like teal and purple will not be completely permanent, but they will stain - the best I've found washes out (to a light pinky colour) in about 8 weeks.
If you're looking for something BRIGHT and AWESOME I recommend Special Effects ( http://www.funkyshop.com/se2.html - I use Deep Purple - a friend just got FishBowl (a teal) and it looks awesome.)
If your hair is dark and you want the maximum brightness, you'll need to bleach it first. I would recommend going to a professional for that - but if that's not in your stars, try out the Manic Panic bleaching kit (available on that site I linked) and for petes sake FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. (I know this first hand - when I was 16 I ended up with a bright white ring of hair at the top and the rest was flaming orange.)
For dying - put vaseline around your hairline, all over your ears, and neck. This will make sure that any dye that makes contact with your skin will wash out without any problem. It will NOT come out of your clothing - so be sure to get a towel from the dollar store that you are totally okay with ruining.
Follow the instructions - do the strand test first if you aren't sure about the colour, or if you have sensitive skin. The amount of time you leave it on WILL affect the final colour, so keep that in mind - you may want to do a few tests on a strand.
And - maybe most important of all - you CAN do this by yourself, but it's much more fun (and accurate) to get a buddy to help out.
Some beauty supply stores will have it, but mainly the ones that *only* carry beauty supplies, not your local Bartel's drugs or w/e.
Hot topic or similar stores may also carry some colors.
Also wash your hair good after you bleach it, use conditioner too, just make sure everything is all washed out and there is no product in your hair when you color it.

My hair is naturally brown-black. It is currently dark blue.
You will need to bleach the everloving shit out of your hair in order to get any color lighter than yours to 1) show and 2) stay. If your hair isn't very light the color won't show properly, and if it isn't very damaged the color won't cling to it, so even people with naturally light hair need to bleach their hair to keep the dye in more than a few weeks.
I am personally a huge fan of Manic Panic's Amplified Color series.
My hair is about down to my waist, so I can give some tips for dying longer hair, if you need it. I can also tell you that Manic Panic, regardless of whether you've bleached your hair enough for it to stay THERE, will stain everything else it comes into contact with. The absolute best way of removing it I've found is Fructis shampoo. This also means that Fructis, or a shampoo like it, will strip the dye out of your hair. Pantene is a much gentler shampoo, and I would recommend their shampoo for colored hair.
I am lucky to have long and fairly grease-proof hair (especially with all the bleachings it's taken), so I can get away with washing my hair about once a week. If you wash your hair every day, your color will dull and fade much faster, because as was pointed out by another poster, these dyes are all semi-permanent at best.
edit: If you go with Manic Panic they have every color of the rainbow and more available on their website, but fair warning: it's a pain to navigate and very 90's goth.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

Edit: My current hair color is black.
Check head shops, tattoo and piercing parlors for the your dye. I think Spencer's Gifts will have some too, if you have one in your area. I'd usually bleach my hair as white as possible before hand to get the color to look as bright as possible. The dye I used was sort of like finger paint, and you'd just slather it on. The recommendations suggest leaving it on for about an hour or something like that, but when I did that the color would fade and look like shit after a week or so. What I did instead was wrap my head in cellophane and go to bed for the night, and then wash it out in the morning. It would still fade, but much slower, and more evenly and generally look much, much better.
A beauty supply store will also have what you're looking for.
I don't know what area you're in, but there is a chain in the US called Sally Beauty Supply that sells dye and bottles and all the other paraphernalia that you would need for this project. Yes, they sell to salons, but regular people off the street can also walk in and buy stuff. Their clerks are pretty helpful too.
I always liked Special Effects. But as people have said, be prepared to stain yourself blue-ish in the shower for weeks. Pain in the ass. I dyed my hair various shades of red, magenta, and purple for a long time, and then finally tried blue. The reds were never a problem but oh god the blue. And it was a bitch to get rid of. It faded to a pretty terrible blue/green/grey color, which I would try to dye over with black, but the black never took properly so I ended up with just really dark blue/green/grey for awhile.
If you've never dyed before, have you considered doing brightly colored streaks or something as a starting point? It might not be a bad idea since you'll (A) have a chance to make sure you really dig the color, and (B) also not do as much damage to your hair (and yeah, if you're bleaching first, damage is a STRONG possibility).
Also, don't wash your hair the day or two before you dye -- let the natural oils protect the scalp a touch. And do NOT condition. You don't want to be grimy, but squeaky clean hair can sometimes be an issue when you dye.
And as stated, recruit a friend to help -- and if that friend has cosmetology experience, so much the better. Check out http://velvetdragon.com/etc/dye.html for some tips, too ... Good luck!

According to my stylist (who's also my colourist) this is an old wives tale and can prevent the dye from doing it's job properly. You don't want to do it on a freshly shampooed scalp but you can shower in the morning and then dye your hair that night no problem.
Get it professionally bleached or at the very least find a friend who bleaches their hair regularly to help you bleach it out. Otherwise you WILL miss a spot and it will look really silly.
I use kaleidocolors powder bleach in purple since it has a mild toner in it that will take out some of the yellow tones, with either a 20volume developer (for already bleached hair that needs touchups) or a 40vol (unbleached hair or hair with dark dyes in it). Keep in mind bleach will fuck your hair and you will need to baby it, especially if you go with a 40volume developer.
If you're using a depositing dye such as manic panic (meh) or special effects (fuck yeah sfx), leave it in as long as you can stand. I generally leave mine in for my 8 hour shift at work, and for PAX I slept in my blue dye the night before I left. The longer you leave it in, the more vivid the color will be and the longer it will take to wash out.
Pinks and oranges will last the longest, greens and purples fall in the middle, and blue tones will drop out the fastest. I went from PA forums blue to almost baby blue on the back of my head in 3 washes.
Will washing my hair everyday make it fade faster?
Yes. Every time you wash your hair, you'll be washing a bit of the dye out. Which is why leaving it in overnight like I suggested worked so well for me. It let it seep in and really set, which minimized the loss with each washing.
Avoid any shampoos with a lot of citrus, sea salt, or detoxing herbs (rosemary, tea tree, thyme, cinnamon, mint). These will all fade the color faster.
If your hair isn't oily a shampoo using macadamia nut oil, almond oil, or coconut oil/coconut cream/soy lechitin will help the color last longer.
Best bet is to try and avoid/minimize any use of lathering agents like SLS/SCS, ect only because they will also strip the color a bit faster- not near as much as the previous ingredients but over time it will go faster. Most shampoos will use some sort of lathering agent but there are some that come without or with minimal.
Also when you do wash it, make sure it is wet for as little time as possible. You can still wash it every day, your color will just fade faster, but washing it as fast as possible and getting out of the shower and towel drying or blow drying it as quickly as possible will help keep it from fading as fast.
I haven't heard of the hair washing thing at all, or at least, I wasn't warned about it. But the difference between my hair color and what it was dyed was pretty minimal. If I was going from black to light blue then I would be much more concerned.

Also, find a good conditioner, or get a good hair treatment from burt's bees (or both). Crispy hair is no fun.

It's gonna be at least a week before I dye it.
I have used both Manic Panic and Special Effects, and Special Effects is a vastly superior product.
I rarely used the entire bottle either, so its great for touch ups later on.
