Our first impression was mafia, then shifted towards faction when the first VC became more apparent (kill heretics) as well as them being a mirror faction and our lack of potent abilities.
Doubt it would have mattered Dagon. Didn't aggressively go for lime seer as it's a trap for stupid mafia (considering the options at the time) and of all clergymen you were most aggressive on trying to get the heretics killed - doubt holding back would have worked any better at all.
We really didn't foresee the church being scared of the lime vote, or them admitting to being a masoned "faction" either. I will admit, the clarification I made on "Do we die and seer green?" was not incredibly clear, but I thought it would get across the idea that, if they were green voted, they would appear as villagers (even so far as having "Villager" in their role).
That's because you knew that in color they were safe and heretics had no kill to oppose them. From where we started it was best to remain disguised and not reveal everyone by trying to fight the popular vote in an obvious reveal.
Playing more open would have worked better. Still don't think that with the same narrations (and of course opportunity for faculty even without a reasonable network head to convey their story) it would have worked to vote all heretics out.
What about Macguffin's role? If he seered Reg Rysk as a heretic, he wasn't the naive seer.
That happened during the day of peace, when everyone's abilities worked right, but the millers and thralls were still in place.
It happened during a moment of clarity.
Short answer? Flavor.
Edit: As far as Alegis coming up just Village, I can't account for that. The records are long gone. I could chalk it up to double hosting or a hasty narration night.
This is the second time I've been in a "good mafia." The other was Redemption. I had given up hope based on how the village acted in that game and didn't expect the village to listen to reason this game.

I'm just gonna put this out there. AkimboLegs seems to have some kind of paranoid fear of Village Idiots. Throghout the whole game I enjoyed his theories of masoned Village Idiots with a kill. It warmed my heart after such a bad role.
Also I laughed at all the frustration. It made me think maybe it wasn't so bad dying early on.
Thanks for running Demurist! I was dead for a while, and not all that informed while alive, so I didn't get frustrated or anything, and I can say that the entire experience was delightfully entertaining from my point of view! I'm glad you ran this, I'm glad it frustrated and confused people, because besides just the entertainment value (:P) we don't want Phallas to be predictable. Even if some bomb (which I don't think this did from my perspective, but eh), it's important to not always do the same thing.
This game definitely had an interesting concept, but I feel like one of its biggest flaws was that being a vanillager just wasn't a lot of fun. I feel like without the threat being clear there just wasn't a way for us to be a lot of help because all we could do was watch the conflict between the Church and the Faculty unfold. I didn't feel like there was much of a way for us to actually know who the bad guys were without blindly trusting the right side. In the end it just seemed like all vanillagers ever were in this game were pawns in the overall struggle between the two sides and that is never a good thing in any game.
Yes, I generally do have fun being a vanillager. I can look at voting records and posting patterns and speak up without really caring if I get killed. Sure, if you want to just sheep then there's not a whole lot of fun, but if you want to be proactive you can actually make a difference in a game.
In this game that wasn't really ever possible because the vanillagers never had any idea who the enemy was. The best we could do was spout out crazy theories with no evidence to back them.

I thought that was what vanillagers do best? :P
But seriously, I see what you mean. I was expecting things to go quite differently. I didn't think the clergy and faculty would reveal so early, giving the village more time to postulate and form ideas.
Note to self: The next time I use non standard mechanics, keep it to myself.

so it was a combination of my two least favorite roles.

Sorry, dude.
Not worth it.

Demurist Phalla!
Everyone is mafia and the only win condition is to post in all caps for three consecutive days.
Who told you?! Was it Notch? Winky? British Parliament Phalla is ruined!
I'VE ALREADY WON THIS GAME. FFFFFFFFFFFF.
