So, I have just been given a free PS2, and have noticed the wide shmup library it has. Some of my Favourite shmups are Gradius Galaxies, ikaruga, zero gunner 2 and Psyvariar 2.
I've got R-type final, Psyvariar complete, Gunbird - Special Edition and 1945 1+2. I've heard great things about Gradius V, anything else I should hit up? (Pal region btw)
edit - OP updated, because I remembered I just got an xbox too, but I imagine that shmups is slim pickins' on xbox anyway.
It's notable that the PS2 port of RAIDEN III is coming out in the US and Europe (I believe via UFO Interactive). Originally XSGames (Shikigami no Shiro 1 and 2, Wild Arms 4 and Alter Code F) was going to publish it but that seems to have fallen through. Gamestop actually has some marketing for it going up this Sunday so it must be a reality at this point.
You want to go out of your way to grab Taito Legends 2.
Neo Rasa on

DoI have to do that too? What are the odds they show up on XBLA/VC ?
Also I was mistaken, RAIDEN III already came out in Europe it seems via 505 Game Street.

That is some sweet news regarding a US release of Raiden III. I'd been contemplating getting a Japanese import, but now will wait.
What's on Taito Legends 2 that makes it recommended?
Would you be willing to dip into some Playstation games as well? Einhander was released in Europe wasn't it?
only got the jap version on ebay, but I've played it before, and didn't like it that much (didn't get too much into it thoguh, seems like the type of game that could have hidden depths)
Gradius V is my personal favorite - looks great, plays fair (most of the time), and is hard without being impossible.
Somewhat off topic, but I figure this is a good place to ask and it's not worth making its own thread: do games like Geometry Wars & Mutant Storm count as shmups or is the genre limited to scrolling games ala Gradius, Ikaruga, and R-Type?
is "Silpheed" and "Silpheed -the lost planet" exactly the same product, or is "the lost planet" a sequal/special edition?
Silpheed is a rad PC/SegaCD shmup, Silpheed: The Lost Planet is an entirely new game with the same perspective/similar weapons/etc.
Taito Legends 2 PS2 has a ton of great games on it (shmups bolded):
Alpine Ski
Arabian Magic
Balloon Bomber
Bonze Adventure (Jigoku Meguri in Japan)
Cameltry
Chack'n Pop
Cleopatra Fortune
Crazy Balloon Darius Gaiden
Don Doko Don
Dungeon Magic (Light Bringer in Japan)
Elevator Action Returns (Elevator Action 2 in US)
The Fairyland Story
Football Champ (Hat Trick Hero in Japan)
Front Line G-Darius
Gekirindan
Grid Seeker: Project Storm Hammer
Growl (Runark in Japan) Gun Frontier
Insector X
KiKi KaiKai
Kuri Kinton
Legend of Kage
Liquid Kids (Mizubaku Adventure in Japan) Lunar Rescue
Metal Black (Gun Frontier 2)
Nastar Warrior (Rastan [Saga] 2 in Japan, Nastar in other countries)
Puchi Carat
Puzzle Bobble 2 (Bust-A-Move 2 in the U.S. Market)
Qix
Raimais Ray Storm
Space Invaders 95 (Akkan-vaders in Japan)
Space Invaders DX
Super Space Invaders 91
Syvalion
Violence Fight
Wild Western

on a similar note, how easy is it to play imports on a slimline PAL PS2. And what is the president in a robot suit japan exclusive xbox game called?
Metal Wolf Chaos.
Glad you're getting Taito Legends 2, tremendous value as many of the games on there that got ported to the PSX/Saturn had a lot of slowdown/other differences whereas these are mostly perfect arcade ports (though some slowdown still happens).
It's notable that the XBox version of Taito Legends 2 lacks Balloon Bomber, Syvalion, G-Darius and one other game but has Ray Crisis and Cadash and two others I can't remember. Point being, if you don't already own it, at the price you just got the PS2 one for it's worth getting the XBox one just for Ray Crisis.
I'm kind of pissed neither of these seem to be getting a US release.

Nothing's officially been said one way or the other.
It's a shame the XBox one will never make it here, it supposedly has flawless emulation and a totally different/better interface than the PS2 version.
Anyone in the US with a PS2 should grab this ASAP if it makes it.

So anyone else find the so-called word "Shmup" incredibly fucking retarded and irritating? It's like people who say "Mickey D's" instead of McDonald's or "Mac an' cheese" instead of macaroni and cheese, as if the additional syllables are so much extra effort or that they intolerably delay their ability to convey their thoughts in a sentence.

It's pretty much an accepted abreviation. Deal with it.

The term has been around since an old Commodore 64 magazine (Zzap!! 64 was the one right?) coined it. It STAYS. Shoot'em up and shooter are used by people today to mean Half-Life 2 or Heroic Medal of Arms Held by Brothers on the Road to Duty 5. Shmup is the name for this genre now as far as the internet is concerned. No one will ever stop using the term because it would be stupid to.

If you're going to import, look into Mushihimesama. It's a fantastic Cave bullet hell shmup with a bug/nature theme that is a nice departure from the usual.
I would like to unrecommend Ibara since the bullets are very difficult to see, even if you tate your television.
You've also got DoDonPachi (PSX) and DoDonPachi: DaiOuJou (PS2) if you like Mushihimesama and want some more Cave shmups.
If you want some Run n' Gun shooting, import the Treasure collection for PS2 which includes Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, and Dynamite Heady (with superplays for all of them).
Also, Metal Wolf Chaos isn't just a joke game. It's a really great game with an impressive amount of destructibility.
Point being, if you don't already own it, at the price you just got the PS2 one for it's worth getting the XBox one just for Ray Crisis.
Just to clarify, it's Ray Force (aka Gunlock/Layer Section) not Ray Crisis that's exclusive to the xbox TL2. It's a better game than Ray Crisis, in my opinion. Other games exclusive to the xbox version along with Cadash are Bubble Symphony and Pop 'n' Pop.
You might want to consider removing that carrot from your arse some day.

Ray Storm is on Taito Legends 2? Sold, if it ever makes it here.
Wait, Ray Crisis and the other ones are on these collections too? And I don't have them yet? And I always wanted to try Cadash...
Also, feedback on Xyanide? I was going to buy it today(it dropped to $14.99, finally), and the manager told me that two of her employees said it was 'the worst game they ever played'.
But the story and gameplay seem interesting to me, and Gamerankings is mixed.

Ray Storm is on the ps2 TL2. Ray Force is on the xbox TL2. Ray Crisis isn't on either of them.
I wanted to like Xyanide, but I found its multi-directional 3d shooting approach a bit inprecise for my liking. And the bosses seem to take forever to kill, which gets a bit tiresome. I do plan to spend more time with it in future, but its fair to say that it didn't grab me in the way most traditional 2d-plane shmups tend to.

 GAH. That's what I get for not reading the whole thing and just skipping to what other people suggested.
So, yeah, the Gradius games are good . . . :P

So, has it been stated that it isn't coming out in the US? There is still a listing for it in the upcoming games section of the US Playstation site, listing March as the release date . ..

never mind.

You can get awesome PS2 stuff like this, Ibara and a whole lot more that I can't think of at the moment but are sitting near my TV.
If I ever go to Tokyo I am going to spend $100s on Japanese stuff like this.
I KISS YOU!
