Question for those who use shields...how do you keep it equipped with your sword? If I switch to my staff or my bow, and then switch back to my sword, I suddenly don't have my shield again.

Are you using Equipment Sets to switch to your staff or bow or are you just equipping that weapon?
If you're just changing your equipment in the menu, use equipment sets instead. If you are using equipment sets, then...it's probably a bug.
I'm assigning my weapons to the 4-8 keys. But there's not a way to do that for the shield.
Unless I'm misunderstanding what I'm doing.
(I'm assuming you're on the PC) hit F2 to open the Equipment menu. On the bottom of that, you'll see three buttons "1" "2" and "3". Click on "2" to switch to a second equipment set. Equip yourself again (don't forget armor), then do the same for "3." Then you can hit "t" to change from equipment set to equipment set.

These tombs are rather intimidating. I managed to stumble my way through the second one, but I was horribly lost for awhile. I actually started panicking thinking I would never find my way out. :P
I'm gonna have to break out the graph paper for the next one. These tombss are ridiculously labyrinthine.

Ah makes sense, thanks!
So uh, one more. When I push right click to block, my character doesn't raise it to block, he just raises his sword like normal. Huh.

From what I understand about shields they give an angle of protection. When you actively block you're attempting to parry with your weapon (and counter-attack). So the shield is an actual 'physics' shield that will block all the time.
e: As long as the attack happens from a direction the angle of your shield covers.

I thought of using graph paper too, and to be honest the notion of it made me giddy. Reminded me of the Bard's Tale/Wizardry days where it was all but a requirement.

Just follow a wall, you silly fellow.
Four rights won't take you far, my friend.
Then you're doing it wrong. The only way that wouldn't take you far is if that was the entire dungeon.
Anyone have any tips on melee combat and leveling?
My first chraracter is going full out melee. I don't have a lot of learned skills yet (only lvl 7). Pretty much putting all my points into str and end.
As for combat, I feel like I'm not very good at it. I basically just swing away and use my block breaker when it's ready.

That's pretty much all there is to it until you get more cooldowns. I've found polearms to be a much less frustrating experience than one handed, weapon and shield or two weapon. The reach means you don't have to be right in their face and your attacks can reliably hit more than one enemy at once.
I would spend some time on the savanna just running at wildlife and hitting them on a run to get a feel for distancing. As a melee character, you'll want tons of stamina so you can spend a whole fight running from enemy to enemy.
I'm level 15 and I'm killing virtually everything in one hit. Metallurgy is your go-to skill, that should be maxed at all times.
For melee characters, how are you investing your attribute points in Strength and Endurance? I've been keeping my Strength about double my Endurance, and at this point It's mostly been two in one and then two in the other. I wonder if I should change this ratio a little bit.

Is there any point to sailing? I've only found one island that you can't get to without it, and that had no NPC's on it, just mid-level camps of mobs. Is there any way to change the wind direction? It seems like it always blows west to east, which is pretty useless.
I'm doing a spellsword build. Mostly summoning and buffs to enhance my melee. I've been doing 2 points into strength and 1 into Endurance and magic each level. That's been working out pretty good for me thus far.
Were I doing a pure melee build I'd likely do 3 into strength and 1 into endurance. Every other level split the two evenly.
You people suggesting drums for auras are crazy. Harp + Trade Winds gives out twice the money.
I've also just created what I believe to be the most amazing spell ever. A missile that enchants the target causing anvils to rain down on their heads

I love those rain spells. But what's better is a missile that, on hit, creates an area effect where each enemy in the area gets its own personnel rain of anvils. At least I'm pretty sure you can do that.
Also... I just finished a quest line where a Mercenary Leader (big, rough tough dude) had me track down one of his less loyal personnel and he wanted me to dispatch them. When I got there I decided to talk to the guy instead of just off him. Turns out the secret he was keeping was that
He knew the leader was "More of a queen than a king, if you know what I mean."
So I didn't kill him, I let him go away to visit his family. When I got back to the leader I didn't lie to him, I told him I knew his secret. He was relieved I didn't kill the guy, and thanked me for not following his orders!

I've been doing 2end 2 str each level. Once My health gets sufficiently high I might change it to 3-1.
Anyone know what the various icons under an enemies name means when you hover your cursor over them? Are those their weaknesses?
I've got 24 attribute points I haven't spent and a couple of skill points. I've been melee this whole time, and haven't put a single point into anything but Endurance and Strength. I'm level 27, and I'm thinking of branching out.
Which makes more sense; Accuracy 29 and a bunch of weak archery skils or Willpower 29 and a bunch of weak spellcasting skills?

I just started playing. The game is pretty much a night and day difference from the first one. It is actually holding my interest. I like the low voice of the main character. It makes him sound like he has dubious morals. It seems like the same voice actor from the first one, but I am not fully certain.

I recommend some weak spellcasting skills. Mostly summons. If you plan it correctly, you can have a bunch of Varn, or Spiders, or Tripods, or Skeletons, or or or etc. that will distract whatever you're fighting. Focus on summon, and whatever specific critter you would prefer to fight with.
Alternately you could choose to buff yourself, or debuff the enemy. There are damage shields and there are spells that make the enemy take more damage.

I gotta say, I'm really liking this game the more I play. It's fun finding random dungeons and crawling through them, not knowing what's around the corner. One cave I found...uh, Fetid Den I think, didn't really have anything in it, other than a ton of scorpions. Still, gained a couple levels going through it.

I found one like that. You walk in the front door and see two master locked chests. The rest of the dungeon was just multiple levels of scorpions. No more chests or anything. Good times.

These labyrinths. I feel like I am lost forever. That whole "stick to a wall" think is great in theory, but that only works when the entrance and target share a wall.
I've got Earth Mastery 3 now. It says I should be able to add up to 3 earth cards. How do I do that? All I get is the option to change cards.
Assuming you have more than one earth card, there should be a little up and down arrow under the card (similar to the ones under the modifier cards) that you can use to add and remove extra cards.

I'll probably make it 3/1 fairly soon, since my hit points are feeling high enough for right now.
