I guess I will wait on purchasing this game until some of the issues present in this beta are ironed out
Sometimes these "betas" are just "play early for preordering" and don't actually involve bugfixing
But I am very interested, as long as they have a decent server browser
Normally I would share your cynicism, but Uber actually go the extra mile to tweak their games, as seen with the balance adjustments made to the 360 version.
And that's in the defiance of M$'s pay to update wankery. Something in their netcode makes the game update the properties of each unit before each match. It allows them to update and tweak on a whim without requiring an actual update.
I know what you're talking about, but that has absolutely nothing to do with netcode. Apparently on Xbox Live there's a text file for each game that the developers can edit. They call it something specific, but I don't remember what exactly. In the case of MNC, it'll download this text file when you start the game and it contains the numbers for a bunch of stuff.
Hotfixing? Because there was a limit to what it could do, hence waiting forever for the patch.
@Olivaw: Considering that they expressed how they were disheartened over the 360 update system, I think they'll be glad to move to Steam's system. Uber are good people.
This game really needs a chat system, not everyone has mics and there is plenty of time to type off a few commands just to get people to work together a little better. Also most games I join there will be at least 2-3 assassins per team, must find a way to destroy them... but the lag makes it difficult.

Ohohoho, that wont last. There are too many counters to count. They will be your biggest source of revenue until teams wise up.
Assault - Dash and flight
Gunner - Slam and flight
Sniper - Trap on a blind spot
Support - Should be sticking by a firebase anyway. Be ready to switch to shotgun.

Yeah assassins just get creamed most of the time. I like playing as one, but far to often you don't kill the guy, and just die.
If you do a custom class and you put armor in the silver slot, assassins can't one shot you unless it crits. Since you're still alive, and they have blown cloak, all you have to do is charge, shoot once, or melee in some way and they die. Charges and the shot gun are the quickest way to kill an assassin whose blown the kill.
I bought this on Steam and am loving the Beta so far. And I love playing an assassin, have been getting pretty good at it too. Makes me sad that apparently it won't last.

Im p sure in the xbox version only certain classes can survive a backstab with gold armor only. Front-stabs can be survived, but if you take anything other than a gunner or a tank with a lvl 3 sword, they're done for.

Totally, it's just been my experience that getting the holy backstab is pretty hard. Usually they see you coming and you have to make a choice:
Run, hoping they don't gun you down while you try to evac.
Go for the face stab and hope. I've managed to pull off the face stab kill pretty consistently.
The issue is that people can see you coming, and just waiting around to line up a backstab is kind of a waste of your talents.

I highly recommend never soloing with an assassin. It seems like the logical progression, since they are, well, assassins, but I've found your best bet is to buddy up with another group. If you've got a gunner or tank trying to take out a sniper, it's so much easier to backstab via sneaking up behind them while they are distracted.
In other news, the gunner with gold armor is awesome. People just don't see it coming. Once I hit delpoy 3 it's damn hard to take me down 1v1. And most 2v1 fights result in me getting 2 kills, then limping off to regen. Plus you can nullify their gunners in a straight fight.
I sucked with the gunner till I set this up. Armor, clip size, RoF. Its the holy grail.

I think that's my main gunner build. Seriously you mow people down with the chaingun and then you just have to go town on turrets with the mortar. I can easily take a whole side myself that way.

RE: Assassin backstabs: Upgrade to the 3rd passive skill as soon as possible. The dagger just doesn't have the power to it, the katana is far more effective in general, including slicing bots to ribbons.
If memory serves me right, a backstab with the katana can only be survived by a Tank with at least silver armour. And you should never approach a Tank as an Assassin anyway.
Also, don't forget that Assassins are key to taking down Jackbots - cloak and grapple them, you'll imobilise them while you're grappling and take a serious chunk of health out of their life bar.
EDIT: And don't forget the bomb jump - smoke bomb and jump right away, it was a key tool when I ran the class.

Not a bad setup, though without at least Silver armor you risk dying to backstabs from Assassins with swords.
At least Silver armor is necessary to survive that.
Now, you could play without Silver+ Armor and hope that Assassins steer clear, but I found at least on the 360 version a lot of Assassins are stupid and stubborn, and will actually repeatedly go after Tanks even with Silver+ armor, even if they just die repeatedly.
For comparison, what I usually run with is Armor and Reload to Gold and Silver (I keep swapping them back and forth because I can't quite decide which I like better), and Bronze Skill Recharge.
Though, I tend to avoid Speed endorsements because Speed can be augmented during play by picking up the speed powerups. (They last until you die, and each one you pick up raises your Speed endorsement level by 1. So if you have Bronze Speed, picking up a speed powerup will increase your Speed to Silver. If you have no Speed endorsement, picking one up will increase it to bronze, and so on)
Reload Speed and Skill Recharge are both excellent endorsements for Tank, whatever the case. Aside from Product Grenade being an excellent skill, they also have their Charge attack which, while not as good as the Assault's Shoryuken, still does hefty damage and knockback with the potential to ring out.
Just bought this tonight and quickly fell in love with it. I've yet to give every class their due, but I'm really enjoying Assault. Just a nice mix of abilities, and staying in the air seems to keep the assassins off me most of the time, and I like knowing a single charge can take out a handful of classes in one go.

It is worth noting that Assassins cannot grapple you if you are using your jetpack, even at ground level.
Steam is downloading an update and it is almost as big as the entire game. The download for installing the game was a little under 2 GB and now it's downloading 1,617MB. Either they changed just about everything in the game or they are doing their updates in a weird way.

Yeah the game is unfortunately killing my internet and I'm really not sure how to get around that, will scope out the steam forums and if not I'll try drop them an email.

Take the Tank. His abilities are exceptionally good for killing Assassins.
Edit: On the 360 at least, i'm not sure if the PC version has any large changes (I doubt it).
As Gunner, if you're finding lots of assassins, just start deploying more (same goes for tank). They can't grapple you while deployed, and you can very quickly drop out of deploy and slam/charge, killing them.
My biggest problem right now is Snipers. They don't even have to head shot me, they just kill me with regular shots before I can do jack shit.

Yeah its the same for me when I play tank, but I am thinking they are supposed to be my hard counter.

If you've got a gunner or tank trying to take out a sniper, it's so much easier to backstab via sneaking up behind them while they are distracted.
This is terrible advice. Your job as the assassin is to a) kill their bots until you have enough juice to b) wreck their base. These are both things you do by yourself while the rest of your team (which hopefully consists of non-assassin players as you only need one per team) is escorting your own bots, killing pros, building/overhealing/hacking/upgrading turrents etc.
As a good assassin, killing pro's is something you do in-between killing bots, juicing, and wrecking turrets.
A few other pointers:
1. As someone else said earlier, upgrade to katana as early as possible. Then get beind packs of enemy bots, charge into them and then finish them off. Then cloak and run away. You can trash entire groups of enemy bots and be invisible/half-way across the map to do the same thing to the second pack in five seconds. Always be killing bots. You should make alot of money doing this. Use that money to help your supports build/upgrade turrets. I think one of the reasons they made it harder for Supports to make money was to encourage other players to build turrets for the Supports to heal/hack etc.
2. Don't upgrade your speed boost until you have your katana and level 2/3 cloak. This is because your 'lunge' technique can get you all over the place at a very high rate of speed early in the game.
3. Don't grab Blackjacks if you don't have to -- it leaves you an easy target if an enemy pro comes along. That pro will kill you while you dance with the blackjack (this is also a drawback to lvl. 3 grapple on the Assault and the Sniper). Instead, hop up and down next to the blackjack and 'butterfly' it. Not only will you kill it quickly (if you have a katana -- remember, upgrade that katana before doing anything else except cloak lvl. 2 -- turrents can see through cloak lvl. 1) you'll also get almost an entire bar of juice from 'butterflying' as opposed to grappling.
If you're still curious about how to play the assassin, head over to the Uber Entertainment forums and read BoltAktion's compendium of Assassin advice. He's good.

This is true. Good assaults are also a royal pain to the Tanking game. Snipers shouldn't be able to kill you with body shots, though. You should have Armor as your Silver attribute so that you can't die to Assassin backstabs and one headshot i.e. you can survive every single-hit kill in the game. It takes 5-6 sniper body shots to kill a tank. If you're getting pegged and you're in the open, use your charge attack to quickly get to cover.
Not difficult. It's a third person shooter, team based, DoTA style.
Quite fun, except the newest patch kinda messed things up, I keep timing out, and the server list page is still really messed up (showing negative numbers).
I think they messed up the netcode trying to fix the server page, and instead just made more problems. Uber is probably scratching their collective chins saying "Now, this was not what was supposed to happen..."
