Alternative to hammering nails on walls? [SOLVED!]

Since my rental agreement does not allow using nails on walls, I need something I can use to hang paintings with.

Any ideas?

Do you have molding to hang things from?

What does molding look like? My walls are all flat, and newly painted.

I thought about that. I guess the challenge would be to make sure they aren't visible from the top of the frames that I will be hanging.

I think this might work, if I paste it on the wall upside down.

edit: esh, no I don't have anything like that.

You sure those won't peel paint and/or hold what you need?

    That only holds 1lb.

Yeah, peeling paint is a concern. And it does need to hold more than 1lb.

    Fuck.

There's a hardware store around the corner - maybe I'll pay them a visit tomorrow and ask what they have available for this. I can't be the only person who has this problem.

How big are the paintings? Are they framed or just matted?

Small paintings can probably be hung using the 3M hooks like Cauld said.

Possibly build a frame to display the paintings on? Don't know how handy you are at such things though.

If nothing else, it's fairly easy to get a bit of drywall mud and patch small nail holes. May be a bit tricky to match the exact paint color though so if you go that route be prepared to paint the whole wall.

They shouldn't peel paint, that's the whole point of them. They make different sizes that can hold different weights, but they're pretty strong. I use some to hang pans in my kitchen.

The Command Adhesives are very good at coming off without removing paint, as long as you're careful when removing them.

These might be closer to the trick.

That 3M shit has peeled the paint off everytime I've used it, and I always remove it exactly as the instructions say (by using some agent to loosen the glue, like nail polish remover etc) and still it always peels the paint off.

Run dental floss or guitar string behind them to get them off without removing paint. They might leave a bit of glue behind but i really doubt a landlord will complain. You can also generally use some nail polish remover to get them off without heavily damaging the paint.

3M makes really strong adhesive hooks to use on walls for exactly this purpose.

What? If you're using nail polish remover to remove 3M Command strips, you're doing it wrong.

Nail polish remover is going to strip your paint, or at least create some discoloration. Especially if the paint is oil based.

Yeah, that's messed up. "I used a lighter to heat it up, but now there's burns on my wall!"

You just pull straight down SLOWLY, and they'll come off.

The one I had last, I think was a 3M product, but could have also been a generic. I only used one hook before I moved out of that apartment, so I still had the package. When I went to remove it the directions said something close to "Pull down slowly" "If it doesn't come off, use a bit of rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover to loosen the glue"

So I put a little bit on a cotton ball and tried to dab the edge of the hook, then I slowly pulled down and a big chunk of paint came off the wall.

Now I just use nails, and don't really give a shit what the apartment owners think about it, because they are all shysters, and it doesn't matter if it's a hole in the wall, or something, they will do everything in their power to screw you out of your deposit anyway.
