Move on to Evendim / Trollshaws then... by 33-34 you kind of have to.
I'm 37. :P
I'm just pissed off at those early North Downs quests to the north-east of Trestlebridge. Some genius decided to put a level 28 quest right in an area with level 35 elites.
It CAN be, but the very best quests are enhanced through teamwork.
It's like wow; you don't have to group to level cap, but you diminish the experience by not grouping.
Hard to find a group? Has the population spiked any since it went free to play?
It's really easy to find group and yes, the population exploded when the game went f2p.
I usually find at least one person to group up with randomly just to duo quests in areas.
However, it should be noted that once you get out of the early zones (Ered Luin, Bree-Land, the Shire) and on to the places you must pay to play in, the active population drops dramatically. Early on in, say, the Lone Lands, you'll see a goodly number of people, but as you level through it and get closer to 30, you'll see maybe one person every ten minutes riding by and then they're gone. I did an entire quest hub last night in the southeast Lone Lands and saw nobody. Not a single person.
I don't know if the North Downs are different or not, though. I suspect they may have a bit more people since it's more of the natural geographical progression you get from quest breadcrumbs in Bree.

I got a quest sending me into Angmar, but it's still red. Not sure how to get into Ettenmoors. Should I just walk over to Trollshaws?
I am running out of quests -- have A brother's Plea, A pilgrimage to the Past, Techniques of the Masters, Hillmen of the North, and Orders from the Front. Not sure if those open up new hubs in North Downs or something.
You can only reach the Ettenmoors by taking a horse from a stable master. Do note that there are no brackets in the 'moors and everyone you will be fighting against will be lv65.

I hear you only need to pay for content from level 30 to 50 then you can cancel
I hear you only need to pay for content from level 30 to 50 then you can cancel
To get access to all the game's features you'll have to pay to unlock some stuff, but generally the areas between lv30 and 50 are where you'll have to either pay a subscription for a month or two or buy some quest packs. You can get lv50-60 on the cheap by finding a dusty old copy of Mines of Moria and 60-65 from buying Siege of Mirkwood (only available digitally).
So I managed to get my first piece of Helegrod armor today from the L65 set.
Looks like with full farming, you can get 3 pieces every 2 days. So you can have the whole set in 4 days.
It takes 2 Helegrod marks, which you can get 3 a day pretty easily from the different wing quests (you want to do the Drake Fang, Giant barter sticks, or Spider venom quests).
2,300 Skirmish marks, easy enough to get through any skirmish.
5 Superior 3rd Marks, which you can get from Library, School, the 3 Barrow Downs wings.
The only hard part is for the Thagur barrow down wing, you need to activate the boss fight, then run out to reset it, then zone out and back in, then the Hard Mode will work properly.
My wife and I have the original lotro hardcopy of the game. We played a bit back in the day, and kinda liked it, but got busy with other stuff and couldnt afford 30/month.
How much fun/good stuff are we going to get without having to pay 30 bucks a month for this? Is the game fairly playable, casually, for free/minimal cash moneys?
I hear you only need to pay for content from level 30 to 50 then you can cancel
The pattern I see in F2P players is:
- Trying the game with 2-3 classes/races, getting them to level 15-20.
- If they like the game, they usually get one or two characters to 28-32.
- Buying cheap copy of Mines of Moria (which are supposedly for 10$ on Amazon).
- adding the MoM to your account, which gives you levels 50-60 zones, AND 1 month VIP status. As a VIP, you can quest in all 30-50 zones.
- If you still like the game after 1 month of VIP, I think that you would need about 1-3 months of semi-regular play to get between 30 and 50. That would require 3-month subscription, for 30$, or 1 month subscriptions for 15$. This would allow you to discover and enjoy all the zones between 30-50, getting some class quests done etc. (Note, I think there are some people who can reach level cap in about a month. But we are talking about casual play here).
- After you get to 60, you are probably bored with the game. Which is a pity, because 60-65 zones are fun. If you like them, you would need to buy Mirkwood expansion, I think it is 30$ on Turbine store (not sure though).
So, here is how to try and enjoy LOTRO for cheap. Try it for free, maybe invest in MoM expansion for 10$ (if you can still find it on Amazon), maybe subscribe for 3 months for 30$, maybe keep subscribing and keep playing.
Note that with F2P you can theoretically grind Turbine Points in-game, buy content with TP's, and not pay any real money for a full game. But honestly, the TP's come so slowly that it is not worth your time.

Just realized I probably meant Evendim, not Ettenmoors.
But you can avoid all that stuff with content and points if you just pay the monthly fee right? I mean, I was paying it before, I don't really mind paying it again.
'Specially during the winter since there ain't anything to do outside.

Yeah, if you're a subscriber you pretty much get everything you did before. You just get points to spend on bonus items in the store now.
Odd. Somehow I have the map to Rivendell filled out, even though I ... don't think I've ever been there. Is there a fast travel option there that I might have used at one point or something?

Why do people have to be such assholes when it comes to quest spawns? I'm in Lone Lands right now and the same dickhead has failed this escort quest 3 times now, but wont group up for it and keeps snapping the guy up before I can start it myself.
Yeah, I'm considering it. I have to check with another IRL friend who followed me to Nimrondel once he could play on an account that wasn't mine (he has a few L65s on some other server).
Hate to have to level from 1-37 again though. Bleh.
Almost 45. How much of Vol 2 Book 1 do i need a group for?
Quite a few. About 6 or 8 quests. Most are full fellowship, but there are some 3-mans.
No, just book 1.
I don't think there are any group quests in book 1, but there are tons of group quests total in the volume 2 epic. In fact, 2.5.5 alone has THREE fellowship quests.
Alright, so I just resubbed to LOTRO after about a year and a half off. I had previously purchased MoM, and my highest character is 36 at the moment. Got a brand new PC that can roll this game on Ultra.
However, I find my interests and character direction quite different this time around. Is there a server that most folks here play on? I'm on the West Coast, and would prefer somewhere that I can mess with people who play on a similiar time frame. Current interests for characters are - Guardian, Minstrel, Champion, and Burglar. I'd be willing to play any of them that you all currently need.

I really hope they reduced the number of adds for the brothers fight in the Maze. Otherwise it is going to be a painful process teaching tanks not to use any force taunts so they dont wake up the second brother early, and teaching healers how to kite all the undead in between healing the tank.

The majority of the players in this thread play on Landroval, and the Debate & Discourse forum may have a guild still going on another server.
Since the F2P patch, there is almost always a minimum of 5 players in the kinship online.
End game, the most common classes people are looking for are tanks and healers (of course).
Cool. Thanks for the info. Saw the info about you all being on Landroval after I posted. Are there certain characters I should look for for a kin invite once I get past the Intro portion?
Has anything changed in the last year or so for legendary book traits (the ones you have to grind 39+ mobs for pages for?) Can I just kill tons of 39+ mans from a certain area and get all the pages, or should I move around? I got 5-6 pages in Misty Mountains yesterday (for my Champ, so those books).
Kinda sad that he's almost 60 and have yet to get these done

I've honestly never run into any problems with the brothers fight in the Maze. It's always that damn Caller's crawlers with their acid that covers the entire room that screw everything up.

I found out the Best buy near where I live had MoM game cards for sell. Turns out they were on clearance and weren't marked as such. Bought a 60 day game card for $15
And still no release date for the EU. =/ The official forums are practically flooding with people worrying Codemasters is going to shut down service. >_<

Each book requires you to collect 8 pages, and of the 8 pages, it is split into two groups of 4.
For the first 4 pages of any book, they are acquired in Misty Mountains / Ferochel
For the last 4 pages of any book, they are acquired in Angmar / Eregion
So for example if you are grinding all 3 books at once for your character, then you can get 12 pages in Misty Mountains, another 12 pages in Angmar, and be all done.
Also to note, the more pages you have collected, the longer the next page takes, since the chances that the theoretical page the mob drops is one you have already collected increases.

I actually lucked out on that once and my group let me tank them both dragging them from end to end of the room to keep everyone out of the acid.
The brothers is more difficult for me because either the healer is sitting there tanking adds while also pulling agro from healing the kiter / tank. Or as the tank I'm trying to pull them off the healer further increasing the damage I'm tanking and increasing the aggro the healer is pulling. I guess that fight really depends on having a competent kiting person.
