Creating your own giant-sized book? Need help with a wedding project!
Hey all. Anyone tried making their own books before?
So I am getting married next year and I have decided that I would like to have a giant guestbook for the guest to write stories in, sign or even draw pictures. My fiancée and I are planning to use the book after the wedding as a guestbook for our house, so that every person we have over leaves some kind of story or quote behind. I would like to make this book, as I know what I want and I think it would be fun and much more meaningful. I proposed to my fiancée by buying a journal and creating stories in it, so books and writing have a lot of meaning for us.
I am now trying to gather resources to figure out the best way to make this book. Has anyone done something like this? I know I want to create the covers out of wood, have a leather binding and thick, rough brown paper inside. I also want the book very large, like somewhere around two or three feet long. What is the best way to do the binding? Any tips or tricks?
This may be the more costly route, but my thoughts would be:
(1) find a paper you like. Like, browse online, look up paper supply companies (we found one in the town next over while looking for invitation-stuff). Also check out craft stores; scrapbook papers come in larger-than-usual sizes.
(2) find some one in town who does bindings, and probably not Staples. Unless you're okay with Staples. I don't know, I haven't used 'em. So ... ignore the Staples thing. Anyways, find somebody, check into (again) scrapbook places, custom book bindings, all that stuff. There's a good chance that they'll be happy to use the paper you get, though you may also have to get some kind of cover. It may be as simple as sturdy board wrapped in cloth, I don't know.
That's what I can think of. What we did, wanting a similar thing to you where it's not just a signature, it's something more personal, is get a few packages of origami paper. Nice colors, not the bright neon ones, but a variety of shades, and put them in a basket. Next to that was a basket of multicolored gel pens. Everyone gets a square, and one wedding later we have TONS of things ranging from family signatures to doodles to a few comics and stories. It's great. Eventually, we plan on putting it in a large scrapbook along with various wedding pictures, and also the cards we got.

If there's a university nearby ask some departments who they get to bind theirPh.D students' theses. I know a binder and a lot of his work comes from Ph.D people binding their thesis.
