I've been wrestling with Minecraft for a few weeks now, trying to get it to work on my desktop. I can play on my laptop, which has stemmed my rage, but I'd like to be able to play it on my comfortably positioned and much better equipped main machine. The support forums were less than helpful and while I found a few other threads with the same problem no solution was ever posted.
When I load a world, singleplayer or multiplayer, within a few seconds I see this:
Shortly afterwards, my screen flickers and I get the oh-so-enjoyable "display driver has stopped responding" error.
I've tried all the usual things, updating drivers, checking temperature, messing with gpu/java settings, etc.
I can run every other game on my desktop flawlessly. It's just Minecraft.
Has anyone else ever encountered this specific problem or know of a solution?

Have not encountered your problem it but Java is a enclosed virtual machine environment. Maybe your java machine is corrupted?

Everytime I see artifact tearing like that I always think its the GPU. You say everything else runs fine, what other programs do you usually run? What kind of video card is it? Looking at the pic you're either running Win7 or Vista, try turning off Aero affects and then run it.

I have a GTX 260. Every time I see tearing like that, I also think its the GPU, but the problem only happens with Minecraft, so I don't think it's hardware failure.
Earlier today I played Alien Swarm and Starcraft 2 on max settings without any problems.
I hadn't considered Aero before, but switching that off didn't change anything.
Seeing how easily hard work can be destroyed has put me off on this game.
Atleast until it enters beta perhaps, or motion detecting turrets are implemented.
I just discovered a tunnel that someone made, Pil's Tunnel.
It was built directly on top of my wooden ceiling. I made an effort to surround my home in stone but he ended up digging right on top of my living room.
I'm not saying that he sat my house on fire, we're suspecting someone went to my surface cabin and started it there. Just really weird.

I built my house out of wood, I was basically asking for it.
Thing is though, this server isn't supposed to be PVP. If it was I would have a stone house with a wooden interior and exterior, so that if it did go up in flames at least I would have the framework.
I dug my home into a cave and filled it in with wood. It's just time consuming.
In single player i built a nexus of tree houses, with sprouting paths to various mountains.
I think i'll set fire to it tonight, just to watch it burn.
5 months without video games has been killing me, but i cant play this game on my laptop
Damn the Underdark server sounds fun. Nearer the end of the year when I get my laptop and get back into Minecraft I would like to come join in if that's okay. I'm not really a builder though, so I'll probably just disappear for days at a time with a few pickaxes and collect materials for the community
Man, all of this vandalism is discouraging me from building my item shop. The Reds are one thing...but stuff like what happened to Nuka is just silly geesery.

Construction on my underground lake cavern has been going very well. The Goonies pirate ship is nearly complete. I still need to hollow it out and furnish all of the rooms and what not. I'm also trying to come up with a solution for making cannons that stick out the side other than simply having blocks of obsidian.
Sign says "Goonies never say die"
Ante room which I used as a workshop for most of the construction process, especially while digging out this massive cavern...
Railing before stairway leading down to the docks.
The stairway to the docks.
View from the docks
Climbing onto the ship
The captain's cabin. It has been redesigned to where the door is in the center and stairs surround it.
At the helm. Have no idea what to use for a wheel.
Looking up the mast. There is a crow's nest. I also dug a tunnel straight to the surface so you can theoretically reach the ship by finding the small hole and jumping down, landing on the crow's nest.
Nuka, not sure what that was and had thought about digging through the wood to see, but figured I should just leave it there. In hind sight, I should have built upwards. There were a few times where I dug into something else, and I just patched up the hole and moved my tunnel around. I'm sorry if that entrance posed an additional security risk

I'm not mad at you it's ok.
But yeah might help if you put in a stone floor just in case? I have a whole bunch of stone from that science building project of mine.
That is a generally good idea when building out of wood, if possible try to work in some stone walls in the design to limit the spread of fire. Because unless I install a server mod that disables it, fire will come.
My house is small enough though that I can quickly build it back up again. It's just a pain getting all that wood again. (thanks for the help though!)
Next house on the PvP server though will be much more fireproof, by that I mean I'll have stone inside all of the walls, even ones that divide up the room so I know where to build up again. I'll also amass a large stockpile of wood for myself too.

Do chests burn? I would surround them in stone just in case (preferably smooth stone to make it harder for people to find)

Could try an update and see what happens.
No luck.
I had the most recent version of Java, but just in case I uninstalled it completely, restarted my computer, then reinstalled.
Same problem.
Also, Ein you are a mad pimp.
Thanks.

Just finished a complete uninstall and reinstall of the latest drivers, 258.96. Still the same issue.

The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
Be gentle, I just wanna help build!
NO.
We will throw you down into the lava chute.
And then dunk you in the entrance river.
Then, we will show you how to build.
I'm half expecting it to be like SS13
Just kidding!
Mine are surrounded by obsidian.
They're fine.
They're better than fine.
They are fantastic.
It actually kinda is like SS13. It even has admins that show up and do awesome things!
Primary Suspect is holyground as he just left when I mentioned it.
Based on the fact that someone named "holyground" joined, said nothing at all, then left after we discovered the damage, I blame that guy.
I'm going to assume theres supposed to be a walk way from the dome to Hapetus (I can't spell it).
There is a lot of water every where

Rapture's in ruins. Going to need to roll it back.
Hope you guys can get it back to what it was with minimal effort.
