I'm confused. When I run the minecraft server and play on there, there aren't monsters at night, but when I play single player there are. Are those both "Survival" modes? Are there no monsters in multiplayer "survival"?

Also, when I'm playing multiplayer, I can't kill animals or take damage. That all normal too?

Multiplayer is being implemented currently. What you see what now is a "rough" version of multiplayer. Before, it was even rougher. The way he does things with Single Player is a bit different when you need to account for multiple people who could all potentially pick up that dropped block, say, or all have items and all want to place a block in a certain spot, for instance. He's still working out the kinks.

ok, who do I Pm for an invite to the Steam group? I never took down the IPs like a dope!

My project in Underdark must be completed or we'll all feel the wrath of the Under Gods!

Yeah better keep the server IP's hidden.

I have a feeling this comic is going to bring the population seeking a PA server to an all-time-high, however unfunny the actual comic may be.

We had nearly 20 people on Underdark last night. If the IP was open, the server would die, period. It would crash, and crash hard.

When monsters are implimented, I think we'll see a change in how player homes are built - They will be more defense-oriented, and probably up in the air via ladders more often.

Defense is still pretty much a joke in this game. The only change we'll see is the entire landscape dotted with torches, and buildings just covered with them.

The stuff about removing the IPs: don't we need to edit all the posts in the thread to remove IP references, too? There are a bunch of people who asked "What's the IP?" before it hit the OP, especially in the SE++ thread, and a lot of people straight up posted the IP individually.

I had a short chat with gumpy about that too, and we agreed that some town planning is probably going to be in order.

The current thought is that for the next Underdark the majority of Undercore is going to be off limits to buildings. It will be reserved for the forest with only a few public buildings in the middle of the parklands (like the storehouse, town hall, maybe a temple). Building will be allowed along the outer walls of the cave, perhaps giving a designated lot to each player (as long as space allows). These rules will of course not apply to all of Underdark, there will be plenty of huge and impressive caves where people can build entirely freely including the planned truly gargantuan Überdark (trademark). It was just felt that the main cave can too easily be cluttered (the current undercore is suffering rather badly from this) and it seems reasonably to spread out the buildings and projects a bit more to reduce lag.

Edit: I doubt we need to be that paranoid Argus. If anyone was desperate enough to look through the entire threads there are several easier ways for them to get the IP. This is not about making the IP entirely hidden anyway, we just want it to be less accessible to keep the inflow of players at a reasonable level.

I think the fear is that with new players there will be new griefers and more lag on the servers. Both are likely to be true but there is no point getting too paranoid. Besides, we have not truly made the IP's private, they are just a little harder for the casual browser to find.

I'll catch up later but I just wanted to say: I did not attack rapture. I logged off because I couldn't figure out how to get anywhere. I saw a tree on fire but couldn't figure out how to get there to put it out. I died twice trying to figure out the pathways.

I'm sorry about your fire in rapture. I'm pretty new to smps. I switched from your server to the underdark to help over there.

Yeah, there are thousands of servers for people to play on.

First they have to pull the trigger on buying a game. After they get that far, they have to choose a server. If they know there are some PA ones, they'll look into it... or enjoy it and make their own.

We have 2-3 PA servers right now, maybe 10-20 people on at a time, on a busy day. More servers will spring up, some will overtake Underdark/Rapture in popularity... it's just going to happen.

My biggest concern is stability. I don't want to have to stop playing on Underdark because 30 newbies show up tonight, making it unplayable. There are a lot of really neat things going on in that server, and those of us that have put the most time into it should be able to enjoy it.

I know I keep bringing this up, but this comic is going to put extra stress on it - We really need to consider removing interaction permissions for brand new players. With population comes more anonymity, and if we follow Gabe's Greater Internet Dickwad Theory, we're going to see more griefing. So far, at least once per day for the past week, something preventable has happened due to someone's dickishness.

Places like Underdark and Rapture are amazing feats in creativity and time. The amount of time invested in these creations is what's important here, and I don't know about you guys, but I value my time. Yes, I know it's just a game. I know it's only in Alpha and it will all be lost eventually. God knows those hours/days/months of time spent in past MMO's hasn't really net me anything today.

I enjoy Underdark. I greatly appreciate Vic for hosting it for us, and I like the idea of this being a private, small group of people playing it. I don't want Rapture/Underdark to be considered "Official PA servers" by any means. If PA wants that, they can do that. Maybe someone will invest in a server and call it "Official", that's fine. With that, comes responsibility and administration. Obviously what we have right now is very lax and enjoyable

So after lots of experimenting with my first world, I've started a new one and my goal, before any spelunking, was to set up a decent home base. It's nothing insane, but I'm proud of it. It will serve as a good workshop to plan grand constructions from.

I've built it into a decent sized hill to give me room to expand, there's a spiral staircase running down the middle that connects to a cave at the bottom.

So I've been lurking this thread off and on a while. These crazy things I keep seeing....people play with cheats? RIGHT?
I played a pretty long amount of time and I've got a very, very modest dwelling built, and I don't even have any fancy tools made because I've yet to see the right minerals. The hardest part is making things to climb so I can make taller structures. I'm going to assume people are using noclip and jive, yes? =)

    They usually use editors, yes.

Though I only use mine for large scale landscaping. It's not fun digging up over 100000 blocks worth of dirt and stone to build your self a natural lake moat around your mountain fortress. And then having to fill that moat with water.

I've been playing on the Underdark and the Zetx server for the past few days as ccuddigan, mostly wandering around and helping out with what I can before I start building anything of my own. Logged into Rapture yesterday into a flooding dome, what happened sucked but being part of the repair effort was certainly interesting.

Anyone have any info on what's running these servers? From what I gather they're running on personal desktop boxes.

So having watched from afar for a while I ended up buying this. I went in raw.

My first night ended with me being killed by a spider.

My next first night ended up with me being chased all over the island.

At that point I'd through trial and error worked my way up to making picks and found some coal.

I have now carved out a niche of my own in the mountain and are creating a home. 3 nights and going strong.

The point where I decided I was going to get addicted was when it clicked that I should try putting sand in my oven and I got glass.

I've been playing the single player a bit over the last week, loads of fun. I think the game was taunting me when after creating several worlds in which I could find no coal, it put the closest coal deposit up in the middle of a sheer cliff. Like a smiley face.

Anyways, kind of curious, how big are the maps? Like is there a limit or does it just generate it on and on if I keep walking? I kind of want to do a perpetual dig. Mine council if you will.

As one of these aformentioned newbies, I'm going to chime in:

i'm totaly cool with not having the ability to modify things. When I come to your server, I'm a tourist. At most I just want to help, like with Nuka and the Science center.

As long as you guys keep posting pictures and stuff of all the great things you're doing over on those servers, then that's cool, too. It sucks when you get into something after a group has already been created about it: you just feel left out.

I logged into rapture twice yesterday. I couldn't get the hang of boats so by the time I got to the main entrance, it didn't make any sense to me because I kept going under water. I tried to get to where there was fire, but I died. I didn't say anything because I didn't know how to talk on the MP server. I looked it up for when I switched to underdark.

If you want to ban me, though, I totally get that. I probably won't ask for the ips for the PA servers because I just lag them down.
