I made this blueprint a while ago but I figured I'll share it with newcomers in case anyone wants to take it up. It was a bit much for me.
A maze in which you are forced to visit four corner towers before reaching the grand tower in the middle:
I would last about 5 minutes and then I'd start pickaxe-ing my way to the middle tower. :P
Well yeah.
You could also make it a height of one to let people who want to solve the maze still walk it, and let annoyed people hop over it but it'd still be an impressive sight from the top of the towers.
That's awesome. I was considering making a glass maze near the roof my cave and I may steal this as a template. I figured glass would be awesome 'cause it would be like those funhouse mazes where you get disoriented so easily.
edit: Put holes in the floor at the dead ends. Brilliant! I need to get my single player onto a multiplayer server if I get this done.
I got lucky with this world. I quickly found some coal viewable below a sheer cliff. This will be useful when searching for more coal so I can stockpile it. I also need stone for my monastery on a cliff with a nice view of some waterfalls. Is it best to just dig down extremely far using ladders to get up and down before doing heavy mining?
So creepers, per the wiki, detonate in a 4x4x4 cube (rounded off to be spherical.) So if I wanted to build a creeper-proof glass hut I'd need to make the walls four layers thick, so I could never be inside the blast radius of a creeper standing right at the outer wall. Right?
Edit: Arthil, maybe try the java applets for animated weather at radar.weather.gov and see if they do the same thing? Then you'll know if the problem is Minecraft or your Java installation. I don't know.

To prevent people from cheating you make it underground where the walls are made of lava waterfalls. If that's even doable. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm manipulating the flow of liquids yet.
creepers will only detonate if they're within 1 block of you.
Try re-installing Java to deal with the black screen.
Within one block? I know I've fought creepers and had them detonate, and I never let them get THAT close. The wiki says, in Alpha (current), they start their fuse (and begin making that hissing sound) when the player is within the blast radius, which is a 4x4x4 sphere.

Wouldn't that only be 2 or 3 units thick? If a creeper is at the center of the explosion that's 2 units in front of him and 2 units behind.
You would make it 3 units so they can break off the 2 outer ones and still be left with a solid wall.
However I don't think more than 2 is necessary, since I don't think creepers will trigger unless it's just 1 deep and you're right next to the wall.
"I am talk. And I hit bedrock. I have now included a rather large network of caverns into my mine network. It starts off from the mountain i spawned on, and continues down into the mountain, across the frozen river valley. I honestly have no idea how deep it all goes, though i have found impassable bedrock many times now.
The caves are now well lit, and free of danger. It took a long time, but i cleared it all out. No treasure to speak of, but plenty of materials. I have worked my way into crafting with diamond.
Im thinking that with the multitude of chests that i have filled with stone, i should build something. Perhaps a monument.
I retruned to my Calvary home to build a massive cross. For I have been reborn to save this world.
Perhaps the isolation has gone to my head, but i now feel that there is no god. Only me. This world is my dream. This world is my creation. I will shape it as i see fit.
Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I think it is worth repeating. Last night I downloaded Skylands: http://skylands.goonygoon.com/ Is is a premade adventure-ish world with treasures, dungeons and multiple spawnpoints.
I've been playing standard single player survival all week and it was becoming too easy. I had my lands, I had a large stock ore and tools and I was getting bored.
Skylands gave me more goals than just building and exploring. I picked one of the dungeons on his map and made it my mission to get there. The world is made of islands floating in space, so travel was difficult. I often had to craft my own very long bridges to get from place to place. Since there is less solid land than the standard map, materials are limited. Losing your iron ore can be a giant setback. Since reaching the fun areas involves significant traveling, setting up smaller safe areas is always required. Also because of those distances, the strategy of managing what supplies you haul between the areas becomes an added layer of fun. (Should I take all of my Iron bars to my new base? What if I get ambushed on the way? etc)
I can't speak highly enough of it. I am already planning out on the map how I can get to a desert area with several pyramids. It will probably be at least a 2 game days walk, so I will need a few houses!
As soon as smelting and damage is fixed in multiplayer, I am going to throw this up on a server and run through it with some friends.
Also, I died from lava in a bucket. Does it break through or something?
Did you try opening a chest or furnace with it? Both bucket of water and lava will 'place' if you do that (which is why you never ever leave them in your active slots ;-)).
Ugh, I think I have figured out the problem I have been having in my small attempts to create the second underdark. Apparently lighting effects are saved on the map rather than generated continuously, so when I created a 800x800x? stone block above the surface in which the game still expects there to be sunlight it bugs the hell out. I do not yet know if this will be fixeable at all, I can only hope.

So what's a good map editor? I want to try out a TNT experiment...
Well, I played a while last night, discovered another set of caves via my 25x25 quarry. These caves didn't seem like much at first but as I was taking out a wall of coal, I broke into a deep shaft. When I got down there, that area went on for quite a ways in one direction, and in the other direction was *another* deep shaft. *That* area had lots of lava pools and finally diamonds. I came back with a diamond pickaxe and diamond shovel and proceeded to start destroying some of the dirt/gravel areas, found some more diamond and eventually some other smaller areas. I ended up with about 13 diamonds total I think, because I also made a diamond sword from the first 6.
I've been getting a bit bored with continuing my quarry, as I still have a *lot* of layers to go, I'm only halfway down if that. I only strip out a couple layers a time, last night I spent most of the time exploring the gigantic cave system. I have something like three double chests full of cobblestone, one double chest full of dirt and another double chest about a third full of buckets of lava. I *could* produce more buckets, because at this point I have three or four stacks of iron ingots, but still... it would probably be better if I could figure out a project involving lava to do, and just use this set of buckets when I go collect more.
Oh, redstone ore is also stupidly abundant in this map, I have something like five or six hundred redstone at this point. I *almost* stopped actually mining it because I'm sick of the stuff.
You know, I really wish iron was easier to find. I mean, I've been playing for 3 days and accumulated approximately 100 iron ore. Given how much it's used for, I'd rather strike iron than gold or diamond at this point. I want to create a rail system, but it takes 6 iron to make 16 track units!
I finally downloaded a map viewer to slice through my world and see if there were any big veins I could hit to build up a warchest, and the largest I found was 5 blocks, surrounded by huge tracts of stone. I think I like building more than adventuring or deep mining, but I don't want to play without enemies and lighting (which I thought I read weren't available in creative mode).
Do I just have a low-iron map? Is there some sort of audio cue when you're near minerals (I just got sound working last night and didn't do much mining) or something?

So I made a new world last night and found an early coal deposit, made myself a nice little beachside hut and decided to go for a walk. I discovered something staggeringly beautiful. I don't even want to fuck with it. I haven't even walked down to it yet.
I need to back up this save before I do anything I think.
get into my home, alt tab til daytime, turn around - see this.
anyone know if it is possible for a creeper to be set off if you are standing directly up against the wall, and there is only one block between you and them?

That's amazing. I started my first world last night and I ran into something similar. I just assumed I was going to get some lumpy hills and got some natural arches instead. I'll have to take some screenshots when I get home.

From stories I've read on here: definitely yes.
We're still establishing how much distance you need. After you kill that creeper and refill the crater he leaves, you might consider either making thicker glass walls (2x or 3x blocks thick) or putting fencing around the outside of your house that keeps things 2 or 3 blocks back.

I can't wait until there are more legitimate threats and they're integrated into multiplayer.
Stuff that can dig through your walls, forcing you to constantly repair and upgrade your structures. Maybe dangerous environmental phenomena that can cause damage. Enemies remembering where you are and gathering in larger numbers every night unless you kill or disperse them somehow.
One man's great idea is a nightmare for another. I don't want to die deep underground and find out that my base camp near the spawn points has been taken over/demolished by goblins.
But it seems like Notch is pretty good about making things options instead of standard features. I do like the idea of joining a server and fighting the good fight with other PAers against a zombie/creeper apocalypse, so long as I can create my own server where I can play a multiplayer version of the game with less aggressive monsters.

I think that'd be a difficult but interesting problem: automated scenario design that applies to any arbitrary arrangement of blocks.
Keep in mind too that the Internet is pretty smart, and any cheap design shortcuts will be discovered and people will avoid them. So you can't rely on, say, bounded regions that contain furnishings (treasure chest, workbench, furnace), or the high-traffic areas on a heatmap of player movement. You'll just inspire player behaviors like "keep your furnishings outside your actual house", "keep three or four houses and rotate between them", "if you discover an area and want to keep it ambush free for when you return, dig up and replace the blocks behind you to cover your tracks." And people will perceive the game as annoying to play, because of this extra stuff you "have to do".

I've never had a Creeper kill me through a 1 block wall and those guys bounce outside my windows all day.
Wait, maybe it was a creeper exploding through a doorway instead of a glass wall. And the door was put on backwards. (Always attach doors from the outside.)
Sorry. X__X
