I would like to state for the record right now, as I do every time that character comes up, that my name has nothing to do with MGS2, which I disliked.
Oh what the fucking fuck. Did we learn nothing from Metal Gear Solid 2? We do not want some emo looking, half starved, glitterpyre inspired version of Dante.
You do not need to "Reimagine" Dante. We do not need a reboot of Dante. What we want is Dante, being a wise cracking badass.
I mean fuck Capcom, whats next, having Mega Man take Rush out behind the chemical shed and put two in his CPU?

Well, I think the problem here is that with the data they've publicly released (Name of developer, trailer, Title, etc.), while there isn't a lot of it at this time, it has the feel that they are making the game from a Counter-Culture standpoint for no other reason than to make it from a Counter-Culture standpoint.
Plus, they're fucking with Dante. You can't do that, cause then you're muckin' wit a G, to use an old 90's reference.
if they just try to ape Kamiya's style then they'll fucking embarrass themselves because the reason Kamiya is famous is no one can do what Kamiya does as well as Kamiya
KAMIYA
Hideki Kamiya directed DMC1 and hasn't touched the franchise since. Aside from the atrocity that is 2, the series has gotten along just fine without him. It's worth noting that the same guy who directed DMC2 also directed 3 and 4 (Hideaki Itsuno).
I'm totally willing to accept the possibility that Ninja Theory may be unable to handle the combat, and this may suck - I just can't believe no one else thinks it's just as possible that it won't.

There's always the possibility that someone will be blessed by the combo fairies and pull something wicked awesome entirely out of their ass. There is no precedent for this.

Still better than what Konami has done.
Konami just published that. It was Hudson that didn't know any better.
I guess I'm in the minority of people who don't mind the new look.
Really, it isn't the look explicitly that I like, it's just the idea of expanding the character in a different direction. The biggest thing I liked about DMC3 was that we got to see a younger Dante who had significantly different mannerisms than his older version. I just like the idea that Dante was not always the one we know - that the character evolved over time.
Really, more than just the look, what worries me about this game is the fact that there's a possibility this younger Dante won't fit in the same kind of character progression arc that the other iterations have, and instead will just be a re-imagining. That would suck.
What would also suck, is if Ninja Theory doesn't make a good DMC game. That's probably my biggest concern, far ahead of any character changes they might make.

For this arduous task, Capcom will rely on its U.S. branch, with producer Alex Jones at the reins. He will be assisted by director Tameem Antoniades of Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword) and co-director Hideaki Itsuno.
It’s an all-star cast, and Itsuno even went as far to say “there’s no way a group like us could possibly fail.”
I think that it is not so much that I hate the style, as it is that I don't really wanna play a character that looks so normal. I don't hate people who wear clothes like that or anything of the sort. I don't want to look like Dante from the previous games either, but there's something about his style that gives you a sense of outlandishness. He's a super sized person and it really makes you feel like the world revolves around him and that cool things could happen at any point. This guy...I mean he just seems so normal. I don't get the same feeling that there is an adventure waiting in every level.
From what I've seen of his personality, I don't like him as a character at all. In fact there's something about his character that kind of repulses me. That's not really got anything to do with his look, it's to do with his...feel. He's so goddam serious.
But the enemy designs seem pretty cool and I like the idea of tossing cars about. There's some elements of the world I find interesting, like the city scene at the start.
I also quite like the scene in the trailer where he was chilling with the cigarrete on the statue for example. He looked like a relaxing cat.
Basically, if he stops looking so normal and he cheers up a bit, I'll probably not mind him too much. I'll have wait and see.

Maybe Dante's character design was somewhat cliche-ridden to begin with, but I don't understand why you'd mess with an iconic character so drastically. Change the tone of the game, change the gameplay dynamics, etc., but I'm not sure why you'd mess with a recognizable character in that way.
It'll be really strange when MvC3 comes out with "old" Dante and then this comes out with "new" Dante.
I actually liked this. Like someone said earlier, as long as they tie this in to the series and this is just how he was as a kid I see nothing so bad with this. Its just how he looked. I like to see that he wasnt always this white haired ass kicker but a human looking street thug possibly? I dont know. But i like to see this because its kind of like story stuff.

I think the question is would people complain if the hair was the right color.
The redesign is interesting in that I could see the "new Dante" transforming into DMC3 dante over the coarse of the game.
Dante lite > Super Dante
Puts me in the mind of Dragonball Z and a bunch of other anime that feature powerups or trueforms for characters.
I'm probably being optimistic.

That dude turning into normal Dante would require him grafting Dante's face over his regular NotDante face.
The only thing I can think of to make this interesting is if that's some other dude. Like it's Nero's kid and he named him Dante or something. And he's completely messed up because some shit went down with something or something. Nanomachines.

It is really not that big a jump when you consider how someone can change from teenager to adult. Dyejob and a bulk up and you have DM3 dante.

Also equally possible, hell it could be Dante's own son for all we know. Dante's own evil clone son.

I'm pretty sure Dante has always had white hair. It's in the anime specifically in an episode devoted to explaining how shitty his childhood was. Also he was 17 in 3 not a lot of time to grow from a crack addict into well Dante.
Also I'm super pissed that he smokes. It like they needed to make sure he was super cool so they added the old stand by smoking.
I bet at some point he's under an archway smoking in the rain feeling ways about stuff

Sparda had white hair ergo Dante and Virgil's hair must be genetic. Honestly if this Dante had white hair he would look a lot better.

I thought that too.
I didn't mention it though. I was busy wondering if it would actually make a big difference or if I'm just being a tard because I'm attached to white hair on Dante.
I haven't worked that one out yet.

Well maybe he was trying to be rebellious cause he hated his father and all demons so he dyed it. You never know. We know next to nothing about this game and people are just absolutely bashing it.

All I can think when I look at the new protagonist is that they're trying to get money from the Twilight crowd with this game. The guy is a skinny, goth, lazy looking dweeb just like Edward Cullen or whatever.

That sounds like something the ironic emo Brit lamer Mary-Sue "but I'm actually Dante! Seriously! I'm not a bad fanfiction spawn" would do.
The real Dante never got so immensely and childishly butthurt about things that he would dye his hair over it. He would instead kick the shit out of the offending element in the most outlandishly stylish way possible, or at least make a dumb, light-hearted joke.

So do I, but at least Raiden was a seperate character from Snake with a different personality.
This is Snake reimagined as Raiden. That's twice as bad.

Somebody said earlier he might turn from regular dante to Super badass Dante.
This might not be as bad as everyone is assuming its going to be.
I'm so tempted to call this one "Dante made Crap" from now on.
That's basically what 3 covered, so I guess this is just a total reboot.
