I'm not very good at these sorts of games(motor disgraphia means I'll never have the mad skillz because my hands don't work right). That said, I own all the DMC games and Bayonetta because I enjoy playing them.
And really, 17 missions in, the new DMC is quite good. I really love the level design, and the combat system is just easier for me somehow. I don't think it's as good as DMC 3 or Bayonetta, but it's waaaay better than, say, DMC 2.
Almost tempted to buy the game now I have learned the unlockable difficulties are a good step up and they are releasing a bloody palace mode.
Also to spite the people complaining about this game. It's not like they took the game and turned it into a fucking FPS or something.
I'm looking at you, Syndicate
But syndicate was awesome
It also sold less than 200,000 copies.
I am probably picking this game up at the end of the month to at least add my +1 to stave off the same fate. But I have a bad feeling it's not doing very well. While it isn't exactly what I wanted, it will be worth it for some of the amazing level design later on alone.
I really like the aesthetic design of the levels. And just to confirm, yeah, the unlockable difficulties are quite a bit more intense. I'm not speaking as a DMC badass or anything, but I've played all of them (meaning 1,3,4, and this one).

Just need to beat Hell and Hell mode (which I will cheese with the Super Dante perk) for the full 1000/1000 cheevos. I've sunk a shit load of time into DmC and am pretty comfortable with my flat out love for it. I'll buy any piece of DLC Ninja Theory throws my way to keep the dream of a sequel alive. It's tied with DMC3 for my favorite in the series right now; and the Bloody Palace DLC may push it over the top.

its interesting how the parry system in this ended up being similar to revengeances
its interesting how the parry system in this ended up being similar to revengeances
push a direction + attack when they attack
Do you happen to have the various parries down cold? I never appreciated how the various parries in this game get one tutorial screen and are never seen again because they're not in your moves list.
Bringing this up reminds me that my ability to fight the various flying demons and the one dual wielding baddie is gimped because when I pull these moves off it's an accident.

yeah i spent a bit of time learning all the parries
the dreamrunners in particular are trivialised by parrying their dreamwalk
if you want a shortcut you can just prop parry 99% of projectiles trivially
so if you see a frost knight charging up his frost thing you just start spamming prop
same with witch spears, little flying gimps throwing grenades or firing crossbow, etc
every single attack the final boss has is parryable, to hilarious effect
parrying is also how you cancel devil triggered enemies - if you parry them it will drop their trigger and interrupt them
you can parry a devil type enemy with an angel weapon too, which is worth knowing. the double fights can actually be done using your weapon both as a shield and as an attack but it is really trick and much harder than simply abusing the camera

I wasn't even sure about parrying myself. It was usually that thing I did accidentally.

if you play the game as though overdrive, aquila, arbiter dont exist you find a lot of cool things the combat designer put in that are totally overshadowed by how strong some cheesy things are
like for example ricoshot. it stuns tyrants. i stunned 3 tyrants at once with a single ricoshot, and it can drop them out of enrage. very useful, but most people didnt bother with it.
the downside to parries is that because it is when your weapon deals damage osiris has a different parry time to rebellion, for example. this means you have to learn it for each weap, which can be aggravating. but the charge on eryx is very easy to do it with because you can just charge your attacks until you see a parry window then attack, charge the next part of the combo, repeat. and eryx parries break normally unparryable movez
Just finished my run-through and I have to say that I enjoyed the game for the most part.
There were a few things that I didn't like - namely the weapon-type specific enemies and the lack of a lock-on. The bosses were kind of disappointing too, with the exception of the Mission 20 boss, which I enjoyed.
Other than those niggles, it's been a solid and very enjoyable game and if Capcom chooses to run with it, I'll be there for the sequel.

They are unlikely to with these sales numbers. They only did it in the first place to try and get the super sales numbers of other games.
I think this is going to teach them that this series will never achieve those numbers. And I have this sinking feeling that they are much more likely to can the series rather than try to go back to its roots or make Ninja Theory sequel etc.
Worse than DMC4? They are not going to be happy with this. They are going to be very unhappy. Lots of grim faces on lots of suits at Capcom right now I'll bet.

They were absolutely hoping for more. That was the stated reason behind this reboot in the first place. It was the only reason they did it at all. They looked at the sales numbers of GoW and whatnot and thought "I want some of that pie." They thought "We can't seem to make a smash hit over in the Western market that lets all those other companies roll around in money despite this game being the same kind of deal, so lets give it to a western action game developer that can follow that same formula."
That's why the epic environments (GoW) that's why the easy to pick up nothing to master combat full of aesthetically pleasing gosh and wow (GoW). That's why everything.
They're not going to be happy with those numbers. Not even a little bit.
I hope for the sake of the series that it's sales pick up a bit.

Which is a shame, because Ninja Theory made a good game that got me more interested in a Devil May Cry sequel, than I've ever been.
I think the real test is gonna be MGR:R sales. I believe (on brand name alone) that it will outsell DmC. If it doesn't...might as well declare the genre a niche at best and knowing Capcom they will bury it with Onimusha since it can't do omgCOD sales numbers.

The Metal Gear series regurally pulls 5-6 million so I would say it isn't very niche.

Doesn't really matter though from a consumerist point of view.
Thing is console Metal Gears regularly sell 5+ million. So that means you already have 5 million people with their eyes on your brand. Even if they aren't interested in the final product, that means you have a much wider net to work from a much higher potential to make money off of said product.
And yes, you might have Metal Gear fans who are put off of the game because of its genre trappings, but you also will have many who will buy it as long as its Metal Gear, and then action fans who will buy it because its made by Platinum, not to mention fans who have wanted to play as Raiden since MGS4. Then if the game is well received, you have a much higher chance of people spreading the word.
Compare that to DMC which has always usually done around 1 million and only hit 2 million when it went multi-plat on the PS3/360, that's niche.
So could you say that Rising might not do as well as MGS4, that's a decent assumption to make. But it has far greater legs than the DMC series has and will do much better by that alone.

Considering it sold 1.35 million within the first two months you may want to add a zero or three onto that little number you have there UV old chap.
Obviously I was exaggerating but the point is those are piss-poor numbers
For a two-console game released in all regions, 1.35 million is abysmal

We should probably stay on this games sales now, all things considering.

awesome quote. Sadly, in this day and age of COD sales, I don't think games like DmC stand a chance. Ironically, it's a great year for action...uh...brawler thingies I guess. You got GoW:A, MGRR, Bayo 2 and LoS2 all in one year!

Honestly, I don't know why they would bother chasing those GoW numbers.
I think GoW was just a right place, right time deal because I honestly don't understand the appeal of playing an average action game with really nice setting and a protagonist whose angry all the time.

The God of War series has some really breathtaking setpieces and on the whole, terrific level design. That's what kept me coming back really. I was going to pass on Ascension, saw IGNs first 30 minutes video, and now I'm buying it.

To me it is the very best mode
There is nothing more satisfying than a bunch of dudes spawning, and taking them all down in less than three seconds with Ebony and Ivory
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.

also i kind of disagree with this.
if you are somebody fresh to the dmc series there is lots of stuff to master in here... if you want to
the combat system has lots of depth, but it has internal balance problems that prevent that depth being relevant
but there is LOTS of room for mastery in the combat
uh oh spaghetti-os
