I played the first 3 back when I was a kid and hated them. A lot. Then I bought DMC4 when it came out and liked the combat but thought everything else was pretty trashy.
So I really can't say I have the best memory of the series. :P But I know I didn't really like him as a character when I played it because I would have remembered something good about the series if that were the case.
The old Dante was cocky, without the juvenile cursing and giving demons the finger and etc.
But that's really only true of his incarnations in DMC3 and 4, where he seems to be genuinely enjoying himself and everything was over the top and silly. In 1 it was pretty serious and the characterization was pretty minimal.
I mean, it's not like any of the games have deep, riveting stories that compel us to introspection and analysis or anything. It's more a matter of superficial tone.
The gameplay is more important, and I enjoyed it in 3, 4 and this one.

DmC is the played straight Evil Dead remake to DMC's unintentionally hilarious Evil Dead through to DMC3 and DMC4's intentionally over the top hilarious Army Of Darkness.
And in that regard, it's characters and tone are handled waaaaay better than DMC's.

I totally agree with this! Spot on.

.....I couldn't disagree with this more!
Unless you mean that DMC3 and DMC4 had character that were handled better, and not that DmCs characters were handled better.

Cannot agree with this more.
In fact, the only place this isn't a perfect comparison, is that I liked the Remake Evil Dead's ending more than DmC.

I mean DmC is better than DMC, not DMC3/4. Ya might not like what it does, but it's much more consistent and better executed than DMC, imo.
DMC3/4 are pretty far removed from the original game anyway, don't think it's a fair comparison.
Also while we're talking comparisons! Drives me nuts when I see people ablooing about percieved character inconsistencies from the old series to DmC; mainly Vergil. Can't count the number of times I've seen "Vergil would never do x" - no shit, it's a different character, who is totally consistent in the new context. :I
ed; Assuming they were playing on expectations from those old characters, I loved seeing Vergil do some stuff that DMC Vergil never would've, like
Firing a gun at an unarmed pregnant woman in the back. That's like, 3 different kinds of nope.
Also the occasional bro talk between em is good. Even the final mission is less I NEED MORE POWAH and more "humans are babbys and need to be ruled" - it's still powah, but there's at least some kinda logical motivation there
DMC1 had my favorite one liners, but the characterization was paper thin. But it worked for what it was.
DmC Dante is juvenile as hell, but it was still pretty endearing to me and over the top enough, that I laughed.
The game seemed pretty self aware of how juvenile the overuse of swear words are.

For the most part, I really prefer to play the first one over any of the others.
I mean, DMC3 is just more and better, and that's well and good. I guess it's just that it's a bit more of a ball buster. I kind of prefer the simplicity and atmosphere of the first one. It's the only one that used recurring bosses to great effect. For the most part.
I just built a new pc, and was playing DmC in 1080p / 60fps. Much nicer that way! It's a really fun game. I can tolerate the new story, but there is very little of it I love. Well presented though it is. My real beef with the game is the color coded enemies. Fun vampires. Eek. I had totally forgotten about them. Otherwise, fun game.
How important are the angel/demon dodging in later levels? I have regular dodging down, but I can't seem to get the other ones to work but once in a while.
I love everything about the trappings in the new DmC
The gameplay is great, but what really makes it for me are the cutscenes, the animation, the dialogue and voice acting
Just goddamn, I want more games like this
Even if it's not associated with this series
For the most part I loved it to. Just some of the dialogue grated on me, mostly everything from Mundus and that scene that Dark Raven X has spoilered. That didn't sit well with me at all.

Angel Dodge is never really useful at all imo - it puts a bit of extra space between you and them, but there's very little utility for it. Demon Dodge is fantastically gamebreakingly awesome if you master it, as you can use it to charge up the Arbiter's Trinity Smash to insta kill most low level mooks, and knock you straight up to SSS otherwise. I wouldn't say either are necessary per se - you definitely wanna prioritize unlocking all the moves for weapons, especially Rebellion, Arbiter and Aquila over either of the dodges imo.
So people don't like the cursing in the game? Or is it that "Fuck you, no fuck you" scene? I don't see how that's anymore quote unquote juvenile than the shit in the last couple of games. He's just more "juvenile" (because it's cool not curse these days?) with his words than his actions. I'd consider fighting dudes with pizza and missile bullshit just as juvenile, just, you know, more anime juvenile.
But, whatever. DmC was cool as hell and I'll be sad if we don't get a sequel.

I would be shocked if Capcom made a sequel as they said they were moving towards internal development on future projects.
So I quite liked the game so far... Then I got to the Raptor News tower then the dance club......... Holy shit. This game skyrocketed to the top of my "favorite games this year" list. I daresay I enjoy it more than Bayonetta.

Wouldn't go that far.
Bayo had some pretty awesome moments to it too and the combat is the best I've played in an action game to date.
I don't know, beyond the cutscenes in the first level which were pretty great, so far each one has just been spitting boring exposition at me. Maybe they pick up later on.

It's a matter of excess.
Riding a missile or throwing your sword and then shooting it to make it break the sound barrier and then running to catch it is hilarious, because it's so absurd and excessive. It's completely ridiculous, and it's trying to be funny by being ridiculous in that way.
The cursing in DMC makes these entities of epic cosmic power sound like petty street thugs, which is especially bad for Mundus (and he had a good VA, just horrible writing). Sometimes they try to make the cursing funny, but they end up just putting "go fuck yourself" where a good, clever one-liner is supposed to be. It's not making the person sound badass, or clever, or whatever they're trying to achieve, and it's just not conveying the right tone for the context. It's not excessive, it's petty.
If someone else had seen me playing the game, I would have been kind of embarrassed; that's how bad the dialogue seemed to me in parts.

Admittedly I haven't played DmC yet, but I'm willing to bet money that the cursing is an homage to The Divine Comedy. My understanding is that the Inferno chapters were written in a more vulgar style than Paradise/Purgatory.

I have heard such endless praise for the level design that I should see this for myself (and the combat system is fun enough for a play through IMO).
No, no, no, that was Nero. :P

Great game. I'm recommending the shit out of this game to all my friends.
Wouldn't go that far.

But I would say I'm quite fond of DmC overall.
I'm digging the gameplay, and visually the game looks great. The story is doing absolutely nothing for me though. Taking itself way too seriously.

Yeah, it takes itself serious but only as serious as it needs to.
So yeah, Dante isn't going to start rocking out for no reason, but the game isn't as humorless as its detractors like to make it out to be.
If DMC3 was camp in its humor I would say DmC is more tongue n' cheek.

Remember that scene with Kat's spray? I keep picturing old Dante doing a backflip and going "maaaaan, that's gross!" His reaction was perfect.

I laughed my ass off on that scene. It was so amazingly juvenile, that I couldn't help myself.

Yes
This is exactly what it's supposed to come across as
That's probably my favorite scene in the game
And this is a game with a ton of wonderful scenes
