I love it.
Welcome to the club, though I ignored Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption.
So yesterday I bought Nuclear Wasteland 2030and Gravitron360, here are some impressions.
Nuclear Wasteland 2030 is good for a quick laugh, the graphics are decent enough and the controls aren't bad, but it is quite limited in terms of the environment (only the one level) and the enemies, which have a couple of colour variations but all just run straight for you rather stupidly. I got to about level 31 on my second go, and all the weapon upgrades seem to have stopped, so I turned it off. Good for a quick blast, only 80 points, some of the weapons feel good to shoot when you earn them and it is great to see a 3D shooter with realistic ambition of scope like this on the service; hope to see bigger and better things one day.
fraggle rating: pretty damned cool for a little while.
Gravitron360 I only played quickly late last night and man, that game is awesome. I played through about 10 levels, and they quickly became quite interesting in terms of level design; each feeling distinct from the last, with huge revolving things and narrow sections with stompy closing doorways beginning to feature as focal points. I'm a total sucker for Geometry Wars style graphics and they look great here. Controls are tricky for me, but massively better than what you usually find in the Gravitar genre, and being able to use a shield and shoot means you feel pretty damned empowered compared to other games of this ilk. Also rescuing the scientists feels really satisfying as a game mechanic, as does racing from each level into orbit before the reactor(s) explode(s). Totally recommended to arcade fans.
I downloaded a bunch of trial games today and immediately bought the first one I played and didn't get around to checking out the others.
That one was Inertia, a neat 2d platformer that has you (an astronaut) jumping around turning gravity on/off to fly and spin through the levels, dodging fire and exposed electrical wiring.
I've only played 4 or 5 levels (not sure how many there are total) but I've been loving it. It seems to have a ridiculous amount of stick sensitivity issues though (or maybe my stick is just dirty or something) because walking to the right is fine, pretty normal speed, but as soon as I tap the stick even slightly to the left, he takes off like a bullet. Kind of annoying, espescially for a platformer (though, like I said, it might just be my stick).
Also downloaded trials for Solar, Physics Sandbox something-or-other, and several random RPGs that got decent ratings. Looking forward to checking them out.
I've been on sort of an xblig binge lately since I finished New Vegas. They're just so cheap! It's like the video game equivelant of a candy bar, or something. I love it.

Tempura of the Dead is out and it's currently at #6 on the Top Rated list. Rather fun action/platformer with 2 playable characters, purchaseable upgrades, and aunthentic retro graphics.
Stick Unleashed (1-4 player co-op/vs stickman game) is out.
It's got a built in level editor, which is pretty easy to use (just make shapes & add objects) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMavuCTkYIA
Other fun games I played recently on XBLIG - Defy Gravity (platformer), and Dirchie Kart (wacky kart game, similar to that one with the fat plumber in).. well worth a look! Despite the uprising being over, there's still some good games making it through.
We're working on EGV2, which is coming to XBLIG hopefully in a few months.. it's an adventure game, with platformy controls, but mainly adventure-type gameplay.

Heh yeah thanks for updating this thread. I've been a tad delinquent in updating the OP for a while mostly because I've been busy as heck, first finishing CSTW and trying to help with the Uprising stuff, then doing some community helping out, then got slammed at work. But anyway I'll try to update the OP sometime this week when I get a chance.
Wow I didn't know about this thread when I made the Aban Hawkins thread, I would have just posted it here but the search functionality seems to be disabled.
I have bought probably more Indie Games than most people in the world, for some reason they tickle my fancy and work as great cool downs from more frustrating retail games. I always loved shareware style games, but in the past 4 or 5 years the bar has been raised with games like Knytt or Cave Story.
Price expectation I think is a major problem with this service, there is no way some of these games should be sold for $1, they should be more like $3 or $5. The problem is professional XBLA games are discounted to $5, and gazillions of games are being released for phones for $1 (or even free). I think one thing that would totally change everything about XBLIG games is if they have achievements, but that hasn't happened yet so we can only cross our fingers that it will happen. In my personal opinion they should make it so only 240 pt and above games can have achievements.
Let me try to write up some quick reviews of games that I don't see reviewed very often...otherwise, if you haven't seen it you should also check out the threads on NeoGAF about XBLIG games:
I'm basically only going to talk about games that I would recommend, and explain who I think would like them.
Bonded Realities: This is another quirky RPG similar to CSTW but with a little more cartoony hand drawn graphics. I think for fans of Earthbound/Mother series or Cthulu this is a no brainer must buy. I read that he's about to release the first patch with updated box art, hopefully that will help increase sales because it seems to have dropped off pretty hard. http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Bonded-Realities/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258550791
Astroman: I've heard this compared to Metroid before, and the influence is without a doubt there, but the controls and platforming are a little bit closer to a Mario game. You get harmed and have to hope to get energy packs to heal yourself or you die and have to go back to the last checkpoint. Lots of exploring and shooting cute aliens. I haven't put much time into this one, but it's very well made and definite recommendation. http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Curse-of-the-Crescent-Isle/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258550711
Curse of the Crescent Isle: This is a floaty platforming game that is brutally hard. It is kind of like a maniacally designed Super Mario Bros 2 because you have to pick up stuff and carry it around to complete goals or open doors. This game is frustrating but hey, it's cheap and made with pure indie love. Recommended for SMB2 fans. http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Curse-of-the-Crescent-Isle/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258550711
Just played all the way through this! It's really great.. probably only last you about 20 minutes (I had one "lose" playthrough of around 10 minutes, and a "win" of around the same length).. would be nice to see this extended to a series.. Platformance: somethingsomething.. 80 points per dungeon level, essentially. very enjoyable, definitely would recommend.

I haven't bought it yet, because the AI seemed kind of easy and i don't play local multiplayer that often. If you have someone to play with locally, it's probably worth buying and seems very well made. The "fat nerd" character was kind of fun to play as LOL, he has a belly bounce attack and his projectice is a trading card LOL http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Battle-High-San-Bruno/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802585507b3
Final Rift
Also, "Final Rift" is a pretty competent space trading/Wing Commander style game. It seems to have the feel of the Mass Effect 1 space exploration parts (without the 3D graphics LOL), nice writing and lots of polish/hints/etc. My main problem was I was trying to travel to another planet and it was taking forever, I wasn't sure if one of the buttons would accelerate the ship or not, went to menu and selected the planet again and I think it started me over from the beginning...if someone gets this and figures it out let me know O_o
Not sure how I missed this thread but I am glad it's back - thanks for the shout outs doods.
I played Bird Assassin tonight and liked it. For some reason, the trailer is also on Spike.com, not sure if there's a connection there. If the game had stopped at simply bird mashing it would have been okay, but it polished things up nicely and offers a full experience with some cut scenes, upgrades, world map, etc.
miner dig deep is strangely addictive. also, don't be afraid to try the games in kanji. They're some of the better looking games although I usually don't know what I'm supposed to be doing
Yeah Miner Dig Deep is great, it's like a 2D Minecraft before Minecraft existed. I'm surprised the creator hasn't made sequels to it.
One problem with finding good games is that the Top Rated only goes so far (50 games?? I don't know the # displayed), to see more you have to dig into genres, or basically find them online and search for the name on xbox.com. There are some XBLIG focused websites... http://www.xblaratings.com seems to be the most up to date
So the games getting screwed are the ones that are barely off of the Top Rated list. One reason some of the Top Rated list games don't change is that once they have a certain # of ratings (let's say 10,000 or more) it's really hard for other games to overcome those unless those other games also get a huge # of ratings. So it's really important for people to go rate the games they like (and don't like), and yet the ability to rate games directly from Game Library was removed for some reason...so after d/l trial you have to specifically go back to Game Marketplace and rate it from there. It never really made sense to me why they allow people to rate games that have never even bought it in the first place, but it might actually make the problem worse for games to compete to get on the Top Rated list if they added that restriction.
Anyway, morale of the story: rate your indie games! It's very important! It's also important to tell people about the gems, or else they will inevitably and forever be overshadowed by things like Baby Maker Extreme and Try Not to Fart.
I just released Defy Gravity a few days ago. It has managed to push into the top rated section and is hovering around 30-40 right now. Its like #4 or #5 top rated among platformers. You can check it out here if you want.

Defy Gravity is a core action platformer that is a mix between Super Mario style platforming, Braid and Portal 2d. Kara, our heroine, has access to a unique gameplay mechanic that she uses to manipulate the world around her. Kara has a gun that is able to alter the laws of physics through the creation of pockets of gravity and anti-gravity. By mastering the use of these abilities Kara is able to augment her jump in order to almost fly past obstacles. These powers can also be utilized to move objects that block her path and platforms that Kara stands on in order to traverse the levels.
Just wanted to mention that we'll be releasing our fourth XBLIG title "Trivia or Die" shortly. It is making its way through the Peer Review process right now.
Trivia or Die is at its heart a trivia game (500 questions long) but we've added some funny and insulting bits in there to in order to make it more unique and fun to play.

I bought this today. It's only 80 points and I figured it's worth getting just to show respect to someone managing to bring such a polished fighting game to XBLIG.
I agree about the AI, though the last two characters did start actually trying to kick my arse and I haven't tried it on a harder difficulty yet - so it might be alright.
Got a few local friends who like fighting games, plus a couple of arcade sticks, so sure to be worth the purchase next time we have a fight night. Very impressed with this game.
Yeah, I've bought many games as almost an "act" (even though I probably won't play them further) just because I know it goes directly into that developer's pocket
Yeah, I've bought many games as almost an "act" (even though I probably won't play them further) just because I know it goes directly into that developer's pocket
I like you.
I know what you mean though - even if I only get 20-30 minutes of solid entertainment, that's worth it for me.
For any game devs reading, apparently you can e-mail Joystiq and they will work with you to put up an article about your game. It might be more effective than posting here..I would try Kotaku too, but at least one upcoming XBLIG game was featured and it looks pretty good: Sequence, a music/rhythm..RPG??
It seems kind of like the Puzzle Quest twist but with rhythm movements.
I check the Top Downloaded section almost every day and it's kind of weird to see games suddenly burst into the list, like they are being discussed somewhere on the internet but I have no idea where. The latest one to do that is Voice Changer 360, which has some sort of Black Eyed Peas looking cover but it must work with the Kinect mic so maybe that's the reason for the popularity. I really don't like seeing apps mixed with games there, but beyond complaining I guess it will take a lot to make the sorting change. My impression is still that the Top Downloaded and Top Purchased are probably completely different (if I recall I think you can only see the top purchased from the website "Best selling")
Right now, Top Downloaded on the dash represents ranking based on actual sales, and the website xbox.com list represents ranking based on total downloads. Which is the opposite of how it used to be, but it was switched after the new dash layout came out. I like it better this way because it gives more dash exposure to games that people try, like, and buy rather than games that people just try just to see what the heck it is.
Wow that makes ... er... some sense I guess but makes me very, very sad at the same time O_o I literally thought there's no way that some of those games are selling
I think they should rename that to Best Selling and add a another one which is the real Top Downloaded for extra coverage
I think the dashboard would benefit from a Random section, which just throws random games at you to check out. There's so many games out there it might help the ones that get lost.

it's very strange - because the descriptions are totally the other way round.. on the website xbox.com it literally says "best selling today" and "best selling all time" as the sort options... dashboard just says "top downloads".

I know, it's counter-intuitive. But if you've seen sales posted in the sales thread it's the only way it makes sense.

I wept for society
I played Bird Assassin tonight and liked it. For some reason, the trailer is also on Spike.com, not sure if there's a connection there. If the game had stopped at simply bird mashing it would have been okay, but it polished things up nicely and offers a full experience with some cut scenes, upgrades, world map, etc.

Ophidian Wars: Opac's Journey

I like you.
I know what you mean though - even if I only get 20-30 minutes of solid entertainment, that's worth it for me.

I think they should rename that to Best Selling and add a another one which is the real Top Downloaded for extra coverage

it's very strange - because the descriptions are totally the other way round.. on the website xbox.com it literally says "best selling today" and "best selling all time" as the sort options... dashboard just says "top downloads".
Also - I Excruciating Guitar Voyage.
I know, it's counter-intuitive. But if you've seen sales posted in the sales thread it's the only way it makes sense.

Thanks for the plug! This is my first game and it's all been a big learning process. The physics and the difficulty curve are pretty lacking, I'm glad you stuck with it though!
