I can't help but feel it's just going to fall into the same trap of having big home console style games and then I just end up going "I think I'd rather play these ON a home console"

So this was some excellent news to wake up to. Loving both my psp and ds.. I am way more excited for the NGP than I am the 3ds. I don't mind if it's a bit bulky, as it's not like I keep anything expensive like that in my pockets anyways. I'm hoping for a $300 or so price, because I would totally pay that. It's probably already been answered, but is the Uncharted game for it a port of the original uncharted or is it a new game?
I just saw that this is a thing that has been officially announced. I still don't understand why Sony insists on having the left stick in the secondary position.
Same length as the Nomad? Somehow, I never would have seen that coming; the Nomad was a destroyer of hands, on par with the Lynx. Nice one with the chart by the way
Multiple versions of the NGP will launch from late 2011, each with Wi-Fi capability. Only one, however, will also feature 3G.
"The first thing to clarify, which I'm not sure the presentation did a perfect job of doing today, is that all of the devices will have Wi-Fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G," House said.
"So the user gets a choice. Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that."
Sony is currently "working hard" on 3G partnerships. House confirmed there will be some cost to the user for 3G services.
"You'll hear more from us around that aspect of the strategy as we get closer to launch."
Wait, so going on that there's going to be at least three? Fragmenting the userbase right of the bat, fantastic.
Does it really matter if you can play the same games?
It just means you can fit the price to the features you want or don't need.
It's not like the android where it various phones get what updates.
Whilst I can understand there being a separate model with 3G and one without, anything further just confuses matters. I guess it's to be found out what the differences -actually- are between the individual devices, but if it's anything other than onboard storage it's going to confuse the wider consumer base needlessly.
This is it; ultimately Sony figured it all out that chopping down features doesn't work, no-one really wants the crippled device. Same with Microsoft, eventually, with the only differences now being the storage space and (I think) bundled accessories. Different sized storage and mobile data are the only things that should differ.
I'm betting there will be some cool uses of this in conjunction with the PS3. With MMO's like DCUO, for example, I can see people using the PSP3 as a touch screen, wireless keyboard. Or even a controller for the game itself, with a touch-screen keyboard on the screen.
Holy shit, now that I've said it that actually sounds awesome.
SCEE confirmed to us this morning that "NGP does not have a video output feature".
That's a huge missed opportunity in my view. I really like the idea of a portable system that I can also hook up to my TV and have a console experience with. And it has bluetooth, so it could have been compatible with PS3 controllers. Sigh. A missed opportunity.
The design is nice, with a few potential complications. Like all the previous PSPs, this one seems to cry out for a cover to protect it's screen. If they make a Go-style revision, would the reverse touch screen be on the bottom (behind the controls) or behind the screen? Behind the screen might over more intuitive control, but behind the other controls would allow you to control it without opening the whole thing up. Which could be cool. I guess this is just hypothetical. (For what it's worth, I'd prefer a clam-shell revision anyway.)
I'm pegging the price at around $300-400. $350 if I had to get more specific. Out of my price-range and the 3DS still looks more appealing anyway, but...
Good job, Sony. I think this will make for some good handheld competition in the next decade.
Watching the Uncharted Portable footage. So without a video output, I guess that means they don't want you hooking this up to your TV and playing games that way, eh?
Also, I want to know if they can do Uncharted right on the NGP. I'm wondering how it'll handle without the other 2 shoulder buttons and all that tilt/touchscreen riffraff, and not being developed by Naughty Dog. Those NGP carts must have a lot of space on them.

HDMI is on the way out, though, at least as a way ofg getting exzternal media onto your TV screen that isn't a Blu-Ray. The future is streaming, and I'd bet this thing can do that.

Was the conference basically just announcing basic features and showing off the graphics of some games without saying anything about how they will be different from the rest of games in the franchises they are from?
3G with a provider will add about 30-50 bucks a month to the price. And data limits depending on the provider.
We'll have multiple models this year too? Guess they beat Nintendo to the punch.
I highly doubt it will be 30-50 bucks a month. Gamers aren't going to subscribe to that.
Then again, this is Sony we're talking about.
If they're shopping for a provider that basically means verizon, or t-mobile. And that's the rough price for their data plans
I'm aware of that. That doesn't mean that Sony isn't able to negotiate something different. The iPad has two (not unlimited) data plans ranging from $15 to $25. And remember, Sony is hoping/expecting people to use 3G for Playstation Store purchases. It may very well be totally free for PS Store activity but cost some amount for other activity. That would be smartest - negotiating to pick up the bandwidth tab of anyone using it to purchase stuff from them, the same way Amazon does with their Kindle. Whispernet isn't free when you are sending documents to your own Kindle but IS free when you are downloading from the Kindle Store itself as well as web browsing (admittedly, this uses far less bandwidth that downloading from PSN does).
All I'm saying here is that $30+/month is not a given. And I would personally find that crazy on Sony's part.

They showed back and front touch controls for uncharted.
Really superficial back and front touch controls and something that can be done on traditional controls, but still!
Also, there's a back touch game which I can't remember the name of.

My phone already does everything I need on the move so I won't have to pay for a service and the 3G model should be cheaper too.
A very good thing.

They really do a great job of hating Nintendo, don't they?
Though we shouldn't forget these shenanigans.

Yeah, those were dumb.
But this seems to be between getting a 3G model or not.
Which I think is great because not everyone will want the 3G. Like me.
Other SKUs will probably be between storage. Hopefully.
One will be pink. One will be light purple. The other will be canary yellow and have 3G.
We'll have multiple models this year too? Guess they beat Nintendo to the punch.
The pink one is clearly the only one to get.

Well the PSP could stream PS3 games.
It's free worldwide on the kindle, but the data transfer is so low that I don't think it'd be viable on the NGP.
It is free to the user

They did a version of MH3 with a new PSP with 2 nubs just for this reason.
