A cool thought. So the PSP2 won't do glassesless 3D like the 3DS, Sony can at the very least fake it like that one DSi game, using the 2 camera's/gyro to track movement and add depth to games, giving a partial 3D feeling.

I haven't gotten the chance to see any of the footage, but it sounds like this will be 1) awesome, and 2) awesomely expensive. I'll probably wait a few years to whenever it floats down to a reasonable price and then scoop up a ton of games on the cheap. Hell, I just got a PS3 a month ago. :P
I am immensely surprised and curious to find out more about the 3G connectivity. I wouldn't be totally against paying a data fee, but it would have to be super-low -- or otherwise the multimedia and browsing functionality would have to be so awesome that I'd be fine not using a smartphone or other device.
Oh, I totally agree, that would be moronic. It's why you don't need a Gold account on Xbox to get demos. Question though, does anyone know if buying things from the Apple App store or iTunes while on 3G counts against the bandwidth limit? I'm not sure (Zune), but it could be the precedent right there.
Apple/AT&T doesn't make any distinctions, so app downloads would count against your data cap -- however, there is a hard ceiling of 20MB for downloading apps over 3G. Anything larger than that and you can only download it through Wi-Fi. Most iPhone games are noticeably smaller for this very reason.
You'll need to track head movement as well, right? That may work with the front cam, but if it's that easy, why hasn't something like the iPhone done something like that already? Don't get me wrong, that's be awesome, but can't help wondering if it's more complex than that...

Hm. The visuals look great. But I'm a little concerned that if this thing really is as close to the PS3 as Sony says it is, then most developers would rather port their games rather than make something unique. And the "it's a portable PS2!" strategy failed miserably for the PSP. Maybe we'll be surprised, but the way they've treated the Wii/Move/Kinect reminds me that publishers like to take the path of least resistance.
Anyway, based on the fact that 1) this could appeal to a dedicated base and 2) the most powerful machine has NEVER won a generation and graphics matter less to the general market (i.e., not us) than they ever have, here's my predictions based on price.
$250--solid second place behind the 3DS.
$300--struggles.
$350 and above--stillborn.
Interesting that they aren't calling it a PSP2. Looks like Sony's acknowledged all the negative mindshare the original PSP has developed.
Also, the fact that we're confirmed to have carts proves that the premature launch and subsequent horrible failure of the digital-only Go (not to mention Sony dropping the ball on digital content for the device) has delayed portable gaming devices from going digital for at least a generation, if not more.
You know the main selling point for the NGP is for me right now?
The fact that instead of concentrating on 3d, they went for a really nice looking screen. That uncharted video alone shows how crisp and clean the images on that screen are.
That is selling me pretty hard on this device. Even enough to the point that i would pay a premium for it. Where as the 3ds seems a little pricey considering the big hype game on it is a port of a over decade old n64 game.

All you did is linked a video of the DSi game I mentioned.
So people in my IRC room are bitching something fierce about how the PSP2 doesn't support UMDs, it is going to fail because of it, and they don't want to rebuy all their PSP games for it. They don't want to listen to the fact that, this is a whole new system, UMD is a failed format that Sony is moving away from, and you can still play your UMD games on your PSP. Nobody is shooting your damn PSP in the head and making you choose one or the other, Sony doesn't want to double the size of their new system by shoving a dying cancer ridden format onto it, and to be glad that they are offering PSP games on PSN for the PSP2. Oh and apparently arguing with me about it is like talking to a brick wall.
Anybody want to call them stupid and point out just how dumb they are with concise detail?
Didn't the "It's a portable PS2" strategy fail miserably for the PSP because 95% of the early ports had insanely high load times? With the change away from UMDs, this doesn't look like it'll be a problem with the NGP.
As for why the system isn't DD-only, I imagine it has more to do with technical restrictions than the PSP Go's failure. If PS3 ports are common and each one is 5-15GBs, you'd run out of internal storage really fast.
All you did is linked a video of the DSi game I mentioned.
I know, it was a joke. :P When the 3DS was announced, people posted that video over and over again across the web as "zomg this is what the 3D effect looks like." Just wanted to cover the PSP2 as well.

I know we've clashed on this many times in the past and I promise that I don't obsessively follow your posts in order to contradict you, but I'm 99.7 percent certain that the decision to go to carts is based PURELY on trying to give the market what it apparently wants, as well as not annoying retailers. The Go did neither of those.

It was probably more because "I'll just play it on my non-portable PS2." Why play portable GTA instead of just regular GTA? It isn't like you are going to be playing it in ten minute chunks or anything like Tetris. Nintendo usually knows how to make games that aren't similar to shit available on their home consoles or works well with portable consoles.
Agreed. Going purely direct download pisses off the brick and mortar shops to no end. Just see the backlash for Steam, didn't some place say that if Steam got Portal 2 on the same day as their places, they wouldn't stock it?

Do people actually play 10 minute chunks on anything other than a phone in their pocket? I never pull out a portable game system unless I've got at least 25-30 minutes free - doesn't feel worth it to take the time to pull it out, put on the headphones and put it away for shorter period of time.
Hey, this thing has a front facing camera. That means it can do the best kind of 3d, head tracking 3d! I love head tracking, I hope someone thinks to put it in a game

The industry has been masturbating about how the iPhone is the wave of the future for a while.
Even half an hour is short compared to how long many console games will assume you play them for. For example, MGS4.

I can understand both sides of the "portable console games" vs "portable games" debate, but am somewhere in the middle.
When I look at some of my favorite console games, it's apparent to me that I'd enjoy them less if they were on a handheld. I like seeing them on a nice big TV screen, and play them from a nice comfy chair. And it would piss me off to have the best moments (or the cutscenes) interrupted with real life distractions.
That said, I tend to play my favorite portable game like console games, if that makes any sense. With a new Phoenix Wright game, for example, I'll wait until I'm home at night, turn off the lights, and really dig into it. It's just a more fun way to play for me.

30 minute blocks ought to be plenty of time to play any well designed game if you have sleep functionality which I assume the NGP will have.
Now, Square Enix needs to pull their head out of their ass and make the following for the PSP2 US market:
FFX International PSP2 Edition
FFX-2 International+Last Mission PSP2 Edition
Kingdom Hearts Final Mix PSP2 Edition
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix PSP2 Edition
Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Brave Go Fuck Yourself America Edition PSP2 Gold Platinum Forever Edition Edition
And have you guys thought of this? Final Fantasy XIV! If you can have a solid 3G connection, you can easily port some real (sorry MH3 people) MMORPGs to a handheld.

Metal Gear Ac!d had the right idea about cutscenes.
And really, as cool as I think Peacewalker probably is, the intro movies are like over an hour. That is ludicrous.
I hate to say it, but especially with how powerful it might be, maybe they want to encourage homebrew. I know, I know, the PS3 thing. But from what little I read and form my own opinion, I feel the PSP sold well with how well it did as an emulator among other homebrew aspects.
The fine line is always piracy. But if they're going all powerful, with a high price point, who would early adop? The homebrew crowd
Man, I would love it if they found a way to endorse homebrew but somehow lock out piracy. Just imagine: "customize your system however you want."
Hell, they could go the extra mile and actually charge for those additions, kind of like apps, or at least put them through some sort of certification process.
We've been able to customize our computers for years, when will consoles let us do the same?
