Basically yeah, "piracy" is an excuse, the issue is cultural. Americans, by and large, simply don't take handheld devices of any stripe "seriously" as game machines. The perception is that handheld games just literally aren't as good as set-top box games. This is probably a residual effect of the original Game Boy era when, well, that concept was true, and games on handhelds simply couldn't be as advanced or as good as stuff on the Big Boxes.
And they're not totally wrong, either. VC2 and VC3 made nice gameplay advances over VC, but because they're stuck on the PSP they have small, repetitive maps, limited animation in cutscenes, limited voice acting, less-detailed models, etc. etc. etc.
The PS Store is alive in Japan again, so I picked up Valkyria Chronicles 2. Thankfully it's small enough to fit on the 1gb card my friend lent me with his PSP.
Now I have to decide whether to buy the PSP from him or not.
Left school for a while during my lunch break to sit in a random parking lot and play Valk 2 in the car. I got wood watching some of the opening cinematics. Literally.

Just get a new one. It'll be peanuts to your future lawyer self.

I think it would only cost me about 5000 yen, so it's not that expensive (could probably resell it for the same amount). Bu on the other hand, I want to get a Vita when it comes out (first day or bust) so it might not be the wisest investment.
By the way, if I'm playing from a memory stick and not a UMD, the install option is basically pointless, right?
I am so pissed off that we haven't heard boo about VCIII getting localized. There are whispers about Sega not supporting the PSP in North America any more, but no official source seems to have it.
I am this close to importing a game I'll have to play in Moonspeak - and that disgusts me.

Between that and Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinite, I think it's basically a foregone conclusion that they're done with the PSP.
Which I guess you can't really blame them when everyone else is doing the same thing. Square-Enix has been saying they're not even sure how they'll be releasing FF Type-0 over here because it's a PSP game, Capcom has been avoiding Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on PSP (and if we do get it I almost guarantee it'll just be the PS3 version)
So I'm lookin' to get the digital version of VC3 off the Japanese PSN.
This shit is fucking expensive. ¥5,600 = $69.4 US, which will actually cost me $88 to buy the cards off Play-Asia.
And that's assuming the JP PSN won't charge me tax on the purchase - which is my question to you good folks. Have any of you bought stuff off the Japanese PSN before? What sort of tax situation am I looking at? I'm not willing to muck with any region settings on my PS3 to completely escape paying tax, I just want to know what I should be prepared for.
Edit: Whoops, nevermind. I just snagged the JP version of LocoRoco: Midnight Carnival for PSP from their Welcome Back program, and it wants me to deactivate the main account on my PSP in order to activate LocoRoco.
Well that ain't happening - I'm not about to constantly re- and de-activate accounts to play various titles on my Go.
I'll just stick with the UMD version in the mail, I guess. For shame, PSP!

The things about the Japanese/US PSP account thing, is that if you transfer something from a PS3 to a PSP (and the account is different than the one currently inhabiting it) the system will automatically enable the account that most recently had a game or something transferred over. It's not clean or pretty, but it's not as much of a pain in the ass as you might think...especially if you some small, cheap or free item on the PS Store to use as a "dummy" transfer or something. Transfer the item, system switches. Transfer another item to switch back to US.
I believe Japanese consumption tax is already included in the prices.
If I can give you one last recommendation - should you decide get any VC3 DLC, you're going to have to deal with the acount switching anyway. So you might as well go digital anyway.
Also, you could try whiterabbitexpress.com which might be able to get you PSN cards slightly more cheaply. (I dunno how play-asia does it - do they just pass off codes?)
Also, as for the Moonspeak - at least you won't have to deal with the English voice acting. The US demo was fun but I wanted to slap casting. And the localization team.
So I got VC3 yesterday. It's very... story-driven. Rather pleased to have it, rather pleased to be playing new VC again.
Also - does anyone know how to get my signature image working with the new forums? It's kind of driving me nuts. Also... where's all our little jazz for italics and bold and color and images and links?
I'm not feeling very positive about this new forum thingie. I'm not sure having a search option was worth the tradeoff of our freedom. Our freedom of speech.
Hey, look at that - simple HTML code works for italics. I wonder if it works for images...
I'm really enjoying VC2. I can't wait until 3 becomes a SEGA The Best. It's also been great Japanese study.
Unfortunately I don't know how long I'll be able to pay it. I was hoping to get a used PSP 1000 from a friend. Told another friend I was going to try and buy it - said friend does NOT want a PSP, in his own words - but he went and made the PSP owning friend an offer more than mine.
So eventually the PSP I'm borrowing will have to be given back, and I'll be waiting until the Vita to play VC. What a jerk!
The last mission was actually disappointingly simple. Scout-Rush Aliasse to the camp that unlocks the left camp where Baldren's at. Deploy tank. Drive tank towards Baldren wondering how the final boss does less damage than fucking Dirk douchebag when they're, essentially, the same enemy at this point. Deploy Marina the super-sniper elite. Snipe Radiator. Shoot Baldren in the fucking face with a tank barrel. Grin.
Just been messing around with Post-game now. And by messing around with Post-Game, I mean grinding on August's "Deadly Assault" or whatever it is, to try and get Lavinia's and Jugin's Missions. I'm honestly not too sure how much more time I'm going to spend with it, though. The V2's and prospect of stronger versions of the bosses doesn't make it very appetizing to play or think about playing.
I don't see why Sega (And, hell, anyone who's 'afraid' of releasing PSP games at this point) don't just localize the games for PSN-Only releases. Less cost (don't have to make all the physical components, print UMDs, etc.) and the games will play on PSP -and- Vita both when the latter comes out.

I hope and pray that they do. Perhaps piracy is still a concern with PSN-only releases, but I'm quite displeased that I'll be able to have VC2 on my Vita but not 3.

That would be really nice if they did do a PSN version of VC3. Sadly I think I'll have to do what Chance did and import it just to have. Especially reading all the cool things it did after 2. As for not having games on my Vita, think that isn't a problem for me since I plan on keeping my PSP 1000 for a very long time.
Poor Helmut (don't know if that's spelled right) went down in battle today. Coulda grabbed him with another unit but tried out the 2 CP withdraw command instead. Keep in mind I'm playing the Japanese version, so I'm not always 100% sure what things do. Turned out to be a direct trip to the hospital. Found that a little odd. I like him though, so I just decided to S-Rank some January and February missions until he got out.
Also, OH DEAR GOD WHAT IS THIS MARCH MISSION!?
Finally beat the March story mission. What a pain!
Chance, I did a little Japanese-PSN-math just now, wondering how much not only the game would cost, but the DLC as well.
For comparison, the original game is currently 2600 yen on the PSN store, which includes (I believe) 6 DLC missions. 1 extra mission is free on the store. The 14 other missions are 100 yen each. I might be off - but only by 100 yen.
On the other hand, VC3 costs 5600 yen, the extra episodes cost a total of 5800 yen and the extra missions run 2000 yen total. So for the "whole" game you might pay upwards of 13400 yen - 170 bucks in today's economy.
I can't wait for it to go on sale.
Speaking of which, I wanna buy valkyria4.jp and blackmail SEGA into making VC4 for the Vita in exchange for the domain name.
So, is there a reason why I shouldn't grind for XP on

I mean, I know I don't haveto grind at all, but I just want to get all my classes to Level 50. For...some reason. Shocks are already there, Scouts are level 41, Lancers at 25, ATs at 30-something, and Engies....15. It's a pretty easy mission, and while I don't think Going up against buffed versions of bosses is a good idea, much less a sound grinding strategy, Dirk goes down like a bitch. With it being one map and only six enemies, I finish it in under 3 turns (considering the enemies are who they are) for, like, Just under 400K experience with minimal chance for loss. It looks pretty efficient to me! Anything better out there?
Wife woke up at 4 AM today to continue working on presumably my handmade birthday card. She had only gone to bed at one. I couldn't get back to sleep. It was mostly VC2 related.

Wait what!? Fuck that man.
I know what would probably help PSP sales as well: when was the last time you ever saw an advertisement for a PSP game that wasn't that annoying kid from a year or two ago? I think it was MGS:PW. No one really ever pushed too hard for the PSP when it was first being developed that I remember, so it kind of flopped over here. Doesn't matter that both the DS and PSP were filled with shovelware and few ges on release.
I will agree with the cultural aspect. I really don't have anywhere to play a handheld at, as if I don't use public transportation or anything. The put down at anytime aspect is really nice though.

Cool, another July birthday dude.
So I decided to pop VC2 back into my PSP since KH:BBS pissed me off to no end. Figure I might as well grind everybody to level 50, especially since I read Darth_Mog's spoiler. Thanks for that one.
Whoa, I thought everyone only went to 25. Looks like I've got a lot of work ahead of me. Only 20 hours in and level 10ish.
Although the maps are frequently recycled in VC2, I have to admit I'm impressed with how much content there is in this game. I'm constantly being dragged back to the PSP. I also bought up all the DLC last night.

I am very sad that VC3 won't make it over here, given that I love love love the gameplay and I loved VC1's story, but found the overly bubbly anime style of VC2 grating. I may have to import.

If you put a good turret on the tank you can maybe do it in one turn, definitely two.
I really, really hope VC3 becomes a SEGA THE BEST title at some point. It's insanely expensive right now, compared with VC2. Does anyone know if the DLC was discounted for VC2 at some point? 100 per downloadable mission isn't terrible, but the VC3 "full" edition will run upwards of 13000 yen. Even if the game becomes half price, the DLC will still push 100 bucks!
Wow, 5 bucks for all that DLC! I paid close to 20 considering the currency exchange. I'll live though - it's a good game and I didn't mind the price (until I heard someone out there was getting a better deal than me, heh). The game came with 6 for free anyway!

For someone who understands no Japanese at all, but has played all the Valkyria games, are the weapons/stats easy enough to understand based on earlier games? Basically, will I have an easy enough time playing it for the actual gameplay while having no idea what's going on story wise?

Yes. You might have some trouble navigating the shop menus but I think you'll be able to adjust pretty quickly.
"Blacker than a moonless night, hotter and more bitter than Hell itself...That is coffee." - Godot
The hardest part will probably be tank customization, but I haven't run into a single mission yet that made me feel like I needed the tank (unless the computer told me I did). Without knowing any Japanese, you might not get the finer points of all the side upgrades and special weapon drops, but basically you upgrade down in a straightish line and the game asks whether you want to equip everyone with the new digs. It's pretty straightforward, and while you might end up upgrading something wrong here or there, there's pictures for everything and symbols you should recognize from the first game.
VC3 is currently $16.23 off at Play-Asia as part of their summer sale. If you're interested in importing the game, now's the time.
Was looking at it to purchase at that price, but it shows $ 53.67 for me. So do I have to have a FB page to get this deal? If that's the case, then that sucks since I don't have one.
Okay thread. I bought the DLC for VC2 today because.....I dunno, I guess I like to pay as much as I can to Sega to earn every bit of my disappointment at the lack of their future games and be inconvenienced by downloading 22 missions individually. Or something.
Also because there are overpowered weapons and possibly easy rares(?) Someone point me in the direction of these weapons, please? I kinda want to do the 'most rewarding' ones first.

IIRC it actually is a bit faster if you install from the digital install. Probably due to the install component sitting compressed in the game image.

It's a testament to how great the game is that it can draw me in as much as it did.
