Sort of back on track and one tipping point for me. For those who do have the Japanese VC3, does it have some kanji in it? Since I haven't looked yet on the Internet I was just wondering. I am assuming that it does since the only games I remember not having kanji in them are usually aimed at little kids (aka Pokemon).
    Yes.

I don't think it makes the game any harder to navigate, but it's there.

There is a lot of kanji in VC2, so presumably a similar amount in VC3. A lot of the more difficult kanji are not hard to understand, just challenging to read. However, you can usually figure out, "Oh, this one means boss. That one is troops. Battle."

If you are familiar with kanji, however, this is way more of a blessing than a curse. I'm working my way through some 国語 (kokugo - Japanese for Japanese people) textbooks right now, and endless hiragana sentences are really, really difficult to understand without kanji to designate meaning and break up the parts of the sentences.

Pokemon had a kanji option for the first time in Black and White, by the way.

Honestly, after playing through VC1 and halfway through 2, and not being completely fluent in japanese, I wouldn't want to import 3. Virtually half the charm of the game is contained in just the voice clips, and all the battle ones aren't subtitled. I flipped to the japanese voices in VC1, and it wasn't really the same game anymore. All those voice clips just turn into glorified sound effects. Even if I could understand the story by following a text script, I'd still be missing most of the charm of the game, and I'd personally rather just go without.

Okay, I've just hit Mission 18 in VC1. I know I'm nearing the end of the game, so should I spend any time grinding skirmishes before the end to hit top level? All my units are lvl 15-16 at the moment, is that enough?

I honestly wish I could help you ruzkin, but I think I didn't have everybody maxed out when I beat the game so you probably will be safe. My tactic during that game was to grind as much as I could stomach, then try the next level. If I couldn't get around on it without blowing through a bunch of turns, I would go back and grind a bit on the units I needed to use in that round (lancer or shocktrooper depending on the mission's objectives).

Oh cool, I didn't know about the kanji in the Pokemon B&W. I just remember my cousin telling me that he was using Pokemon as a learning tool. Thanks for letting me know that there is kanji in VC2/3. I figured as much because like you said astronautcowboy, it makes it easier to see where to break up the sentence. Thanks for the info guys.

I forgot that the main reason I was hoping to have it translated was exactly what The Wolfman mentioned. The story is where it got me hooked so if I do get the import, I will be doing a lot of pausing and translating. Do they have subtitles during the cut scenes? I remember there were none in VC2.

VC2 also has subtitles in the cutscenes. They were turned on by default in the downloadable Japanese version.

Ruzkin, I think you'll be fine. I definitely wasn't maxed out for the last level, and in VC (in general) there is no need to grind out levels or gear. It's a war game, so how you use your team is more important than how strong they are. Level in VC only really determines how quickly you can obliterate a mission. But speed runs are for New Game+

Just bought VC3...on credit. Yeah, I'm badass. No, actually I'm just out of spend money. And this is how I can put it off until next month/next next month but own it now. Being a Japanese woman's husband is interesting. Now, how much of the 8000 yen worth of DLC will I buy?

No, wait, I still have 2 Blu-Rays to buy for those extra missions. Duh!

Oh thank you you two for that info! Damn, now you guys just made this game go from a "maybe" to a "crap, now I want it" level.

How much is the game in Japan? I'm looking at the import costs and wondering what sort of method I want to do.

It's 5600 yen from the PS Store. Much cheaper used on auction sites, but I'm buying a Vita so UMDs aren't a worthwhile investment for me.

WOO!!! YESSSS I finally got my art book yesterday. Everybody is correct by saying that this thing is worth it. I didn't get it at the same price as others, but at $30 I think it is a steal.

Thanks for the price info, think I'll check out YJ for prices. I would rather have it on UMD for now.

Just started playing VC3, and man is this game different from 2. It's a good thing too, I think. They seem to have learned a lot from the second installment and I'm looking forward to a pretty solid game. In addition, since it's not strictly the same game repackaged with different characters, I don't feel like I won't want to go back to VC2 occasionally and work on a 100% save.

As for the future of the series, I don't really care whether it moves to the Vita, stays on the PSP (for ONLY one more installment) or goes back to the PS3, but something I would really like to see is either a new war or another perspective on the Civil War. I think everything that can be said about the Second Europan War will have been said by games end, but we've never seen anything about Welkin and Isara's parents roles in the First Europan War. I'm sure there's a civil war story in there somewhere from the army proper as well.

My design archive arrived today! It really is very impressive, and reminded me how much I loved the first game, its aesthetic and characters. I was looking forward to VC3 despite getting tired of VC2, a shame it's not likely to make it across. I really hope we see another installment on a machine more capable of handling the fantastic visuals and large maps of VC1.

One annoying thing in VC3: sometimes potentials proc and block your view of the health bar while you're taking intercepting fire. It hasn't killed me yet, but it will.

Say what you want about the story of VC2/3, but I think the UI in VC2 was cleaner, if less interesting. It felt much more organized.

I have Valkyria Chronicles Design Archive here. In my hands. It is a real thing. I ordered this in September 2010, and by now I'd thought this day would never come.

Oh god, it's awesome. So detailed, such good quality, such good translation, so much Valkyria Chronicles fantasy WW2 goodness in all 400 pages. heaps of writing from Raita too about the game development, the evolution of the art assets, and the character designs, which is great being a fan of him and his mechanical designs, as well as being a member of a team making a game from one of his concepts. MOTHER FUCKER!

I just bought the game a week or two ago.

Sure, I would have to wait another 3 months, but seriously, fuck. I hope those new episodes come out as DLC. I have the PSN version, so returns/used sales are not an option.

    You're killin' me SEGA.

I'm confident, however, that SEGA will come through and release the new extras as DLC. I doubt they are remaking any part of the game and the extra episodes will probably just lan in the DLC section anyway. If not, I'm going to pay them an angry visit.

On the (very not professional-looking) site that announced the sale of such a game, they mention three new chapters, so it's not going to be entirely like the original BEST version; there's new content this time around. Therefore, the concern people have on other VC boards is whether the extra chapters will be made available separately, or if we are stuck upgrading (which would really screw people who have imported or purchased the PSN version, as we cannot longer trade in the old version). I don't really want to pay 4000 yen for three chapters that could cost be less than half of that as DLC. Hopefully SEGA makes an announcement soon, since everyone knows their little secret now anyway.

Also, this secret definitely wasn't as little as they made it seem.

Ah, right. I forgot about that little detail when I made my post.

This is starting to sound more like a Director's Cut of VC3. Can't say I really blame them for being pissed.

As long as it's a Director's Cut that can be patched into the game I already own. There are definitely people annoyed that it even exists, but those people are mostly just whiners (lots of people hoping the "small" news had been an HD re-release, a new PS3 VC or a Vita announcement and were prepared for disappointment no matter what). However, the group I feel has the better argument are those who just want the new content made available to current owners. I'm sure it will be; I'm not as crabby as I was this afternoon anymore. To be honest, I expected it to be released as a "BEST" sometime soon. With the Vita launching soon, it was either now or never.

Wow, good thing I didn't import the older version now.

So can I now hope that perhaps they were waiting to bring this over instead of two different versions? Yeah right... I am pretty sure now that SEGA is done with this series in the US. For your sake AC, I hope they have the new chapters as DLC.

I'm pretty convinced things will work out in early adopters' favor. If not, SEGA is going to catch a lot of flak for this move.

Also if not, I'll probably get suckered into buying it because I am a consumer whore, and also a VC whore.

To anyone with VC3 - was chapter 12 a huge cock block for you, or what? Basically I steamrolled nearly every chapter thus far, yet the jump to three stars means the enemy can now destroy my tank with minimal lancer shots and my whole home base is wiped out by turn two no matter what I put there. With the enemy going first I'm boned no matter what.

And yet I somehow cleared the free mission that had three stars...

Figure I should go and beat any DLC and free missions I didn't S-Rank, but since when is VC more about grinding levels than strategy??

There hasn't been much word about anything from SEGA at TGS. Considering they had 4 or 5 unannounced titles, it's a little strange. I didn't know companies saved announcements for public showing days.

I can see their point, though.
Releasing a niche PSP title overseas isn't going to be a great business move.
This is actually something to look forward to with Vita, as I'm assuming it'd be a lot cheaper to release downloadable games to all regions, making niche translations a slightly more sound prospect.

Finally got my copy of the Valkyria Chronicles artbook (and the Atelier series artbook; I picked up the Ar tonelico one earlier).

The thing is f'ing XBAWX HUUUUGE. It's not only filled to the brim with illistrations and what seems like every single good rough scetch, but contains notes explaining every single image, character, thing, design choice, etc in there. Hell man. This is how you do a artbook. They didn't charge enough for this on amazon compared to the other ones.
