Valkyria Chronicles 2 is still really good. The worst thing about it is not the story; it's the leveling system. They took what was so perfect in it's simplicity (leveling classes individually) and turned into a Monster Hunter-style grind for random materials and certificates. Valkyria Chronicles 3 didn't fix it either, although it was a step in the right direction (you still have to upgrade every character's classes individually, and there are something like eight or nine classes in the game).

If you think Valkyria Chronicles 3 is the savior of the series though, I have bad news for you; the overall story is pretty good, but the ending is mother-effing ridiculous. The cameo appearances from Avan, Cosette and Zeri are also really great (not to mention the Squad 7 missions, but I'm trying to sell you guys on 2 here).

The addition of character missions in VC2 was really cool too. It gave every squad member depth, and encouraged you to use everyone, which the original did not.

People who didn't enjoy Marion's last mission are just not people to me.

    You guys are pervs!

But yeah that was a pretty funny twist, and it was incredibly well-acted in Japanese.

Marion was neck-and-neck with Anisette for me, but the two fielded at once were a goddamn force. (You may append the winky emote here.)

In any case, I agree that the classmate missions and sidestories were a great addition. They varied in quality and often had ludicrous setups for battles, but I enjoyed plenty of them and they did a fine job of fleshing out the supporting cast. Flaws in the main plot notwithstanding, most of those goofballs actually grew on me by game's end.

The war they were fighting in that game actually made a lot of sense too, what with the big reveal about the royal family and all.

It almost makes it a bit upsetting to meet the antagonists from that game in VC3 and realize they aren't as evil as they seemed.

I found the story in the first game to be agonizingly bad at times. It's a shame they doubled down on the anime cliche nonsense in the second game by setting it in a school. No sale. I wish they skipped 2 and localized 3 instead.

Such a shame, since the original VC is one of my favorite PS3 games.

I think there were some plotholes in the history-lessons of the first game. While mucking about in ruins and stuff. I don't remember the specifics.

I need to take pictures, but VC1 is the reason I painted my Space Marine Predator tank the way I did.
(Dark blue base and tried to imitate the camo pattern on Eidlewiess)

I even gave it a commander (complete with finger to ear for radio) and designated it '7'.

This is probably heresy, but I honestly got more mileage out of Oscar than Marina. She's better on the numbers, at least for accuracy, but I swear his potentials triggered more often, especially Extra Shot. During one of the last missions, I had him buddy up with Karl to feed him sniper ammo and the two mopped up anything that wasn't armored or Ty the Immortal.

In a related note, fuck Ty the Immortal.

Eh, it's not that anime, just very Japanese melodrama. The aesthetics are still amazing.

Yeah, so I don't really care that I've been getting C's and D's on missions because I want to be careful and not rush. Call it that "Fire Emblem sense" kicking in. Good thing too, or the Eeidlweiss would've been blown up several times over while trying to help gain territory in tank-heavy areas. Good thing I always have Dallas tagging along with Alicia for the perks.

Because instead there's a pool scene. And it's mandatory.

Bah, Chapter 5's battle was more complicated than I had hoped thanks to Jaeger's interference. I didn't know I actually had to beat the snot out of him in order to cap the base. How the hell do they expect you to clear these large maps in a handful of turns for a good ranking? Still, MVP was Claudia thanks to her awesome engineering performance. Love that gal's enthusiasm.

Most specifically, give the order that makes potentials trigger every time, and use alicia, who keeps getting her movement refilled for free and her health restored to 100% whenever it dips below a certain %.

I never had to stoop to such cheatery. But otherwise, if you want to do it somewhat normally, some maps are going to force you to save scum and pull off some annoying shit. Long range pin point shots with lancers, for example.

I vaguely recall there being some extremely accurate lances later in the game. Or maybe it was a potential/order? Either way, it was strange having dead eye Lancers.

It's not that it's bad or anything, it just felt unnecessary. There were so many false ending leading up to it, and a lot of them would have made decent endings. They didn't need to escalate things to the point that they did.

That being said, it did make for a nice, "If only he had known..." in the epilogue.

My main gripes with 2 were the whole grinding for class promotions thing and the maps. Especially the maps.

I just felt like that whole epic battle feel that I had on every battle in the first game was lost because the maps were so small and repetitive.

Yep, these two really made me frustrated with the game. The class promotions just involved mindless constant grinding that wasn't fun at all. You're literally spamming through a few select missions dozens of times to get specific certs for characters. Putting it on the PSP made the sequel lose the textures that were so pretty in the first, the maps were tiny and sectioned off, only a half dozen or so people on the field at once... meh.

And then there's the tropes. And I don't mind the tropes so much in JRPGs, but good GOD they're in rare form in VC2. MC dumber than a bag of hammers? Check. Tomboy? Check. Gun Porn chick? Check. Wincest pair? Check. Trap? Check. Reserve Trap? Check. Loli Valkyrie in a chainmail bikini and a whip?? Sure, why the hell not! And the school setting just makes it worse... the mood whiplash in August sealed it for me. Have a pool party... now have DEATH!!

VC2 is Japanese TryHard in concentrated form, and your mileage REALLY depends on how much of it you can stomach.

Blah, Chapter 6's desert combat was just slow and unpleasant thanks to those damn snipers and tanks. Nowhere to crouch behind cover other than trenches, and even that didn't work well against snipers and anti-tank rounds (just ask Ramsey and Claudia). MVP was Vyse the Legend Killer for taking down the Ace sniper in one go with the unique MG I got in Chapter 5. Still no Aika, though, which irks me greatly.

I had a dream last night that I was showing my brother Valkyria Chronicles. Usually when I dream about games they mutate, but in my dream is pretty damn 1:1 with the reality.

I should have shown him the game while I still had a PS3, because it's the sort of game that would be his favorite forever.

Wow. Just finished chapter 11 in the first game.

They're really pushing the 'war is hell' angle, arn't they? The dissonance with the anime design is pretty jarring.

Sadly, the game is about as subtle as a shotgun fired at a gong. At least the first game is reasonably focused on one plot at a time.

On a related note, in my weaker moments I wish the beach scene had been a full-on bonus mission, with everyone forced to fight against Imperials who, because of reasons, are also wearing swimsuits. Hell, they brought the tank with them, that's a costume unlock just waiting to happen.

Chapter 7 lived up to its tricky reputation, but it wasn't too much of a trouble. Hector, Largo and the Eidleweiss kept focusing on the machine guns while Catherine provide ace sniper support and Edy and Salinas did most of the gruntwork against advancing troops. I managed to finish fast enough to get a B rank, and the cherry on top: Aika's now part of the squad! :o
