The New Comic Thread for Friday, September 17, 2010
I still don't know exactly what this Minecraft thing is
I'm getting the impression it's DF without the insane OCD detail levels or something???
At any rate I got a chuckle, I recognize the creeping horror of incoming addiction anywhere

it is kind of gratifying to see this comic, too, after their professed dismay about sandbox games
this is a game that gets sandbox play right
where it is less about exploring some simulation of a city where you can break any law you want, and more about the freedom to discover all sorts of emergent gameplay with a ridiculously wonderful set of tools at your disposal

I wish it were easier to keep monsters from spawning in my giant sprawling complex.
I came around a corner last night and a FUCKING SKELINGTON started shooting me with arrows and I don't know how he got in or where he came from or where they spawn or what's happening and I haven't turned it off of Peaceful since then.

Place torches everywhere. Monsters spawn wherever it is dark, which includes outside at night time, so put torches everywhere. I even try and put torches all over mountains and shit for at least as far as the eye can see from whatever base I have so monsters won't spawn nearby and wander in to my place. Put em inside caves and mines, your buildings, outside and on top of your buildings, everywhere.

its easy
just put down more torches
they only spawn in total darkness
find a patch of shadow where he's spawning and fill it with light
and stop playing on giant wussy baby mode

The fact that minecraft costs money and DF doesn't makes DF the winner here.
There, I said it.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

whatever you gotta tell yourself, man
but having played both, all I know is I adore Minecraft
All I know about Minecraft is that it's basically DF without the crazy random tantrums and Fun. All you do is run around by yourself crafting shit. Sounds pretty meh.

Yeah, when I first tried it, it was an interesting sandbox thing, but now that there's monsters and crafting, it's pretty sweet.
I was thinking about starting another world, where instead of bunkering in and building a bunch of shit, I just wander the map and see how far I can go, maybe building a rudimentary shelter at night, or maybe just fighting my way through.

It's like Dwarf Fortress, except I don't have to track down six other things to make it borderline comprehensible.

holy shit what is this "rental" business on youtube now
you can "rent" the film for two bucks?
Also judging by the numbers he was already making bank, like 700,000 in a few weeks bank
I guess he probably has costs like servers or employees or whatever but still
bank

Minecraft becomes a richer experience when it delves into Survival Horror

I DON'T HAVE THAT.
I remember at the Q&A panel someone mentioned Minecraft in a thing about indie games and the game got a huge round of applause.
