How come the ESRB rates videogames in America, when that should be a governmenal organization taking care of determining was is fit for the people?

In Aus. we have the government give things ratings, not an private organization :S. I think your government should be regulating the video game rating system to be honest.

And it's working out real well for Australia, isn't it, what with Mature rated games being banned altogether because Australia doesn't have a rating for them.

Yeah, and maybe they can also regulate which movies are approved and which books are appropriate and all the other forms of free speech. Too much slips past these ratings boards!

    :^:

To Hadoken: It's really not the government's place to be regulating it, and the ESRB and retailers seem to get the job done well enough as it stands right now.

That right there would have a lot of people up in arms. A good chunk of people here don't tend to like the government determining things for the people like that.

Anyway, unless I'm mistaken the government doesn't regulate any ratings system (music and movies are also self regulated as far as I know).

    Who needs blu ray?
Do you feel that the DVD format is holding the Xbox 360 back in terms of its lifespan? A lot of people are saying that embracing Blu-ray would extend the 360's shelf life.

Stephen McGill: I think people may have spoken about that originally, but that's long gone. I think people now recognise what a smart decision it was to keep the pricing low, and actually Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format. People have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay. So, who needs Blu-ray?

Admittedly we've pretty much proven that this gen's games don't necessarily need Blu-ray many times over by now, but man that's a goosey statement.

And as far as Nintendo passing over CDs for a long time--remember, a large part of that was Yamauchi being bitter about the SNES CD add-on deal going sour. And before you say "no head of a multinational company would hamstring sales by doing something so petty!" remember that this is the man that actively told third-party developers to go fuck themselves.
Activision brand manager Jonathan Edney said: “Such is the quality of the game and the campaign we’re pulling together to support it, that we fully expect it to beat last year’s numbers and help retain Hero’s position as the most valuable music gaming franchise in the world.”

Activision is keeping its marketing plans secret, but Edney promises a “heavyweight spend that is able to engage consumers at a deep level”.

Um... it comes out in two days, guys. You're kinda missing the window of opportunity here.

He is right about DVD bein the right choice for the 360. No way it would have had the same sales with those costs added in; especially since it came out a year before the PS3 whe bluray costs would have been even more.

Looking back, cartridges might not have been the best business move, but if they had used CDs for the N64, there would have been a lot more shitty games on the platform, they would have had much longer load times, and relied on pre-rendered cut scenes like so many PS1 games did.

N64 games are much more playable than most PS1 games these days, and it's not just because it was a more powerful console.

Right, I think he may be underplaying bluray a bit much, but DVD was definately the right choice for 360, especially given initial costs of bluray (how'd that $500 PS3 work out for you Sony?).

The only actual advantage bluray brings to gaming is storage in any case. It brings that at the expense of disk read speed (aka longer loading times), so yeah... Although they are starting to become more common, we still aren't seeing a ton of multi-disk games on 360 (and most of those that are multi-disk are RPGs). So ultimately I don't think we are there yet.

Of course, in the future when texture resolutions go up and voice acting and cutscenes get more prevalent, it might be worth moving to bluray. Despite what he's claiming in that article though, I don't think many people are keen on "digital downloading" 50+ gigabyte games and the like :P

But we are in no way ready for a console that doesn't use some type of physical media. Broadband penetration isn't, well, broad enough. ISP's are doing everything they can to enforce bandwidth caps. We have at least one more generation of consoles ahead of us that absolutely have to have some sort of physical media, and it would be foolhardy and stupid for that media to be a regular old DVD for the Xbox 720. So it's either Blu-ray or some other proprietary software, and considering that it will probably be Blu-ray (given market familiarity and penetration) it seems really goosey to denounce the format entirely (even if Sony is the big console rival to MS).

Pretty much. Though the reason the PS3's read times are so slower is because the hardware was introduced at the very, VERY start of Blu-ray's life, and read speeds weren't great yet. They've gotten much better, but for whatever reason newer models of the PS3 can't or won't improve on them.

Not to mention that blu ray discs cost more than DVDs. That eats up a bit of margin.

That may just be because the format isn't super-common right now though. I imagine DVDs are as cheap as they are because they're everywhere, and thus, they are manufactured everywhere (along with like 10 years of potential manufacturing improvements to lower costs further). Given enough time I'm sure the same will happen with bluray (granted, they'll probably still charge way too much for them because, you know, $$$$$$)

Last I heard it cost 50 cents to press a DVD and a buck to press a Blu-ray disk.

As a small company we don’t have a huge marketing budget and this why we could not miss a chance to generate some buzz around an event as big as launching a brand new version of our website and even more important, bringing back Baldur’s Gate to life!

We believe this title was extremely expected by all our users and PC gamers in general. It would have made no sense to announce it in a typical plain corporate way. Our aim at GOG is to promote the greatest DRM-free PC classics ever in a creative way and allow people to escape from the usual boring mainstream marketing. We are also gamers and this is why we played a bit with this announcement.

Once again, we apologize for any harm we might have caused and we do hope people will keep the essence of our message in mind: GOG is doing things differently than elsewhere and yes, Baldur’s Gate is finally back (with more great releases to come)! We are working hard to provide users with much fun, so do expect some great surprises until Christmas.”

Remember when we first found out about Octomom, and the entire nation was all sympathetic and loving toward her miracle of eight babies, and then after a few days we found out she already had six kids and used fertility drugs for more and was in general a horrible human being, causing everyone to swiftly hate her?

    That springs to mind.

    Also she was batshit crazy.

The nation is stupid; most of these famous births involve fertility pills.

Gamers will stop caring about this if they love the service. Just like people don't seem to care anymore that EA destroyed so many developers. Just like people will forgive Activision if 5 years if they start pushing new IPs.

True. But that being said, hating is fun while people give you so much to hate.

And wait...people were actually impressed by that Octomom lady? I just thought she was a chick who popped out way too many kids.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/09/22/gog-com-apologise-for-hoax-closure/
“First of all we’d like to apologize to everyone who felt deceived or harmed in any way by the closedown of GOG.com.

Congratulation Sony. You no longer have the worst advertisement. Also, they are supposedly dress like monks at the conference.

Saw this coming a mile away...

I don't blame them. They just called upon the power of nerd rage.

Do they have Savage 2? I'll buy that and another copy of Sacrifice just to celebrate.
This is the end. The end of high prices!

Don't know about Savage 2, but they have Giants: Citizen Kabuto which means I am not allowed to hate them :P (even though I don't need to buy it as I own the CD :P)
