I hate to beat a dead horse on this(cause heaven knows I'm biased), but the SMT games always do different things with demon summoning. Why can't a huge company like Nintendo innovate while a small company like Atlus can on a regular basis?
Because Atlus doesn't stand to screw over a major cash cow by changing it up, especially considering the franchise isn't concentrated around one specific sub-series like with Pokemon.

I hate to be pedantic, but for a start it's actually Game Freak, not Nintendo that make the games.
Eh. They have rehashed it about as much as most other huge franchises. Black/White is the fifth generation. The main difference being that Nintendo milks them slowly rather than at an extreme rate like most companies. Also, the monster collecting genre isn't that big so it is harder for them to steal/borrow shit.
This.
Pokemon, like Dragon Quest, sells thanks to familiarity. Fans of those games want improvements on the formula, not a different experience.
That said, I can't see how someone can play pokemon games from different generations and not consider them sequels.
Any word yet on whether the fifth generation makes the fourth generation feel far less playable, like the fourth generation did with the third and the third generation did with the first and second?
Pokemon is a franchise that needs to shake things up
Move things and then shake them
In that precise order
(Actually the 3DS ones sound like a big enough departure for me to jump onboard, but I was wholly unimpressed by the changes from Red/Blue to Diamond/Pearl, and that's a pretty big gap of time)
Oh shit, the 3DS is already out in Japan?!
Cause you know, Pokemon Black/White's already out...
Any word yet on whether the fifth generation makes the fourth generation feel far less playable, like the fourth generation did with the third and the third generation did with the first and second?
I wanna know if they sped up the combat. I ended up selling Pearl because every round would take forever to end, specially when someone had a status ailment and a weather effect was on.

And the subtle changes they've made to the formula do result in drastic changes to the game overall. Hold items in Gen 2, Abilities in Gen 3 and the Physical/Special split in Gen 4 are prime examples of why these games are always fresh and interesting to me.
@Turkey: I'm on a complete blackout on the games now, but I'm pretty sure they've streamlined weather/status effects.

But that's crazy talk, they're all the same!
I keed.
Anyway, Gen 5 seems to have less pure gameplay changes than the previous few generations, no overhauling any systems this time around.
Off the top of my head, in-battle sprites are a bit more animated, seasons were added in which will probably only affect passive weather out on the routes, Triple Battles, and as of yet unconfirmed reports that the IV range was narrowed and TMs are reusable(Please to both of these). Also Dream World which I still have no idea about yet.

I can confirm that the TMs are reusable. Dream world isn't out yet. There's also a new "Pokemon Musical" mode that's just underwhelming, and seems to replace contests.
That said, the graphics are amazing and are finally full 3D, with sprites for characters.
I'm mainly waiting for them to speed up the battle system for pokemon and put more of the relevant info in readily available places rather than buried under dozens of menus or in faqs outside the game.
This of course is the one change that will never take place.
Would the games be better off if the system of forgetting moves to learn new ones was dropped, and each Pokemon had a list of known moves that you could freely assign to slots, and add to through levelling, TMs, or breeding?
That wouldn't necessarily affect competitive gameplay at all since builds are generally planned out in advance, but might be an enormous usability boost for everyone. The HM system might have to be tweaked, though.
They sped up the battle system slightly - and all the recent games allowed you to turn off battle animations as well.
That's kind of the opposite direction from where I feel it needs to go really. The animations are the one thing they need to keep. It's the needless screens of text you have to constantly button through they need to clean up. All the "It's super effective." blah blah, telling me the attack I just used was used and then how much it did and what kind of attack that was. Just pop up a little "Weakness" or "Super Effective" or "strong" thing above the enemies head and a number and move on!

There are mechanics that definately have to be altered, HMs being one of them.
Gen 3 had the right idea with a Key Item that allowed you to travel through the sandstorms in the desert, I don't get why they didn't make that the norm.

That qualifies as good news to me, even if I may not buy it myself, purely on the basis that judging by the sales numbers there are way too many people that haven't played it.
As much as I love all these HD remakes in theory, Ubisoft stands to flood the market at this rate.
Yeah and at this rate Ubisoft are going to go through their entire (quality) last gen library in a few months. After Rayman, Splinter Cell, BG&E and Prince of Persia, they're going to have what, their shitty Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six console ports?
As much as I love all these HD remakes in theory, Ubisoft stands to flood the market at this rate.
Yeah, but it's all games I might actually consider buying. If there's a market for it, and it's cost effective, why not? Especially since there is no BC on the PS3 for the previous gen.
I can see why HD remakes are attractive to Ubisoft, there's very little overhead and a loyal fanbase you can bet will buy it. But too many of them and you start to dilute the market, dropping sales of actual new games.
Maybe in Japan. In the US, the only really good RPGs were Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining the Holy Ark, both of which were late in the system's life.
Dragonforce, Mystaria, Shining Force III, Albert Odyssey, Shining Wisdom...
Those are the only other ones I can think of. Had em all. Was g8.
Ridge Racer rules
It still rules
I still have Ridge Racer 1 and it's still fun, despite being super-limited
The first Ridge Racer may be fun, to a degree, but the AI and driving physics simply did not exist in that game.
The terrible port of Daytona blew it out of the water. SEGA Rally Championship a year or so later was the best racing game until Gran Turismo came along.
Awesome BG&E news. Maybe I'll beat the game this time.
I didn't get a chance to play Beyond Good and Evil, so I will definitely pick up the HD remake.
Same here. A couple of years ago I started tracking down good GC games I had never played (as I was dirt poor when I first had my GC) and it was one of the only ones I was never able to find.

It's...decently priced on Amazon, if you can accept a used copy.

Nah, I have too much of a backlog at the moment anyway, I'll just wait for the XBLA version.

I am so buying Beyond Good and Evil again...for like the fifth time. :?
Also, Pokemon is awesome. I like some of the major changes they've done in the animation dept and such this time round, but I don't want them to overhaul the system really, as they'd probably just ruin what I like about the Pokemon games...I like that I can jump in and pretty much know how to play the games without watching any tutorials and such. Clean, simple fun.

I look fondly on the games I've bought multiple times: Timesplitters 2, Need for Speed Most Wanted and Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (had them on XBOX before adding them to my GC collection).
Good times.

I figure if I keep buying the different versions of the game, Ubisoft will finally get the hint, stop making Rabbids games and finally make BG&E2...right?

I've bought Bioshock twice. The original game stopped working for me because of the DRM or some shit. Consequently, that's also one of the last times I bought a PC version over a console version of anything. I now exclusively buy games on my 360 and not the PC. The exception are Valve based games, like Left4Dead 2. Because Valve are good doods and their games tend to god damn work after I've bought them.
I wonder how much the port of Animal Crossing will sell. I refuse to call it a new game at this point. Ports of that game have to stop selling eventually.

Hehe, I have a number of games that I've bought more than once....Beyond Good & Evil is a major example....I wasn't kidding, this will be like the fifth time I've bought it.
Other examples are Super Metroid, the original Metroid, Super Mario Bros 1 - 3, Rayman 2, plus several others. :P

It looks so much better visually, I figured they were working with a completely new system rather than actually, you know, trying.
