Wait, wait, waaaaaaait... because 4H lack mana points, I can't cast Cure between battles??? What did I miss!?
EDIT: And... in combat... I can't use a potion on someone else in the party... or use Cure on someone else in the party? This is confusing...
EDIT: Ok, found the Cure tome in the inventory and tried to use it... nothing happens... utterly confused now.
Heal spells are "smart". They heal the lowest HP member that isn't at full health. Potions are character-specific.
The Cure tome can only be used if the character has enough AP out of combat. AP carries over between battles. This is good info when you're about to face a boss. Knock out some baddies to fill up AP, and when you start the fight and everyone is psyched up, nail 'em hard!
Hmm... I'm just in the beginning of the game, but how do I get AP left over from combat?
Also... does "smart" include targeting? The main problem I have with DQ9 combat (and nearly ALL of JRPG combat) is... [fuck, I'm too tired to think of an example... but it's like this: You most powerful character gets to hit a monster last and thus wastes his powerful punch on a weakened monster, instead of hitting the strongest monster... I think it happens a lot after a monster "unexpectedly" dies when planning turn based battles... shit, not even that makes sense... I need sleep.]
A chest just turned into a Mimic... Ultima IV nostalgia overdose... all confusion regarding 4H is forgiven, I will fully embrace this new system.
PS. One final question before I turn in: I thought having full AP meant getting "strong fire", but it wasn't. It appears totally random to me, but what really controls it?
Enemy targeting isn't smart at all. It just goes left to right, front or rear. You basically have to plan around the fact. That's why the game recommends you split up your weapon types, have some party members with front attacks, and the rest with rear, to try and avoid it.
The "stronger attack" mechanic is what the whole "XXXX is psyched!" message means between rounds. Took me a few dungeons before I clued in on it. Probably a sign I should give the manual another glance. :P

DQ9 technically innovates with cel shading on the DS, and 4H has anti-aliasing. Both use a very special color palette to create atmosphere, but 4H takes it to the extreme (including the perspective).
I feel like 4 Warriors of Light's look is meant to bring to mind 8-bit looks without actually being 8-bit. The high contrast, simple coloring. The blocky character design, etc.
Confirmed: They fixed the healing AI. My black mage was at 57 HP (roughtly 80%), my Bandit was at 60 (Roughly 50%), and the whitemage healed the bandit.
Wait, they fixed it? Since your last post, the developers have patched the game to make the healing AI not suck?
Since the last post, I confirmed it apparently acts differently than the Japanese version.
Edit: Or, more likely, that the complaints about the Japanese version were vastly overblown.

I don't feel the 8-bit thing at all (apart from in gameplay). I think it's meant to look like a painting, and they pull it off better than any other game I've tried so far.

I think I remember reading somewhere about Legend of Mana that they were going for a watercolored storybook look in it. I really liked the backgrounds in that game, though the character design and the story were lacking I think.

Yeah, I'm in love with the art directions and aesthetics of 4HoL. The soft colors and lack of lines gives it a really whimsical, dreamlike aspect. It kind of feels like playing a fairy tale at times. I really like the way the music changes to match the situation, especially at night when it slows down.
Personally, I'm glad that Dissidia is on the PSP and not the DS, since it means I can play it on my TV
No kidding, it'd probably look really bad on the DS. It works fine for the chibi characters they use in the RPGs but it's not built for 3D brawlers like that.
So the people in the first town got petrified as a side effect of me breaking the contract with the witch I guess... then I go into the desert and gather some moon rocks to revive the people... only, the moon rocks turn out to be a small map... then we find a desert town and the sultan says he will help me if I defeat the sand devil that's harassing them... so I do... but then the sultan locks himself in his palace. Fine, we'll sneak into the palace at night again (which we did before... even though we didn't know why)... only... no. The main character suddenly says that he's not strong enough to defeat the monsters... what the hell? I just defeated the sand devil for that sultan... then a bloody white cat comes up to him... with a map... and he wants to give up on the sultan and run to another city? AND dump the girl who promised to help him at the same time? What the hell? How fucking strained is this story? And then I get to the other two heroes... and they can somehow use the hats that was given to my first hero, which is not just on another continent from their perspective, but also IN THE FUTURE! WTF!

4HoL: Who programmed the autotargeting to attack resistances while avoiding weaknesses? I'm not asking anything hard, like having the sense to hit the bastard with poison first, but having Aero hit the damn works while Earth Bracelet equipped characters hit the other fuckers instead of EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE would be the difference between a broken piece of shit and something I can work around.

Are you taking front versus back row into account?

Probably not. I think I can probably tell which monsters are in which row; any way to change which row I'm attacking, or is magic always back row first?
Magic/Spears/Long Range weapons always go for the back row first (if there is a back row) You can tell pretty easily with the rotating camera, most of the time I notice enemies in the front row become transparent when the back row is attacking.
Also with magic, maybe attacks too I forget. But with magic I know it says REAR or something on the ability button, I don't think any magic goes for front row first.

That definitely makes a lot of difference. Thanks.
Grr, I really need Emeralds. It's stupid that the second more common gem ist he thing holding me up from powering up all my gear, but, well, there you have it, really. I'm getting rubies from the Gobins, and topazes and above from the rest of the things.
One good thing is that by entering and exiting the forging screen, every so often I get a selection that doesn't request Emeralds, but, still.
I love the running gag about leaving the poor castle guard lady behind, it's kinda funny. She's been ditched so often at this point that when she does rejoin, she'll be like level 6, and the rest of my party is level 20ish now.
Seriously, nobody else find the story in Heroes of Light extremely fucking strange?
Also, the over simplified combat and inventory... I love the graphics and want to see the new locations, but the story, combat and inventory system has driven me back to DQ9. There's just too much that drives me nuts in this FF game.

I think it's great. Nothing about it has bothered me much so far. And I've had a hard time putting it down. Being able to target would be nice, but whatever.
Also anyone know at what point the party stabilizes out and people stop running off?
Because it looks like not a single person in PA is playing it, I just wanted to add a brief statement about Front Mission Evolved, which I'm reviewing.
So far: not as bad as people had thought.
But, also unnecessary. After all, it's not like there's any strategy-based robot games out this generation. They had a hook with their original gameplay concept, and decided to go third-person rock-em sock-em instead.
So I have resumed Final Fantasy XIII after putting it down 6 months ago. It's the only game I can play with a broken right wrist and I am actually really enjoying it. Just started the second disc. How long does the game take to complete (roughly)?

I figured as such, I'll probably pick it up when its dirt cheap.
So I take it this Krinjh guy is so much better than my normal dudes so I'll be really sad when he leaves?
Steal his sword and Aero book ASAP.
And his armor.
Steal the gear off every NPC that ever joins.
I dunno, for the most part, their weapons and armor aren't much better than what is readily purchasable. Their armor is unique looking, if you're crazy about collecting that sort of thing. I usually strip them of their magic if I don't already have it and leave the rest.
Then again, other than Kirinjh, everybody else lasts long enough after a boss fight to safely remove everything, so I guess it doesn't matter either way.

Okay I have recently seen someone honestly bitching that Tifa's boobs are too small in Dissidia Duodecim, and that nomura is ruining his own character design.

Wouldn't surprise me, there was similar bitching when her AC design first appeared. People honestly think the character is better off looking like this:
over this:
Frankly, I've been a bit concerned which makes up the majority of fans, because I'd hate to think Square was compelled to cater to the "sex sells" demograph. We still get stuff like this sometimes.
The ironic thing is her AC design actually made her hotter.
Incidentally, was there new pics or artwork of her in Dissidia? Or are they just referring to the TGS trailer?

And did
I / II have an FMV besides the intro on PS1 OR PSP?

also:
Are all the PS1 Chrono Trigger FMVs (anime) in the DS version?
Origin: Galedrid - Nintendo: Galedrid/3222-6858-1045
Blizzard: Galedrid#1367 - FFXIV: Galedrid Kingshand
Chrono Cross: beyond all the various in-game endings - there is or isn't one singular FMV ending?
original NGC Crystal Chronicles: all in-game cutscenes, right? No FMV?

Extremely positive so far, despite what I've posted above. Manages to feel unique in an interesting way.
