A. Kuja does ridiculous stuff with Trance
B. Zidane is basically his clone or something
C. Trance can do whatever you have the emotional resolve to do, given enough power
Now where were they? That's right, in the bowels of the Tree, right next to two worlds' worth of dead souls, the power that Kuja had used in the game already. I always assumed Zidane just Tranced to survive. He even says he "had to come back" or something in the ending, which are much like what Kuja says earlier in the game.
Am I the only one who remembers FFX-2's "good ending" being foreshadowed in FFX?
In FFX's endgame, after most of the plot is unfurled, I remember going around to talk to all of the Fayths in their chambers. They basically clarified the Yu Yevon/Sin/Final Summon clusterfuck, and wanted to be free of the endless cycle. One of them promised to Dream a new ocean for Tidus. I basically assumed that meant Tidus would be coming back to life.
Did this actually happen or am I confused?
Hmm on second thought I think I remember something like that.
As shameless as this whole scene is, I can't help but find it amusing, maybe because of how freaking absurd it was (for FF).
The FFX world as a whole is pretty much the most fanservice heavy out of any game. Bountiful cleavage aside, Lulu is considered modest compared to what most of the female (and male) population is wearing. Makes sense in context since it's a beach setting, but still....

Well, there was one clear connection...
If you pay attention after the credits, it shows an FMV with Tidus waking up in a pool of water, and swimming up to the surface, which could be taken for X-2's ending where he arrives at Besaid's beach before Yuna shows up.
I always thought that Zidane survive because Trance, and he took so long to return because, being a theater guy, he wanted it to be as flashy as possible. He plans for hooking back up with Garnet probably got grander and grander on the walk home, until he finally decided to go back to Tantalus and get them to put on a show for the occasion. He probably also had a few misgivings about how much his life was going to change, so I imagine that he spent some time thieving around again before his return. Any decent guy would have gotten word of his survival to everyone else at the first opportunity, but Zidane had to do it with STYLE.
I haven't played this in a few years so my memory is a bit foggy, but that's how I thought it went down.

I wish X hadn't handwaved so much stuff. I just have to assume that with so much stuff happening underwater for extended periods of time that breathing just works differently there. I'm not complaining, obviously a lot of other stuff works differently there too, including death, but I just wish they would've said something definitive.

Lol, when I first played the game and Blitzball came into play, I was like "...What... they're, they're underwater? But how do they...? Nevermind, lolmagic."

I thought they did kind of talk about it during that one water mission. Something about special training for blitzball players that is also used by the Al Bhed. Wasn't that why you could only use Tidus, Riku, and Wakka for that mission?
Then again, my mind may just be making up shit to reconcile the water breathing.
Also, X was bar none my favorite after VI.
Also, I was faaar to addicted to the blitzball mini-game. I would have played an entire spin off sports game built around it if given the opportunity.
As should we all. Fuck that game forever and back again.
I don't care what anyone says, no Final Fantasy has had a good "main" minigame. Triple Triad included (though I just don't like card games to begin with). I think the closest the series ever got was Chocobo Hot and Cold, which was still a total pain in the ass.

I spent far too much time playing chocobo hot and cold. The game design critic in me doesn't want to admit that there's anything special about it, but that doesn't make it any less addictive. The music probably had a lot to do with that.
Hunting down the treasures was legitimately brilliant though. If I'd had this game as a kid, I'm absolutely certain that playing this would have led to me hiding things in the backyard, drawing rough pictures of their locations, and trying to get my parents or friends to go find them.

I've gotten gotten some mileage out of most of FFs mini-games.
Triple Triad was pretty good.
So was Chocobo Hot n Cold
Sphere Break was pretty good too.
Chocobo racing/breeding and Blitzball are entertaining your first play through, but they get boring really quick.
As should we all. Fuck that game forever and back again.

Please do. I think I'm in line for a medal for defending the only good game in this franchise against all you lunatics.

Triple Triad was awesome, and served a clear purpose to your cause via Card Mod (or was it "Card Refinery"?)

I really wished I was have gotten over my collector tendencies in FF8.
I would collect all the cards and never use any of them.

I seem to remember just cheating at the X-2 card game thing (was that sphere break?) having a 1, 2, 3 and 6 meant you could make all the possible combinations and so long as one of them was an Iron Giant then you'd just rack up the multiplier thingy and win every time.
Please do. I think I'm in line for a medal for defending the only good game in this franchise against all you lunatics.
I'm sure it's come up multiple times already in this thread, but I'm really curious what the good points were and I don't remember when FF8 was last discussed, or even whether I've posted about it before.
My wife and I played through this a year or two ago since it was the only FF released in the U.S. that we hadn't seen yet, and it was pretty much the gaming equivalent of sitting through a bad horror film for the laughs. I don't think I would have finished it if I hadn't turned off random battles at the first opportunity. I admit we both had a great time ripping on it, capped with Angelo finishing off the final boss by riding through it's chest on a rainbow or something (made even better because that was the first and only time we saw that move), but I wouldn't call anything about it GOOD.
I'm not trying to insult your opinion or anything. There're plenty of games I love that would earn me funny looks if I said so; I'm just genuinely curious what you liked about it. The only bits I can think of that had potential were the Laguna sections, but even then we had stuff like him tickling the man with a damaged throat before shoving him off a cliff.
I won't comment on Triple Triad because I never played it. I had already played FF9's awful attempt at a card game and this one seemed like almost the same thing at first glance.

the most charitable thing you can say about it is that it tried a whole bunch of innovative systems for a JRPG, despite failing at implementing almost every one of them
the diehards will go on about subtle characterization and plotting and fun gameplay, but that is because they are crazy

Well you see, the thing about Final Fantasy VIII is...
the diehards will go on about subtle characterization and plotting and fun gameplay, but that is because they are crazy
...uh, that. Now it's true that I am certifiably insane, but my doctors have agreed that I show 100% lucidity when it comes to Final Fantasy appreciation (and the ability to point out palindromes at a moments notice, oddly).
But hey, how about everyone come forward to defend their favorite title in the series? That sounds fun!
Well, 6 is by far my favorite (not counting Tactics) so I don't think it needs much defending. However, I'd also claim that Kefka is my favorite villain, and that not having a true main character is awesome, both of which are probably a bit more controversial.
My first contribution? Drop the numbering scheme, it's already lost its impact (and will just get sillier as they move on to Final Fantasy 22). Add a fancy subtitle instead, ala Dragon Quest.
I suspect that primary reasons that people liked Triple Triad were that it was trivial and that it horrifically broke the rest of the game if done correctly. Neither of which make the minigame itself good.

We already have 'sidegames' with subtitles. If the numbering scheme is dropped, then that means that the idea of the main series itself is pretty much dead.
Which at this point might not be that bad of a thing. There'd be some rubble to clean up, though.

The thing is those side-games have sub-titles added to the main title: for example, "Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles" or "Final Fantasy Tactics".
Keep the "Final Fantasy" part separate, and THEN add a fancy subtitle that sounds less like a side-game and more like some epic book chapter, something that says "this is Final Fantasy. Not a spin-off or remake, but a reboot".
Next? The game should feature Bioware's Dialog Tree mechanic, but instead of imitating it directly, build upon it. Don't just have the main character spend 30 minutes having a standing conversation with a team member, create some sort of mini-game or scenario to pass the time.
For example, Party Member B asks Protagonist A if he wants to go fishing. The two of you head on a boat fishing while B starts to reminisce about his personal life, while A responds accordingly, building or hurting their relationship. Basically keep it like FFVII's affinity system, only expanded further.
Blitzball was pretty alright. I hated it because of the story game you had to play (read: Lose), but I went back to it later on and got into it. Not crazy into it, but enough to get Wakka's ultimate whatever (I think it was his weapon you got from BB) and play a few games after.
You can win the story game, just takes a bit of effort; I managed 3-1, with Wakka scoring two! On my last play of FFX I had a lot of fun struggling with the Besaid Aurochs (not using Tidus and silly imba Jecht Shot).
They eventually become the strongest team in the game by miles, plus with Auroch's Spirit I had a shoot stat of 99, meaning I could score/guaranteed sleep the keeper from my goalposts.
Loved Chocobo Hot n Cold, but it's true that most of the reason I like Triple Triad is because of its integration with breaking the game (that and I like collecting things).
Also yeah, I know you can win that first Blitzball game, but on your first run, without knowing much about the game, it's rather difficult. I know I got smoked 3-0 on it. I got them back, though. Oh yes, how I got them back.

XII's Hunts were pretty ok.
The only ones I really don't like are Jump Rope, the rest of X's, and that hatable, detestable monstrous abomination that is Tetra Master.
