All these music horror stories. Makes me feel like one of the lucky ones.

Actually, as angry as I am, I'm still kind of glad. Most of the music majors are totally fried in terms of both stress levels and music appreciation. It's getting to the point for a lot of them where they just don't like playing anymore.

Me, I have two majors that aren't music, but I'm in all three of the wind ensembles and the clarinet choir -- so I get the joy of playing music every single day, but none of the stress of lessons, juries, music theory, skills, etc.

The only thing is that, being in so many ensembles, I'm actually starting to get fried myself. :?

Okay, so I actually have a question about this:

As of right now, I'm probably going to UW-Madison for college. But but but, Lawrence University still hasn't returned my acceptance/rejectance, and they have an absolutely kick ass conservatory there. So my question is, if I get into Lawrence, should I go for the conservatory and be a music major, or should I go to Madison, pursue some other course of education, and do what you've done and be in all the ensembles on the side?

    Uh

That depends entirely on what you want to do, how much stress you can handle, etc etc.

I mean, I'll always be kind of disappointed that I don't get to do what I love for the rest of my life. I kind of had to give up on a dream and that sucks. But at the same time, I haven't gone on a murdering spree due to freaking out of a jury.

kk, thanks. I was just wondering whether you felt that a music major was something worth pursuing based on the fact that you hadn't gotten the opportunity to pursue one.

(I am kind of unsure what to do in college and am basically grasping at straws right now so that was the basis of that pretty random question :) )

The best way to not stress out in a music major is to not practice.

At least not more than is absolutely essential. Hell, you get better in an hour with your teacher than 5 hours everyday in the damn sound cubicles.

That is a thought, because if I wanted to get into the program I'd have to do the audition and maybe even just give up on whatever work I'd done toward a major thus far... but so far it's hypothetical because they delayed their decision on me until March! :(

Word, bro, I played Tuba Euph and Trombone all through highschool. Then I went on to play Euphonium in the Marine Corps Band for three years and I've been in and out of ska bands on trombone over the years. MIlitary bands are actually loads of fun and though you still have to go through bootcamp and everything its worth it. I travelled all over the country just showing up, playing a gig, getting drunk and heading home. Its pretty sweet, and all the musicians are pretty damned talented.
I encourage every Euph/baritone player I meet to memorize The Melody Shop as well. Greatest march ever written for that instrument.

Eh, it's more my own fault for having piss-poor grades and not working very hard in school. I was basically applying in hopes that my high ACT would carry me through, but it looks like they might want a couple more letters of recommendation.

That and the fact that I postmarked the application the last day of the "Early Application" window probably messed me up.
